Montmorency Cherry Juice and Uric Acid Metabolism

Cherries have been show to possess the ability to reduce uric acid concentrations and inflammation. Tart Montmorency cherries possess a higher concentration of the plant compounds than other cherries and hence makes the expectation possible that Montmorency cherries will lower uric acid and inflammation.

Effect of B-GOS on GI Discomfort in Healthy Adults

The aim of the study is to evaluate the effects of a new food supplement which is currently available in the market, called Bimuno® (B-GOS), on gastrointestinal discomfort (e.g. bloating, abdominal pain/cramp and flatulence) in adults who often experience these symptoms but are otherwise healthy. About 400 volunteers will take part in this study, which will last 6 weeks (to include 4 weeks treatment and 2 weeks follow up period). Episodes of abdominal pain or discomfort (e.g. bloating, abdominal pain/cramp and flatulence), in the absence of diseases, are commonly associated with food or drug intake or with alterations of bowel habit and vary between individuals in frequency and severity. Some dietary ingredients are known to reduce these symptoms. We have used B-GOS previously in trials with healthy younger and older adults and we have observed a trend towards reducing abdominal bloating. However, the investigators have not tested B-GOS in healthy adults who often experience these symptoms and this is what we will investigate now.

Denosumab for Prolonging Bone Metastasis-Free Survival in Men With Hormone-Refractory Prostate Cancer

This is a multi-national, multi-center, open-label, single-arm extension study for the prolongation of bone metastasis-free survival in men with hormone-refractory (androgen independent) prostate cancer. Patients currently participating in the phase 3 study 20050147 (NCT00286091) will be offered this study if a positive benefit:risk compared with placebo is determined in the 20050147 study. The primary endpoint of the 20050147 study is bone metastases-free survival determined by the time to first occurrence of bone metastases (either symptomatic or asymptomatic) or death from any cause. Participants will receive open-label denosumab administered once every 4 weeks (Q4W) subcutaneously (SC) until they developed a bone metastasis or for up to 3 years, whichever comes first.

Hunter syndrome (Mucopolysaccharidosis II, [MPS II]) is a rare, genetically linked lysosomal storage disease (LSD) caused by deficiency of the enzyme, iduronate-2-sulfatase (I2S). Most MPS II patients will present with some degree of neurodevelopmental involvement, ranging from severe cognitive impairment and behavioral problems to mildly impaired cognition. This is an observational study; no investigational treatment will be administered. The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the neurodevelopmental status of pediatric patients with MPS II over time and to gain information to guide future treatment studies in this patient population.

Despite its use for decades all over the world, the exact mechanism of action of paracetamol is not fully understood and essentially involves a combination of hypotheses. It is known to have an effect via the central nervous system, and of the many mechanisms proposed, one hypothesis is that it may have indirectly activate CB1 (cannabinoid) receptors, through its novel metabolite AM404. This study aims to elucidate cerebrospinal levels of paracetamol and to measure the concentration of its metabolites, including AM404 in CSF. This may, in turn, give us useful information on the mechanism of action of paracetamol.
