Laparoscopic Occlusion of Uterine Vessels Compared to Uterine Fibroid Embolization for Treatment of Uterine Fibroids

Women with symptomatic uterine fibroids are treated either by Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) or laparoscopic occlusion. The study hypothesis is that laparoscopic occlusion of uterine vessels and UFE have equal effect on bleeding symptoms. Menstrual bleeding reduction six months after treatment is the main endpoint. Secondary endpoints include participants assessment of symptom relief, and volume reduction of fibroids measured by MRI. We will also investigate possible differences in postoperative course, symptom reduction, complication, and recurrence. Patients are controlled with regular intervals up to five years after treatment.

The hypotheses are that the precision of the preoperative assessment may be increased, and our knowledge about the effect on the inner ear by middle ear surgery may be increased.

Ready to Use Therapeutic Food in the Rehabilitation of Severely Malnourished Children

Severe malnutrition is a major cause of child morbidity and mortality in developing countries especially sub-Saharan Africa. The hospital mortality rate due to severe malnutrition in developing countries ranges from 20-30%. For the rehabilitation of severely malnourished children, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends a liquid milk-based diet, Formula 100 (F100), which contains 100 kilocalories per 100 milliliters. In Uganda, the rehabilitation of severely malnourished children is based on High Energy Milk (HEM), which is reconstituted cows milk with a nutritional composition similar to F100. Recently a semi-solid ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF) with similar composition as F100 or HEM has been designed. This preparation can be eaten without adding water hence reducing the risk of bacterial contamination. The preparation can be used at home with minimal supervision. Hitherto the efficacy of RUTF in the rehabilitation of severely malnourished children in Uganda has not been studied. The purpose of this study is to determine whether giving daily RUTF in the rehabilitation of severely malnourished children will result in a higher weight gain than giving HEM.

The purpose of this study is to see if screening with flexible sigmoidoscopy (a flexible viewing tube) may reduce large bowel cancer and cancer deaths. The researchers also want to see if the addition of screening for occult blood in stools may contribute further to this aim. Additionally, the researchers also want to see to which extent (and in which direction) the study may influence overall endoscopic activity in the general population in the screening area and in areas where controlled screening is not established.

Surgery With or Without Combination Chemotherapy in Treating Patients With Liver Metastases From Colorectal Cancer

RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining more than one drug and combining chemotherapy with surgery may kill more tumor cells. It is not yet known if surgery is more effective with or without chemotherapy for liver metastases. PURPOSE: Randomized phase III trial to compare the effectiveness of surgery with or without combination chemotherapy in treating patients who have liver metastases from colorectal cancer.
