NCT ID: NCT03549390 Completed - Clinical trials for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Investigating the Acute Effect of Alternative Forms of Physical Activity in a Multi-ethnic Population

Start date: October 30, 2018
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

The amount of people with diabetes has now reached over 4 million in the United Kingdom. Type 2 Diabetes accounts for the majority of all cases of diabetes and increases the risk of many other diseases, such as heart disease. Research has shown that individuals from South Asian descent have elevated risk of certain chronic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The risk of developing these diseases can be reduced by engaging in a healthy lifestyle. One component of a healthy lifestyle is engaging in physical activity. However, previous research has shown that South Asian individuals engage in less physical activity, compared to other ethnicities. It is not yet wholly understood why South Asians engage in less physical activity, but it is vitally important to try and find new ways to increase South Asian physical activity levels. Therefore, the investigators have worked with South Asian communities in identifying culturally appropriate forms of physical activity. From this, yoga and walking were identified as two forms of culturally appropriate physical activity. This study will test and compare whether yoga and light intensity walking can be effectively used in the prevention of type 2 diabetes. The results of this study will help the investigators and health policy makers understand how South Asians and other ethnicities respond to exercise, the therapeutic benefits of yoga and help inform future diabetes prevention programmes within multi-ethnic communities.

NCT ID: NCT03548935 Completed - Clinical trials for Overweight or Obesity

STEP 1: Research Study Investigating How Well Semaglutide Works in People Suffering From Overweight or Obesity

STEP 1
Start date: June 4, 2018
Phase: Phase 3
Study type: Interventional

This study will look at the change in participants' body weight from the start to the end of the study. The weight loss in participants taking semaglutide (a new medicine) will be compared to the weight loss of participants taking "dummy" medicine. In addition to taking the medicine, participants will have talks with study staff about healthy food choices, how to be more physically active and what you can do to lose weight. Participants will either get semaglutide or "dummy" medicine - which treatment participants get, is decided by chance. Participants will need to take 1 injection once a week. The study medicine is injected with a thin needle in a skin fold in the stomach, thigh or upper arm. The study has two phases: A main phase and an extension phase. The main phase will last for about 1.5 years. Participants will have 15 clinic visits and 10 phone calls with the study doctor. Extension phase: Approximately 300 participants will continue in the extension phase in the following countries only: Canada, Germany, the UK and selected sites in the US and Japan. These participants will be in the study for about 2.5 years. They will not receive treatment, but will attend another 5 follow-up visits with the study doctor.

NCT ID: NCT03548688 Completed - Clinical trials for Urothelial Carcinoma

Investigation and Detection of Urological Neoplasia in Patients Referred With Suspected Urinary Tract Cancer:

IDENTIFY
Start date: December 14, 2017
Phase:
Study type: Observational

Bladder cancer is common in the UK and can kill. A common sign of bladder cancer is blood in the urine (haematuria). GPs will refer to a specialist (Urologist) for further investigation of haematuria if they suspect cancer. Hospitals often have a 'blanket' approach for investigating patients with haematuria. IDENTIFY will collect data on patients having these tests across the UK and internationally, looking at any trends with an aim to create a personalised diagnostic approach for each patient. The data will give patients the ability to make informed decisions, as well as reducing unnecessary and potentially harmful tests.

NCT ID: NCT03548350 Completed - Physical Activity Clinical Trials

School Based Physical Activity Interventions and Its Impact on Wellbeing and Educational Outcomes

Start date: September 2016
Phase: Phase 1
Study type: Interventional

A school based Physical Activity intervention for pupils (8-9 years old) to promote fitness and wellbeing

NCT ID: NCT03548220 Completed - Clinical trials for Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency

A Study to Evaluate Efficacy and Safety of AG-348 in Not Regularly Transfused Adult Participants With Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency (PKD)

Start date: August 9, 2018
Phase: Phase 3
Study type: Interventional

Study AG348-C-006 evaluated the efficacy and safety of orally administered AG-348 as compared with placebo in participants with pyruvate kinase (PK) deficiency, who were not regularly receiving blood transfusions. Participants were randomized 1:1 to receive either AG-348 or a matching placebo.

NCT ID: NCT03547960 Completed - Clinical trials for Gestational Diabetes

Effect of Fibre Supplements on Gestational Diabetes

GG-GDM
Start date: May 30, 2018
Phase: Early Phase 1
Study type: Interventional

The primary aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of a soluble fibre supplement in the development of gestational diabetes in women at high-risk. The secondary aim will be to evaluate the effect of the soluble fibre supplement on glycaemic control in high-risk women who develop gestational diabetes in early pregnancy. DESIGN The study plans to conduct a randomised open label controlled study to evaluate the effect of the consumption of soluble fibre, from early to mid-pregnancy, on the incidence of gestational diabetes, insulin sensitivity, insulin secretion and metabolic control in GDM diagnosed participants. POPULATION The study team will be studying women with diagnosis of gestational diabetes in previous pregnancies, (considered as high-risk) aged >18 years. TREATMENT Participants in the treatment arms will be 5 gr of Guar gum fibre supplement with meals three times a day (total daily 15 g). Participants in the placebo arms will be taking 5 gr of Cellulose three times a day (total daily dose 15 g). DURATION Participants will be involved for 12 weeks. OUTCOMES Primary outcome: In women with 16-week negative OGTT, GDM at 28 weeks

NCT ID: NCT03547050 Completed - Rolandic Epilepsy Clinical Trials

Rolandic Epilepsy Genomewide Association International Study

REGAIN
Start date: June 1, 2018
Phase:
Study type: Observational

We have discovered a small change in the genetic code which increases the risk of the brainwave abnormality that is found in rolandic epilepsy. We now wish to confirm this using a second much larger sample of patients. We will investigate the other genetic changes that cause people with the brainwave abnormality to develop seizures, as well as problems with speech, coordination, attention and learning.

NCT ID: NCT03546413 Completed - Peanut Allergy Clinical Trials

Follow up of LEAP Participants and Their Families

Start date: July 5, 2018
Phase:
Study type: Observational

This prospective, cross-sectional study was designed to improve understanding of how early-life introduction of peanuts may promote the maintenance of tolerance in adolescence and will serve as an additional safety evaluation of the original nutritional intervention.
