Cannabis Oil and Radiation Therapy for the Management of Pain

In this innovative approach seeking effective therapeutic strategies, the investigators are proposing to test the effectiveness of medical cannabis oil as an adjunct to palliative Radiation Therapy (RT) and Best Supportive Care to alleviate cancer pain that was only partially relieved with conventional medications. Furthermore, the investigators will assess the effect of medical cannabis oil on health-related quality of life and symptoms that are frequently associated with metastatic cancers including fatigue, anxiety, depression, insomnia and decreased appetite. The safety profile of medical cannabis oil with respect to prolonged use of more than two weeks of administration, concomitant medication use and palliative RT will also be examined.

HFNC During Awake Craniotomy - Impact on Patient Comfort

Background: Patients undergoing awake brain surgery are exposed to non-humidified, non-warmed oxygen/air mix flow through a face mask for a prolonged duration. This causes increased discomfort, inadequate breathing with the risk for hypoxia perioperatively. Humidified high flow nasal cannula (HFNC) oxygen therapy potentially improves patient comfort, oxygen/air exchange, improves surgical conditions and prevents atelectasis of the lung, compared to traditional oxygen administration using a face mask in patients undergoing awake brain surgery. Results of this trial will be used to initiate a more extensive, multicenter trial to further characterize the potential impact of HFNC.

Azoles Targeting Recurrent High Grade Gliomas

High-grade gliomas are the most common and aggressive type of brain cancer. Scientists don't fully understand how they grow and spread, and treatments haven't improved much in recent years. However, it's been discovered that these cancers rely heavily on using glucose to maintain their cancerous traits. In lab tests, drugs from the azole class, which target a key step in glucose metabolism, have shown promise in reducing tumor growth in these cancers. Researchers now want to test two of these drugs, ketoconazole and posaconazole, in patients with recurring high-grade gliomas. A small group of these patients will receive either one or several doses of these drugs before undergoing surgery. During the surgery, doctors will measure how much of the drug is present in the brain. They will also study how the drug affects the tumor, particularly its ability to process glucose. This research aims to provide initial insights into how these drugs work in patients with this type of brain cancer, which could guide future research and treatment strategies.

An Examination of Visual Perceptual Training

Perceptual-cognitive training (PCT) is a computerized software game has been shown to improve sport performance in young elite athletes and even to aid in recovery speeds post-concussion. PCT may represent a unique type of training that could ultimately enhance cognitive performance or quality of life in all populations. What is not clear is whether PCT is beneficial to older adults with subjective memory complaints (SMCs). SMCs in older adults are an early risk indicator for Alzheimer's disease, making older adults with SMCs a target population for proactive interventions. The aim of this study was to determine if PCT can serve as a proactive intervention and enhance cognitive abilities in older adults with SMCs. The results of this research protocol introduce a new way of prevention from cognitive decline in healthy older adults and may introduce a new training programs for age-related memory disorder.
