Observational Study of the Prevalence of CCSVI in Multiple Sclerosis and in Other Neurodegenerative Diseases

The presence of abnormalities in the cerebral venous circulation, defined as Chronic Cerebrospinal Venous Insufficiency (CCSVI), has recently been reported in patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), in healthy subjects and in subjects with other neurological diseases. These reports have aroused much interest both in the scientific world and, above all, among the communities of patients and Associations having the aim of aiding people with MS and of promoting scientific research into this disease. In the literature published so far there is a lack of verification in large samples of the prevalence of CCSVI in MS compared with that observed in healthy subjects and in those with other diseases of the nervous system. This is an observational study investigating the prevalence of CCSVI in subjects with MS and comparing it with the prevalence observed in a control population consisting of Healthy Controls (HC) and in a population affected by other neurological diseases of the central nervous system of degenerative, vascular, inflammatory and autoimmune origin. A total of at least 1,200 adults with MS will be included in the study, as well as 400 healthy subjects and 400 subjects with other neurodegenerative diseases.

The investigators have performed colposacropexy in women with uterovaginal prolapse for many years with satisfactory results. This study was designed to compare whether, in the treatment of patients with uro-genital prolapse and urinary incontinence, the addition of a contemporary anti-incontinence procedure such as mini-sling is associated with a reduction of post-operative urinary incontinence (correction of pre-existent urinary incontinence and prevention of masked urinary incontinence).

NCPAP + Heliox as a Treatment for Infant Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS)

Infants born between 28 and 32 weeks' gestation with radiological findings and clinical symptoms of moderate RDS, requiring respiratory support with Nasal Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (NCPAP) within the first hour of life, were randomized to receive either standard medical air or a Heliox/Oxygen mixture 80/20 (Heliox) during the first 12 hours of life, followed by medical air until NCPAP was needed. The aim of the study was to assess the therapeutic effects of breathing a low-density gas mixture (heliox: 80% helium and 20% oxygen) in premature babies with Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS), undergoing NCPAP in terms of reducing the rate of mechanical ventilation (MV).

Extracorporeal Photopheresis (ECP) With Methoxsalen for Chronic Graft Versus Host Disease (cGVHD)

Chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD) is a long-lasting complication that can occur after transplants. The transplanted cells seem to fight with the patient's own cells. Extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP) is a fairly new procedure for cGVHD. The participant gets a port to hook up to a machine. The machine removes the white blood cells, mixes them with a light-sensitive drug, shines light on it, and puts all the blood back in. This study will find out if patients respond better if they get ECP with methoxsalen, in addition to the pills normally used to treat cGVHD.
