Neurocognitive and Psychosocial Outcomes Among Pediatric Brain Tumor and Blood Cancer Patients

This will be the first in-depth study to evaluate pretreatment and 12 months post-treatment, neurocognitive and psychological outcomes of children with brain tumor and blood cancer in Pakistan. The investigators will also determine the socioeconomic burden of pediatric brain tumors in low middle-income region and the association of micro RNA and protein markers with neurocognitive outcomes in PBT and blood cancer children. A prospective cohort study with a follow-up of 12 months at the Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, Pakistan and Jinnah postgraduate Medical Centre , Karachi, Pakistan will be conducted. After taking consent/ assent the investigators will recruit 80, 5-21 years old children with newly diagnosed brain tumors presenting with any stage, who have not undergone any treatment. Trained psychologist will assess the neurocognitive outcomes by the Slosson scale, Raven's progressive matrices and Wechsler Intelligence Scale for children (WISC V) and Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS-IV) tools. The Quality of life and depression of the children will be determined by PedQL and Revised Children's Anxiety and Depression Scale (RCADS) and hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADs) respectively . The financial burden of the disease on the family will be measured on a visual analog scale ranging from no burden (0) to very large burden (100) and the parents QoL and disrupted schedule, financial problems, lack of family support, health problems and the impact of caregiving on caregiver's self-esteem will be assessed by Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory PedQl (family module) and Caregiver Reaction Assessment (CRA) tools respectively. The serum micro RNA (mi-21, mi-10b and mi-210) and protein markers (GFAP, NSE and S100β) will be assessed by qRT-PCR and ELISA.

Comparison of Open and Closed Chain Exercises in Athletes With Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome

Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is a common source of knee pain in the physically active population, predominantly in women. The incidence rate of PFPS among athletes is 25 percent, which is higher than that of general population. PFPS is caused by repetitive stress and aggravated in athletes by cycling and running. These symptoms are caused by structural or biomechanical changes of the joint, which becomes exacerbated by activities such as going up and down stairs, sit for a prolonged period, squatting or kneeling, resulting in increased compressive forces in the joint patellofemoral. It is characterized by defused pain in front of knee. Other signs also present are the patellar crepitus, swelling, and joint blockage despite being deemed a multifactorial condition with no single cure, PFPS is commonly attributed to muscular dysfunction, for which conservative rehabilitation is the treatment of choice. Historically, PFPS has been linked to impairments of the quadriceps muscle.

Interventions to Improve Non-communicable Disease Management During the Pandemic

This randomized controlled trial aims to implement and evaluate a comprehensive package of digital health interventions for integrated COVID-non-communicable diseases (NCDs) care to manage NCDs in primary care facilities in rural Pakistan. The main questions it aims to answer are 1) whether such interventions are effective; 2) how they were implemented; and 3) whether such interventions are cost-effective. 30 rural health centers in Punjab Province, Pakistan will be randomized into two groups. The intervention group will provide a comprehensive package of digital health interventions to connect patients, patient champions, and public health providers to improve the management of NCDs during the pandemic, including 1) providing training to health providers regarding an integrated NCD-COVID guideline; 2) using a smartphone app to improve NCD case management and linking with patient champions; and 3) employing telementoring platform to improve quality of care. Usual care will be provided in the control group. Researchers will compare the two groups to see if the systolic blood pressure can be controlled better in the intervention group at 10 months.

Role of Saffron and Chamomile in the Management of Parkinson's Disease

In multitudinous preclinical studies, Saffron and Chamomile are found effective in treating PD. They can mitigate the neurodegenerative progression of the disease by curtailing dopaminergic and neuronal loss and by inhibiting alpha-synuclein aggregation. They also possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. The synergism of both drugs can manage Parkinson's disease and related neurological disorders although, clinical trials are needed for further elaboration. Therefore, the purpose of the study is to evaluate the effects of Saffron and Chamomile and their active compounds in treating Parkinson's disease. This combination may change psychometric measures (MDS-Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale), biomarkers (including Alpha-synuclein), and oxidative stress-related to Parkinson's disease. This combination along with conventional therapy might be beneficial in managing patients with Parkinson's disease
