Cognitive Processing in Preterm Infants and NICU Music Therapy

Several positive physiological and behavioural outcomes have been observed in preterm infants exposed to music therapy during their stay at Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU). There is ample evidence in the literature showing that brief exposure to music can lead to superior performance on a host of cognitive tasks in laboratory settings in children, adolescent and adults. However, till date no study has examined the cognitive benefits of NICU music therapy in preterm infants. Further habituation tests have been employed to examine cognitive functioning in infants in laboratory setting but the same test have not been employed as a measure to examine early cognitive functioning in preterm infants. This project will be carried out to examine the benefits of NICU music therapy on the cognitive functioning of preterm infants born at 27- 33 weeks of gestational age. A randomized controlled research design will be employed to compare cognitive functioning between the treatment and control group at 18 - 24 months of corrected gestational age. The treatment group will be exposed to music therapy during their stay in NICU and the controlled group will be exposed to all standardized care available at our institution except music therapy. Habituation tests will be used to examine cognitive functioning of the preterm infants in groups at 18 - 24 months of gestational age.

Finding the Optimal Regimen for Mycobacterium Abscessus Treatment

Mycobacterium abscessus (MABS) is a group of rapid-growing, multi-drug resistant non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) causing infections in humans. MABS pulmonary disease (MABS-PD) can result in significant morbidity, increased healthcare utilisation, accelerated lung function decline, impaired quality of life, more challenging lung transplantation, and increased mortality. While the overall numbers affected is small, the prevalence of infections is increasing worldwide. The Finding the Optimal Regimen for Mycobacterium abscessus Treatment (FORMaT) trial aims to produce high quality evidence for the best treatment regimens to maximise health outcomes and minimise toxicity and treatment burden, as well as developing biomarkers (serology, gene expression signatures, and radiology) to guide decisions for starting treatment and measuring disease severity in patients with MABS PD.

This study is designed to: 1. Create 4 short PLMs aimed at improving visual estimation of LVEF on TTE images. 2. Design a study to determine if these online PLMs can be used to increase the ability of medical students to estimate LVEF on TTE images and create long term retention of this skill. The hypothesis of the study is that several short PLM sessions over a period of approximately 1 month will improve the ability of third- and fourth-year novice medical students in echocardiography to visually estimate LVEF using TTE images.

A Safety and Efficacy Study of Intravenous (IV) Elezanumab Assessing Change in Neurologic Function in Adult Participants With Acute Ischemic Stroke

Stroke is one of the leading causes death and major functional disability worldwide. Treatment options for acute stroke are limited with many patients having residual neurologic impairment. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the safety and efficacy of elezanumab and assess change in neurologic function in participants following an acute ischemic stroke. Elezanumab is an investigational drug being developed for the treatment of acute ischemic stroke. This 52-week study is "double-blinded', which means that neither the participants nor the study doctors will know who will be given elezanumab and who will be given placebo (does not contain treatment drug). Participants will be assigned to one of two groups, called treatment arms. Participants in one arm will receive elezanumab and participants in the other arm will receive placebo. There is a 1 in 2 chance that participants will be assigned to placebo. Approximately 120 subjects will be enrolled in 45 sites worldwide. Participants will be randomized to elezanumab or placebo by intravenous (IV) infusion within 24 hours of "last known normal" (time when the participant was last known to be without signs and symptoms of the current stroke) and every 4 weeks thereafter for 48 weeks for a total of 13 doses. There may be a higher treatment burden for participants in this trial compared to their standard of care. Participants will attend regular visits during the course of the study at a hospital or clinic. The effect of elezanumab will be checked by medical assessments, blood tests, evaluation of side effects, and completion of questionnaires.

Augmenting Reactive Stepping With FES After SCI

Up to 25 individuals living with chronic incomplete spinal cord injury (iSCI) who can stand but have limited ability to elicit a step without physical assistance or upper limb (U/L) support will be recruited for this study. The first objective of the study will aim to investigate the orthotic effect (i.e., immediate effect) of FES on the reactive stepping response. The second objective is to investigate the therapeutic effect of a novel balance intervention, perturbation-based balance training (PBT) combined with FES (i.e., PBT+FES) on reactive stepping ability, measures of postural sway during quiet standing (i.e., biomechanical measures), and scores on clinical measures of balance and walking.

Saliva Insulin Responses to a Standardized Meal Tolerance Test in Humans

Recent evidence suggests that hyperinsulinemia (i.e., elevated insulin levels) is the primary causative factor in obesity. Insulin promotes fat storage and prevents fat breakdown, suggesting that weight loss would be optimized if insulin levels are managed and kept low. Understanding how different foods impact insulin levels could therefore aid in personalized weight loss (or weight maintenance) advice. It has been shown that salivary insulin can track plasma insulin following different meals and can delineate between lean and obese people. Thus, it was suggested that salivary insulin could be a potential surrogate for plasma insulin. The purpose of this study is to measure fasting saliva insulin, and salivary insulin responses to a standardized meal tolerance test in individuals with different body mass index (BMI).
