Amantadine appears to be a specific substrate for acetylation by spermidine/spermine N1-acetyltransferase (SSAT). SSAT activity in cancer cells is higher by several-fold compared to normal cells. Amantadine can be used to determine SSAT cellular activity, and may indicate the presence of cancer. This study will provide additional information in conjunction with data from a previous study which include cancer patients and normal health age matched controls to determine whether urinary excretion of acetylamantadine is predictive for the presence of cancer, and if so whether excretion of this metabolite is associated with any particular site of the tumor. Based on the results of the first study additional data in normal healthy volunteers is required. The data from both studies will be analyzed to account for subject gender, stage of disease at time of testing, concurrent diseases, alcohol and tobacco use and occupational characteristics. This is an important first step in validating a cancer detection method that can be implemented economically for screening of large numbers of people at sites remote from limited and expensive diagnostic instrumentation. Thus there is a possibility that this design can be prognosis biomarker as well as a positive/negative indicator.
Following myocardial infarct, cellular therapy is a potential approach to repopulate the injured myocardium, to treat heart failure and restore cardiac function. The purpose of this study is to assess the safety, feasibility and efficacy of intramyocardial delivery of selected autologous CD133+ bone marrow stem cells at the time of coronary artery bypass grafting in patients with chronic ischemic cardiomyopathy.
The surgical management of high-risk endometrial cancer often involves an extensive operation to remove lymph nodes as sites of possible cancer spread. 18F-FDG PET/CT imaging is increasingly being used to identify sites of cancer spread and recently groups have used an intra-operative gamma probe to better localize metastatic disease. In this pilot study, patients with newly diagnosed early stage, high-risk endometrial cancer undergoing primary surgery will have a pre-operative PET scan and intra-operative localization of metastatic lymph nodes with the use of a gamma probe. A complete lymphadenectomy will follow and ability to detect positive lymph nodes of both PET scan and the intra-operative probe will be calculated. This study addresses the feasibility of an FDG detection gamma probe in addition to a pre-operative PET/CT for lymphatic mapping in women with clinical early stage high risk endometrial cancer. The study will also evaluate the role of identifying metastatic lymph nodes intraoperatively that would otherwise be clinically negative.
Rotavirus (RV) is the leading cause of severe gastroenteritis (GE) in young children. The cumulative risk of GE hospitalizations and hospital stays of < 24 hours is 1/25, which would amount to 13,600 Canadian children < 5 years. The incidence of nosocomial RV infections is an average of 8/10,000 patient-days in children < 5 years. An immunization program with a live-attenuated monovalent oral RV vaccine (RV1 - Rotarix® from GSK) will be implemented, free of charge, in the Province of Quebec in November 2011. To provide an accurate portrait of the disease and give critical information to the public health agencies as they struggle to control costs, we aim to evaluate the accuracy of surveillance for RV and other diseases with similar characteristics; estimate selection bias in passive laboratory-based surveillance; and estimate the agreement between surveillance time-series created from passive and active surveillance data sources.
An alternative to systemic heparin anticoagulation for HD is citrate dialysate (CD). CD contains a small amount of citric acid rather than acetic acid as the acidifying agent. The use of citrasate may lead to lower heparin requirements in hemodialysis. This is a randomized, double blinded, two-period crossover trial in HD patients to compare the effect of citrasate dialysis (CD) and usual acetic-acid based dialysate (AD) on heparin dose.
This phase II trial studies how well alisertib works in treating patients with peripheral T-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma that has come back after a period of improvement or has not responded to treatment. Alisertib may stop the growth of cancer cells by blocking some of the enzymes needed for cell growth.
