Abstract Background: Vitamin D affects a wide variety of functions in the body including regulation of calcium, phosphorus, and bone metabolism. Israeli studies have documented a high prevalence of Vitamin D deficiency in Israeli infants in general, which was more severe in infants from Ultra-Orthodox Jewish families. Modest dress requirements in this population drastically reduce sun exposure, known to encourage production of Vitamin D. Countless research has analyzed preterm as well as term neonates born to mothers with vitamin D deficiency, with regard to weight, height, and bone mineral density at birth. However, there is a paucity of information about healthy infants' vitamin D levels and its' correlation to these parameters during the first few years of life. Objectives: The purpose of the proposed study is to measure and correlate levels of 25(OH)D and bone mineral density towards the end of the first year of life with growth rates and bone mineral density in the same children at the ages of 2, 3 and 5 years. Patients and Methods: The study will be performed in the Ultra-Orthodox Jewish community of Beitar Illit. 25(OH)D levels will be taken between 9-12 months of age (when routine blood tests are normally drawn for these infants) and bone mineral density will be measured using Quantitative Ultrasound. Infants will be divided into 2 groups: those with those with normal 25(OH)D levels (>15ng/ml), and those with 25(OH)D deficiency (<15ng/ml). Group 1- normal levels will receive no intervention. Infants with 25(OH)D below 15ng/ml will be randomly assigned into one of two groups; Group 2-those receiving continued vitamin D supplementation of 800 international units(IU) (4gtt/d) for one year, or Group 3- those receiving the placebo. Height, weight, and head circumference growth curves will be recorded every two months until 2 years of age. Quantitative ultrasound, growth charts and blood tests including 25(OH)D, serum calcium and phosphate levels, Parathyroid hormone (PTH), and alkaline phosphatase, taken at approximately 9-12 months will be repeated at 2 years of age. At that time children from Group 1 (no supplementation) will be divided into three: Group 1a- normal 25(OH)D levels will continue with no intervention, Group 1b <15ng/ml will begin receiving vitamin D 4gtt/d, Group 1c <15ng/ml will receive a placebo until age three. Groups 2 and 3 will continue their previous treatment until age three. All aforementioned tests will be repeated at age 3, when treatment will stop, and the same tests will be repeated at age 5.
This trial will facilitate access to denosumab for adults with advanced cancer who have participated in a denosumab phase 3 study until denosumab is approved and available for sale.

This randomized, multicenter, 2-arm, open-label study (TH3RESA) will evaluate the efficacy and safety of trastuzumab emtansine (T-DM1) in comparison with treatment of the physician's choice in patients with metastatic or unresectable locally advanced/recurrent HER2-positive breast cancer. Eligible patients will be randomized to receive either trastuzumab emtansine 3.6 mg/kg intravenously every 21 days or treatment of the physician's choice. Patients continue to receive study treatment until disease progression or unacceptable toxicity occurs. This study is also known under Roche study protocol number BO25734.
This study will expand the understanding of factors associated with adherence to self care and the diabetes control among diabetes type 2 patients. The theoretical framework of the study incorporates central variables from two theoretical models: a cognitive model of health behavior - "Health Belief Model", and the Stress and Coping model. The study is innovative in its focus on the association between the patient's attachment style and adherence to self care and diabetes control, a topic less studied among diabetes patients, in addition to cognitive, social and emotional variables. Further emphasis is upon a comparison of the study model between males and females.
