This randomized study will evaluate the safety, tolerability and pharmacokinetics of single ascending subcutaneously administered doses of RO7062931 in healthy volunteers.
Cervical myelopathy (CM), a chronically compressive spinal cord lesion, is the most common cause of non-traumatic paraparesis/quadriparesis among the elderly. Hong Kong is facing a heavy social economic burden from CM with the rapidly aging population. Surgical decompression is considered as the mainstay of the treatment for CM patients to relieve their symptoms and signs. Yet the surgical outcome is not always satisfactory. There is a pressing need for understanding the exact mechanism of surgical decompression on the recovery of myelopathic cord in order to improve the prognosis of CM patients in near future.This project will evaluate neuronal activities and axon regeneration by longitudinally monitoring at time zero, 3 and 6 month after the surgery in CM patients using UTE, BOLD-fMRI and DTI, and to investigate the relationship of preoperative neuronal activities of myelopathic cord with axon regeneration.
People with psychosis demonstrated a tendency to use maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies as compared with healthy control groups. The present study is the first randomized controlled trial of group mindfulness-based intervention for psychosis. Half group will join the mindfulness-based cognitive intervention while another half will participate in psychoeducation to examine whether mindfulness will have a positive impact on emotion regulation and distress.
Social impairment is one of the core symptoms in first episode psychosis (FEP). Despite negative symptoms and social cognition impairment found in patient suffering from FEP, clinicians occasionally identified socially inappropriate behaviours (SIB) after onset and stabilization of psychotic disorder. It is also uncommon that some caregivers often complain about their relatives with psychosis of embarrassing and immature behaviour. SIB mainly observed in form of excessive emotional expression, childish behaviour and regressive behaviour. There is limited research focusing on this inadequate behavioural pattern in patient with first episode psychosis recently. It was worth investigating this phenomenon and gain more understanding in other comorbidity symptoms and caregiving distress arisen from this. Psychometric tests and validated assessment tools are well-developed for measuring positive symptoms, negative symptoms, neurocognitive deficits and social cognition impairment in schizophrenic patients but none of them is useful specifically for assessing SIB, and not to mention, from carer's perspective. It could be an obstacle for clinicians to investigate the phenomena of the prevalence and the impact on family in real life without any validated assessment tools or questionnaires. This qualitative study aims to identify the SIB in patients with FEP and to explore the caregiving experience and distress. Hopefully, this study may help designing a questionnaire for future exploration on this topic.
Postnatal depression is a common public health problem which has long-term sequelae on the family and the infant's psychosocial development. Interpersonal psychotherapy has demonstrated its value as one of the most effective interventions for postnatal depression. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of a couple-based interpersonal psychotherapy for first-time Chinese mothers and fathers on depressive symptoms, family sense of coherence, and marital relationships immediately after intervention and at 6 weeks and 6 months postpartum.
This study will evaluate the efficacy, safety, and pharmacokinetics of adjuvant atezolizumab in combination with paclitaxel, followed by atezolizumab, dose-dense doxorubicin or epirubicin (investigator's choice), and cyclophosphamide, compared with paclitaxel followed by dose-dense doxorubicin or epirubicin (investigator's choice) and cyclophosphamide alone in patients with Stage II-III TNBC (Triple Negative Breast Cancer)
Evidence suggests that repeated or chronic ketamine use, as compared to acute ketamine users, posed a higher clinical risk of developing psychotic disorders, potentially related to the underlying chronic N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) dysfunction, and a higher risk of suffering from schizophrenia particularly in those genetically susceptible, or genetically predisposed ketamine abusers. With ketamine infusion rises as a emerging hope as an acute treatment for depression and suicidality under the shadow of unknown longer term psychotomimetic effects peculiarly amongst repeated or chronic use, the current case-control study aims to investigate: a) if repeated or chronic ketamine use is associated with an increased risk of psychosis by comparing those ketamine abusers with and without psychosis, and to those non-ketamine-using drug abusers with psychosis; and b) if genetic predisposition from single nucleotide polymorphisms are associated with risk of psychosis in ketamine abusers.
With the recent availability of vortioxetine, and the surging phenomenon of cannabis misuses amongst young abusers, it is a timely opportunity to conduct an early pharmacotherapy intervention study to offer an evidence-based strategy aiming to stop individuals with cannabis use disorders with depressive or anxiety symptoms, to develop into a more chronic disabling dependence or co-morbid state.
Background: Diabetes-related distress (DRD) is very common among people with type II diabetes mellitus (DM). DRD led to poorer DM control and may led to adverse prognosis. Yet, there is no widely accepted or recommended DRD treatment. Mindfulness was shown to relieve psychological distress in various physical and mental conditions. Aim: as a pilot project, we aim to determine if mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT), which is one of the widely used mindfulness program, is feasible and acceptable and may improve DRD in our Chinese population. Method: 20 Chinese participants with suboptimally controlled DM and high DRD will be recruited to a 8- week MBCT group. Pre-group and post-group (immediate and 2-month post-group) data including DRD score, quality-of life measures will be compared.
Individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) have significant functional loss and poor quality of life. Individuals with cervical SCI are suffering much worse sickness within the SCI population. Tetraplegia resulting from cervical SCI bring a formidable emotional, physical, and financial burden in our society. Hand function is especially important to people with tetraplegia. Hand function is associated with independence in many activities, and impairments in upper extremity function can compound difficulties in many other areas, such as bowel and bladder management. Thus, it is not surprising that restoring hand function was found to be a priority for individuals with tetraplegia. Nowadays, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) plays an essential role in the diagnosis of SCI and helps to monitor disease progression and efficacy of therapies. Advanced MRI techniques, such as diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and functional MRI (fMRI), have shown the potential to improve the understanding of human spinal cord in healthy and pathological condition, and serve as imaging biomarkers to characterize damage degree, monitor the response to treatment, and predict the outcome of intervention. Meanwhile, multi-channel EMG (Electromyography) recordings can provide a mapping of neuromuscular activities from an electrode-array. The application of robotics in upper extremity function restoration of SCI patients has been started to help SCI patients to recovery upper extremity function. Combined DTI and fMRI to monitor the recovery of upper extremity function of SCI patients, this project will provide a tailored-made EMG driven soft-robotic hand prosthesis for tetraplegia individuals. We will provide the individuals with neuromuscular rehabilitation to preserve the residual function and to enhance the functional recovery. The eventual goal is to further design a useful robotic hand for regaining partial daily function to improve the quality of life for those individuals with tetraplegia.
