There are about 3753 clinical studies being (or have been) conducted in Hong Kong. The country of the clinical trial is determined by the location of where the clinical research is being studied. Most studies are often held in multiple locations & countries.
Recent animal research indicates that excitatory brain stimulation opens a time window of increased neural plasticity that permits remodeling of neural representations. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) may thus facilitate learning of new associations by reducing proactive interference but human research is missing. Therefore, it is the aim of this study to investigate the effects of intermittent theta-burst stimulation (iTBS), a potent form of excitatory brain stimulation, on associative memory. Twenty right handed healthy participants will receive 3 minutes of iTBS or sham stimulation of the left lateral parietal cortex after memorizing a set of 20 face-word associations. Recall capacity will be tested directly before and after stimulation. Participants will then learn a new combination of associations using the same set of stimuli, followed by an evaluation of their recall capacity. It is hypothesized that iTBS compared to sham stimulation will reduce recall capacity directly after the stimulation but increase recall capacity of the newly learned associations due to reduced proactive interference. This study may not only pave the way towards a new understanding of the mechanism of action of brain stimulation, but can also help in developing new treatment strategies for neuropsychiatric disorders.

The effects of exercise for older HIV-infected adults have not been well studied, especially in Chinese population. This study aimed to investigate the effect of supervised exercise on physical health and quality of life among older people living with HIV (PLWH) in Hong Kong. HIV-infected adults were recruited from a community-based Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) for HIV patient services. Participants were randomized into exercise group or control group. The participants in exercise group performed an 8-week moderate intensity supervised exercise program. In the control group, participants were not given any supervised exercises. They were advised to continue their routine daily activities and self exercises. Outcomes were measured for both groups at baseline and after 8 weeks. Primary outcomes: grip strength, 30 seconds chair stand, 6 minutes-walk test and Short Form-36 questionnaire (SF-36). Secondary outcome: Subjective improvement At the end of the program, all participants from exercise group were interviewed individually by principle investigator to allow feedbacks.
Building confidence and capabilities to transfer rehabilitative knowledge and skills into lifestyle-workable strategies for changing health behaviours among stroke survivors are important to optimise health outcomes and reduce risks of recurrent stroke. The aim of this project is to promote stroke survivors' health by building confidence and positive expectations of recovery outcomes, and enabling their engagement in stroke self-management behaviours.
A randomized controlled trial is proposed to compare the effectiveness of workshop-based and self-Help cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBTI), and sleep hygiene education (SHE) to treat insomnia in Hong Kong adolescent and adult patients, in terms of alleviation of insomnia severity, reduction in associated insomnia symptoms/ complications, and enhancement in quality of life. Insomnia is prevalent in Hong Kong and can cause severe impacts on patients and society, but there is a dearth of related research in the local population. Therefore, it is significant to conduct this study. A total of 210 participants aged > 18 with insomnia will be recruited and randomized into 3 groups to receive one of the 3 treatments. Outcomes will be measured using relevant questionnaires filled in at the baseline, 6 and 12 weeks afterwards. The results obtained will be compared within each group and among the 3 groups using statistical testing to determine the most effective treatment option for insomnia.
Stroke is a devastating illness that induces numerous impairments of body function and structure, and limitations to activities in all aspects of life, thus imposing multi-faceted restrictions on one's participation in daily living. It also has detrimental impacts on one's mental health, social relationship, and quality of life. Existing research focuses primarily on older adults stroke survivors; this study is set out to contribute to current knowledge of the effectiveness of arts-based rehabilitation on younger stroke survivors. Both psychological and physiological outcomes will be examined for a comprehensive understanding on the biological, psychological, social, and spiritual changes after participating in a non-pharmacological, engaging, safe and enjoyable multi-modal expressive arts-based intervention approach of rehabilitation.This current study will adopt a 2-arm randomized controlled design with treatment-as-usual control. Upon screening for inclusion exclusion criteria, baseline data will be collected; and eligible participants will be randomized into either an 8-week Expressive Arts-based intervention group or Treatment-As-Usual control group.
The Physiologic Pacing Registry is a prospective, observational, multi-center registry performed to gain a broader understanding of 1) physiologic pacing implant and follow-up workflows, including pacing and sensing measurements and 2) the clinical utility in creating a 3-dimensional electro-anatomical map of cardiac structures prior to physiologic pacing device implants based on the clinical site's routine care.
Background More than 60% of the daily smokers in Hong Kong have never tried and have no intention to quit smoking. About 30.8% of daily smokers attempted to quit but failed. Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) is a safe and effective pharmacotherapy to reduce withdrawal symptoms during early stage of tobacco abstinence and increase quit rate. However, the prevalence of using NRT in Hong Kong is lower than most of the developed countries. The proposed project aims to test if providing free NRT sampling to smokers can increase quit attempt, the use of smoking cessation (SC) services and abstinence. Methods University undergraduate students will be trained, and will invite smokers at outdoor smoking hotspots to quit smoking and enroll into SC services. Eligible smokers will be randomized to experimental or control group according to a cluster randomization, using recruitment session as the randomization unit. The experimental group will be provided with 1-week free NRT sampling and medication counselling, whereas the control group will be provided medication counselling. Both groups are advised to enroll in the SC services. The primary outcome is the proportion of smokers who report quit attempts at 1 month follow-up Discussions The findings will inform the feasibility and effectiveness of delivering free NRT sampling to increase quit attempt, the use of smoking cessation services and abstinence. It will yield more information on smokers' adherence to the NRT sampling, side effect and safety issue of the usage.
This study evaluates the treatment efficacy of tinnitus in people with mild hearing loss. One-third of participants will use hearing aid, one-third of participants will use customized music, while the other one-third participants will receive no treatment (waiting list control).
This three-part, Phase 1 protocol will be the first clinical study of ABI-H2158. Parts 1 and 2 will be a Phase 1a, dose-ranging assessment of ABI-H2158 in healthy adult volunteers. If the dose-related safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics (PK) of ABI-H2158 in healthy volunteers are deemed satisfactory, then the study will advance to Part 3, a Phase 1b, dose-ranging assessment of ABI-H2158 in non-cirrhotic, CHB patients.