Objective There is growing evidence showing a relation between depression, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, cardiovascular disease (1), serum lipid profile (2,3) and body weight (4), as well as the effects of some of the antidepressant medications on these various conditions and profiles. The aim of the study is to examine the influence of antidepressant medications on the metabolic profiles (5) of patients suffering from Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). Group of patients: 30 Patients aged 18-65, who were diagnosed with MDD according to the DSM-IV criteria. Research Design and Methods: Research duration will be 8 weeks. Patients meeting the inclusion criteria will be recruited after being diagnosed with MDD and having undertaken the HDRS. A follow-up HDRS will be taken at weeks 4 and 8. The psychiatric evaluation will be held by a resident in psychiatry. The following metabolic parameters will be examined at base-line and at the end of the 8 weeks: Weight, height, waist circumference, body mass index (BMI: (Weight in Kg/(Height in meters)2), sitting blood pressure (after 3 minutes of sitting). Serum lipid profile (performed in Ziv hospital's chemistry lab): Low density lipoprotein cholesterol, High density Lipoprotein cholesterol, Triglycerides, Total cholesterol, Apolipoprotein level (Apo AI, Apo B, Apo E, Apo AII). Fasting glucose and insulin blood levels, in order to evaluate insulin-release and resistance, according to the following formulas: Insulin Resistance: HOMA IR=Fasting glucose (mg/dL)x Fasting insulin (mmol/L)/405 Insulin Release: HOMA-β={360xfasting insulin (mmol/L)}/{glucose(mg/dL)-63} Serum oxidative stress parameters according to the F2-Isoprostane kit will be measured. Malonylaialdehyde (MDA) content in serum will be analyzed by the thiobarbituric acid reactive substances assay, which measures malondialdehyde equivalent (13). Conjugated dienes will be measured at 234nm (14, 15).
The purpose of this randomized controlled trial in patients undergoing cardiac surgery is to show that a 3rd generation HES (Hydroxyethyl Starch) solution - Tetraspan® is as good as in terms of safety and effectiveness as the commonly used albumin based solution for volume replacement after the surgery.
Vitamin D3 is produced in the skin following exposure to UVB light from the sun or artificial sources, and occurs naturally in a small range of foods.More recently, several reports underlined the impact of vitamin D on the prevalence and consequences of inadequate vitamin D intake and the research supporting its benefits for alleviating chronic musculoskeletal pain and fatigue syndromes in outpatients. Experts have recommended that vitamin D inadequacy should be addressed in all patients with bone or joint pain, myalgia, fibromyalgia, or chronic fatigue syndrome. It appears that soothing the daily musculoskeletal pain by supplementation of vitamin D may be a simple, well tolerated, and cost-effective modality. Aim of study: To study the potential therapeutic effects of vitamin D supplementation on patients with persistent musculo-skeletal pain. Clinicalparameters, visual analog score,short form McGill Pain Questionnaire,patient global perceived effect, quality of life assessed by SF-36 Questionnaire and laboratory parameters, the levels of 25 OH-Vitamin D, CRP, IL-6, IL-8, TNF and prostaglandin E will be assessed.
This is a Phase 3b, multicenter, international study conducted in 2 parts. Upon completion of the placebo-controlled period (Part 1), participants will have the option of enrolling in a 2-year open-label extension (Part 2). Part 1: The primary objective of the study is to investigate whether treatment with natalizumab slows the accumulation of disability not related to relapses in participants with secondary progressive multiple sclerosis (SPMS). The secondary objectives of Part 1 of this study are to determine the proportion of participants with consistent improvement in Timed 25-Foot Walk (T25FW), the change in participant-reported ambulatory status as measured by the 12-item MS Walking Scale (MSWS-12), the change in manual ability based on the ABILHAND Questionnaire, the impact of natalizumab on participant-reported quality of life using the Multiple Sclerosis Impact Scale-29 Physical (MSIS-29 Physical), the change in whole brain volume between the end of study and Week 24 using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and the proportion of participants experiencing progression of disability as measured by individual physical Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) system scores. Part 2: The primary objective of Part 2 of the study is to evaluate the safety profile of natalizumab in participants with SPMS. The secondary objectives of Part 2 of the study are to investigate long-term disability (based on clinical or patient-reported assessments) in participants with SPMS receiving natalizumab treatment for approximately 4 years and to assess change in brain volume and T2 lesion volume.
