Temporal Disorders in Left and Right Brain-Damaged Patients

Time is an important function that permeates our everyday activities but it has been so far significantly under-investigated in neurological patients. For instance, it is known that right brain damaged (RBD) patients with spatial attentional deficit (neglect) are impaired in both the ability to estimate the duration of an event (Time Estimation), showing a time underestimation, and the ability of mentally moving in past and future time (Mental Time Travelling), showing a deficit in processing future events when they are projected in the past. After a leftward shift of spatial attention induced by prismatic adaptation (PA), both the underestimation and the ability to travel in time ameliorate. However, less is known about these abilities in left brain damaged (LBD) patients. Aims of this study are to investigate: i) the performance (in terms of accuracy and reaction times) of LBD and RBD patients on Mental Time Travelling; ii) the correlation between Mental Time Travelling and Time Estimation abilities; iii) the efficacy of a single session of PA inducing a leftward (L-PA) and a rightward (R-PA) attentional shift on Mental Time Travelling and Time Estimation abilities. A group of control subjects will be involved for comparison among groups.

Implications of Covid-19 on the Lifestyle Changes

To limit the outbreaks of contagion, the Italian government imposed 2.months of complete lock-down, which imposed the social isolation for the whole population and, for those positive to the Covid-19, the complete confinement at home. Despite the recommendations for conserving healthy lifestyle of the Italian Government, during the lock-down the likelihood to fall into unhealthy behaviours might have increased. This study aims to describe the impact of Covid-19 on the lifestyles of a population of Italian adults living in an area of high spread of Sars-CoV-2.

In this study researchers want to learn more about changes in visual acuity (clarity of vision) with a high dose treatment with Aflibercept (Eylea) in patients suffering from neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD). Neovascular AMD is an eye disease that causes blurred vision or a blind spot due to abnormal blood vessels that leak fluid or blood into the light sensitive lining inside the eye (retina). The fluid buildup causes the central part of the retina (macula) responsible for sharp, straight-ahead vision to swell and thicken (edema), which distorts vision.

Risk Factors and Measures to Prevent Liver and Pancreas Complications in Pediatric Patients After HSCT

Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT) is currently a standard procedure for a wide range of blood-oncological diseases and genetic disorders. Recent improvements in transplant technologies, infection prevention and graft-versus-host-disease (GVHD) management procedures have significantly reduced the transplant-related mortality (TRM). However, approximately 50% of pediatric patients may develop liver dysfunction before HSCT and 74% to 85.5% after HSCT, with a TRM related to liver dysfunction reaching 46%. The liver and pancreas complications still remain too high for the difficulties and diagnostic inefficiencies and, consequently, for the lack of targeted and safer therapies. The diagnostic problems can be summarized in 3 major points: a) the histological examination of liver and pancreas parenchyma cannot be routinely performed because of the organ anatomy and the relative risk of the bioptic procedures; b) the lack of specific biomarkers or advanced imaging techniques appropriate for the diagnosis of HSCT complications; c) the multifactorial causes of organ complications, as well as drug toxicities, GVHD, siderosis, ductopenia (considered as an index of hepatic GVHD), the accumulation of potentially toxic substances favored by siderosis and ductopenia. In more than 50% of HSCT patients, siderosis and/or ductopenia may represent common pathological conditions. Furthermore, international guidelines issued by onco-hematology and transplantation scientific societies recommend a chelating treatment with deferasirox in all hematological and oncological patients undergoing an intense transfusion regimen. However, in the presence of siderosis and marked ductopenia, patients receiving deferasirox may experience both severe renal and hematological toxicities and lack of effectiveness of the chelating treatment. Therefore, the principal aim of the present retrospective study will be the evaluation of the transplant-related mortality (TRM) in patients requiring a chelation treatment according to the Italian guidelines in pediatric patients

Transitional Cerebrovascular Reactivity in Very Preterm Infants

The transitional period, defined as the first 72 hours after preterm birth, is often characterized by a significant hemodynamic instability and may also be associated with an impairment of cerebral autoregulation, with relevant clinical implications. The moving correlation coefficient between cerebral oxygenation and heart rate, also defined as TOHRx, has been previously proposed as a marker of cerebrovascular reactivity and provides an indirect estimation of cerebral autoregulation in preterm infants. This study aims to evaluate whether different antenatal, perinatal and postnatal factors may influence cerebrovascular reactivity in very preterm infants during the transitional period.
