Maintaining Muscle Mass Gains

Mental imagery is effective for improving motor skills as well as increasing muscles strength and size. Strength is also maintained after immobilization of a muscles when engaging in imagery. This may have important implications for rehabilitation settings and for sedentary individuals. We may not be able to get people wot exercise but if they can maintain muscles size and strength via imagery this may have beneficial health and functional outcomes.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect SutureSafe dressings have on reducing scarring from an incision following an elective abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) procedure. The scar will be evaluated using subjective clinical assessment criteria. Each participant in the study will serve as a control and experiential study, since have of the incision will be treated with the gold standard of care and the other half with SutureSafe dressings.

Detection of Flap Ischemia Using Interstitial Glucose Monitor

A simple device that objectively assesses flap perfusion - either as a stand-alone tool or an adjunct to the current monitoring method - would be a tremendous improvement in detection of early postoperative flap ischemia and, in turn, increase flap salvage and survival. In this study, the investigators aim to examine the accuracy and reliability of measuring interstitial glucose levels using Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) technology as an objective method of detecting postoperative flap tissue ischemia in patients undergoing free flap-based reconstructive surgery.

Safety of Adipose-Derived Stem Cell Stromal Vascular Fraction

A single-arm, open-labeled, single-center, descriptive and exploratory safety trial using ADSC-SVF-002. ADSC-SVF-002 is an autologous adipose derived stem cell (ADSC)-containing stromal vascular fraction (SVF) obtained from subcutaneous fat harvested by liposuction from a patient. As a cellular therapy product, ADSC-SVF-002 (fresh or cryopreserved) will be administered subcutaneously via injection, with or without unprocessed autologous fat (fresh or cryopreserved), into soft tissue defects and abnormally healing wounds. The primary objective of the trial is to demonstrate the safety of ADSC-SVF-002 in a population of subjects with soft tissue defects or abnormal wound healing who are still symptomatic despite being managed by conventional therapies.

Amantadine and Functional Improvement Following ABI Measured by MRI Tractography; A Pilot Study

This is a pilot study. The objective is to further understand the mechanism by which amantadine improves function in patients with persistent vegetative state and minimally conscious state. Specifically, the investigators will measure the size of the nerve fibers that mediate arousal (reticular activating system, or RAS) pre and post treatment on MRI tractography. MRI findings will be correlated with the Disability Rating Scale (DRS) score. The information gathered from this study will be used to formulate a larger clinical trial.

Standardizing Language in Laparoscopic Surgery

Obstetrics and Gynecology residents, fellows and attending physicians will be randomized to view one of two educational presentations of equal duration. The "intervention" presentation will demonstrate the use of a standardized language for effective communication of laparoscopy commands. Both groups will be asked to perform a simulated laparoscopic task. Participants will be timed and use of the standardized language will be tracked and tabulated. The primary outcome of interest is whether the use of standard commands during a simulated laparoscopic task is associated with sooner completion of the task. This may translate into improved efficiency in the operating room.

A Trial of Cognitive Training in Euthymic Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder (BD) is characterized by extreme changes in mood and emotion dysregulation. Mood changes are episodic in nature, with distinct periods of mania, depression, and asymptomatic periods of euthymia. In addition to impairments in mood, cognitive impairments are a common feature of the disorder. These cognitive impairments persist during periods of euthymia and are associated with negative clinical and psychosocial outcomes. Specifically, individuals with BD show impairments in executive functions. Recent studies show that emotion regulation can be down-regulated by taxing executive functions, and it can be improved with working memory training, a specific component of executive functions. These initial studies show that emotion regulation is under executive control in healthy individuals; however, the nature of this relationship is not well understood in populations that are affected by impairments in both executive control and emotion regulation. Previous work on cognitive training has not targeted specific cognitive domains with an emphasis on understanding the underlying mechanisms that promote change. Moreover, well-controlled randomized control trial (RCT) studies are needed in order to provide high quality evidence to inform the efficacy of cognitive training interventions for psychiatric populations. The aim of the proposed study is to use a commercially available cognitive training program to study the effects of working memory training on cognitive, clinical, and psychosocial outcomes in patients with BD. We hypothesize that training working memory will lead to improvements in cognitive and emotional functioning, leading to downstream changes that will positively impact untrained outcomes, such as mood and community functioning.
