Bone Age Assessment in Children Using Ultrasound Compared to Wrist X-ray

Bone age assessment in children is based on the interpretation of hand x-ray scans according to Greulich and Pyle (GP) standard atlas and frequently used for evaluating growth and puberty in children and adolescents. To address the disadvantage of repeated irradiation, the need for specialized radiation centers, heavy equipment and subjective reading a new device, SonicBone was developed. SonicBone utilizes a quantitative ultrasonographic technology of ultrasonic (US) waves, propagating along a measured bone distance. The aim of the study is to evaluate an ultrasound based device, SonicBone, compared to the current method in children. The investigators will be compared the US assessment to available bone age X-ray that exists in the medical files of the patients. The investigators will not do bone age X-ray scans especially for the current study.

The Association Between Nephrolithiasis and Periodontal Status

Dental calculus is a calcified deposits firmly attached to teeth and implants surfaces. Dental calculus is strongly associated with periodontitis and considered to have indirect role in the pathogenesis of periodontal diseases. Dental calculus composed primarily of calcium phosphate mineral salts originated in the saliva covered by unmineralized bacterial layer. Composition of calculus varies from person to person and influenced by numerous variables such as: age, gender systemic disease and ethnic background. Nephrolithiasis (kidney stones) are composed of insoluble salts of constituents of the forming urine. The most two frequent stone types are: Calcium oxalate (with a frequency of 15% -35%) and Calcium phosphate (5% -20%). The prevalence of kidney stones varies with race, sex, and geographic location. In the United States for men, kidney stone rates vary between 4%-9%, and for women, kidney stone rates range between 2%-4%. Previous studies dealt with the connection between sialolithiasis and nephrolithiasis were inconclusive. To the authors' best knowledge no studies were done to examine the associations between nephrolithiasis and dental calculus. Thus, the aim of this study is to compare the mineral composition of both dental calculus and nephrolithiasis and determine whether nephrolithiasis composition may be linked to the periodontal status.

Magnesium Deficiency In Patients Hospitalized in Internal Medicine Wards

Hypomagnesemia is a common entity in the inpatient and outpatient setting. in previous retrospective study hypomagnesemic patients have higher mortality and longer hospitalization. whether hypomagnesemia is merely a marker of poor prognosis, or whether replacing it can improve outcomes is unclear. The current standard of care is to discharge these patients without workup or further treatment, even if patients had received intravenous therapy while hospitalized. The investigator wish to examine prospectively whether giving replacement therapy affects mortality, length of hospital stay and overall well-being. In order to replete intracellular levels and replete magnesium stores, magnesium should be given for several months.

Salivary Free Cortisol Response to Cosyntropin Stimulation Test in Mitotane Treated Patients

In mitotane treated patients, serum cortisol cannot be used to diagnose hypoadrenalism, since mitotane increases cortisol binding globulin levels (CBG), artificially raising total cortisol. Salivary free cortisol (SC) is not affected by CBG alterations, and reflects the free serum cortisol. In the current study, investigators will assess serum and SC responses during low-dose cosyntropin stimulation test in healthy volunteers, mitotane-induced hypoadrenal patients on steroid replacement therapy and in patients who suffer from hypoadrenlism caused from other etiology. Investigators will compare results between groups and try to demonstrate the superiority of SC in assessing adrenal function in mitotane treated patients.
