There are about 28871 clinical studies being (or have been) conducted in Canada. The country of the clinical trial is determined by the location of where the clinical research is being studied. Most studies are often held in multiple locations & countries.
The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of abrilumab on induction of remission in adults with moderate to severe ulcerative colitis after 8 weeks of treatment as assessed by a total Mayo Score ≤ 2 points, with no individual subscore > 1 point.
Increased postprandial plasma triglycerides are associated with increased cardiovascular risk. Chronic consumption of carbohydrates is associated with increased levels of triglycerides. Very few studies have assessed the effect of acute consumption of carbohydrates on plasma triglycerides and lipoprotein production and clearance. The present study aims to assess the effects of acute administration of glucose and fructose on hepatic and intestinal lipoprotein production.
The primary objective of the study is to determine the rate of detection of sub-clinical atrial fibrillation (≥ 5 minutes)within an average of 12 months following implant of the St. Jude Medical Confirm(R) Implantable Cardiac Monitor in patients with known cardiovascular risk factors and left atrial enlargement, but without prior AF.
Research questions: Pilot study research questions: Primary: 1)Can we recruit a sufficient number (i.e., at least 60 patients over 9 months) and retain a sufficient proportion of both men and women (i.e., at least 80% at 2, 4, or 6 months post-randomization) with advanced cancer in all 3 trial arms to allow completion of a full study in 4 years?; 2)Is MMi acceptable: to a general ACP? to both men and women?; Secondary: 1)Is it feasible to complete the intervention in 3-4 weeks? 2)How long is it feasible to test MMi effects: 2, 4 or 6 months post-randomization(retention rate=80%)? 3)Which recruitment strategies are most helpful? 4)What sample size is needed for a full study? Full-study research questions: Primary: Does adding the MMi to usual care (experimental group or EG) enhance meaning in life among newly diagnosed ACP, compared with those receiving usual care plus meetings with an empathic non-professional visitor (i.e., attention-control group or AC) or usual care alone (UC), at x months post-randomization? (time determined in pilot) "Meaning in life" (primary outcome) is defined as the belief that one's life has significance and purpose (i.e., global meaning) and "newly diagnosed ACP" is defined as the 6 months after first occurrence of, progression toward, or recurrence of stage III or IV cancer (TNM classification system). Secondary: In our future full-study, we plan to evaluate MMi effects on secondary outcomes such as existential wellbeing (MQOL existential wellbeing) and posttraumatic growth (Post-Traumatic Growth Inventory). We also plan to test a theoretical model where sense of meaning in life has a protective (moderating) effect on tertiary outcomes such as physical QoL (MQOL physical subscale), anxiety and depression (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS)), and overall QoL (MQOL Total) in EG patients. Methodology: RCT pilot study with 60 newly diagnosed ACP (stages III or IV) within 2 months of referral and 6 months of randomization, assigned randomly to: (1) EG, (2) AC, or (3) UC. Patients will complete self-report questionnaires (including outcome measures, as well as sociodemographic and medical variables) at 2, 4 and 6 months post-randomization.
This phase II trial studies how well ipilimumab works in treating patients with human papilloma virus (HPV)-related cervical cancer that has come back or that has spread to other areas of the body. Monoclonal antibodies, such as ipilimumab, can find tumor cells and help kill them or carry tumor-killing substances to them.
This is a multicenter, open-label, first-time-in-human study with a standard 3+3 dose-escalation phase in participants with advanced solid tumors followed by an expansion phase in participants with advanced solid tumors. An exploration cohort has been added to determine the safety using every 4 weeks (Q4W) dosing.
Weight gained during pregnancy is referred to as gestational weight gain (GWG). Excess GWG is a widespread problem that occurs in 55-75% of Canadian women who enter pregnancy overweight or obese (a group that represents over 50 % of all pregnant women) and about 40% women of normal weight. Excess GWG is associated with complications of pregnancy, such as post-partum weight retention, type 2 diabetes, elevated fats in the blood, and high blood pressure and may also lead to problems with the health of the newborn child. Our research aims to find ways to control GWG by developing new and practical approaches to diet and exercise targeted to overweight pregnant women that hold promise of improving their health both during pregnancy and thereafter. The experimental intervention is a diet of higher protein provided by dairy foods combined with an exercise program modified to the abilities of overweight pregnant women; and the control is the usual advice given by their primary care providers, information on healthy pregnancy from Health Canada, and a focus group session exploring women's experiences with exercise, nutrition, and gestational weight gain. The results of this study will allow us to design future large clinical studies in all pregnant women to help control the weight gain in all pregnant women.
This study will be divided into two phases. The purpose of the Phase I registry is to assess the current force being used for ablation of symptomatic paroxysmal AF in a wide range of operators in different Canadian centres with the operators being blinded to the contact force data. In Phase II of the study, operators will have open use of the force contact data. Phase I and II data will be compared in order to assess the efficiency of using the THERMOCOOL® SMARTTOUCH™ catheter.
The purpose of this study is to determine if high doses of vitamin D3 administered orally as adjunct therapy to children with Crohn's disease could improve the outcome of the disease.
Background: Trauma is a major cause of death in children and teenagers. When young patients have suffered major traumatic injuries, they require intravenous (iv) fluids to keep their blood vessels full and ensure blood flow to vital organs. Current fluid guidelines by International Trauma Committees recommend either Normal Saline (NS) or Ringer's Lactate (RL) as the fluid of choice for these patients. Although these solutions share some similarities in their composition, there are also some significant differences in sodium, chloride and lactate concentrations. Despite these differences in fluid composition, there has never been a study comparing these two fluids in paediatric trauma patients to determine which is optimal. In this study, the investigators aim to determine the optimal fluid choice for trauma resuscitation of young patients. Hypothesis: The investigators hypothesize that severely injured paediatric trauma patients resuscitated with NS will have optimal blood sodium levels compared to patients resuscitated with RL. Methods: The investigators will study 50 paediatric trauma patients that will be randomized so that half will randomly receive NS and half will receive RL as their only iv fluid for 24 hours. After 24 hours, the investigators will compare in blood the sodium level, the amount of acid, and the concentrations of inflammation molecules in relation to those whom received NS versus RL. Expected Results and Significance: Maintaining optimal levels of these biochemical markers is imperative in reducing morbidity and mortality in severely injured paediatric patients. If significant differences are present, the investigators will be able to determine which fluid is preferred and expect these data to complement current trauma resuscitation guidelines.
