The goal of the present study is to assess the safety of a topical probiotic (probiotic strain; SS-POR11) on acne prone-skin, and the impact of SS-POR11 on the distribution of porphyrins, in subjects with mild-to-moderate acne [Investigator's Global Assessment (IGA) 1-3].
National multi-center non interventional study aiming at investigating the effectiveness and safety of the combination mifepristone-misoprostol prescribed in Canada to women for medical termination of pregnancy at or before 63 days gestational age through a multi-center prospective non interventional study design.
Hirschsprung's Disease (HD) and anorectal malformations (ARM) are both paediatric diseases of the colon and rectum. Both of these conditions require surgery in order to correct them, frequently needing sections of the bowel to be removed. Some complications of removing parts of the bowel include forming a stricture (a narrowing of the place where the bowel is reattached), and leak from the join. These can be devastating complications, and can significantly impact a patient's quality of life. Indocyanine green (ICG) is a medication that binds to blood vessels and can be visualized using special cameras in the operating room. Once it binds, it "lights up" green on this equipment. This lends the advantage of being able to better see which parts of the bowel get good blood flow. The theory is that good blood flow can reduce the risks of previously mentioned complications. This has been shown to be true in a variety of bowel surgeries in adults. ICG has also been shown to be safe in children. Given that HD and ARM are both relatively rare conditions (~1/5000 live births), research in this area needs to be strategic. The investigators want to ensure that the investigators can recruit enough patients to the study using this protocol such that if this were to be scaled up to a multi-centre trial in the future, the investigators could demonstrate feasibility. The investigators will collect data both on the feasibility of recruitment as the primary outcome and secondary outcomes including stricture, leak, length of stay in hospital, and return to hospital.
Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) infection is a global health problem. HCV mainly affects liver cells and causes the liver to become inflamed and damaged. This study will evaluate how safe and effective glecaprevir/pibrentasvir (GLE/PIB) is in adult and adolescent participants with acute HCV infection. GLE/PIB is an approved drug for the treatment of chronic HCV. Around 283 participants at least 12 years of age with acute HCV Infection will be enrolled in approximately 70 sites worldwide. Participants will receive oral tablets of GLE/PIB once daily (QD) for 8 weeks and will be followed for 12 weeks after the end of treatment. There may be higher treatment burden for participants in this trial compared to their standard of care. Participants will attend regular visits during the study at a hospital or clinic. The effect of the treatment will be checked by medical assessments, blood tests, monitoring for side effects and completing questionnaires.
(i) To validate the inversed occlusion technique by comparing the results of resistance obtained on the relaxed expiratory occlusion monitor (REOM) with the resistance obtained with respiratory oscillometry (OSC) measurements on the tremoflo® C-100 and (ii) explore (within-test and day-to-day) repeatability and responsiveness to change of this technique when used as home monitoring device in children with asthma.
One in five Canadians live with chronic pain, defined as pain that lasts longer than 3-months. Living with chronic pain has a detrimental impact on physical health, emotional health, and quality of life. Current treatments rarely result in pain relief and often do not meaningfully improve physical or emotional function. Further, medication used to treat pain often causes unwanted symptoms. There is a need to develop new treatments to help manage chronic pain. The use of a nasal spray containing manufactured oxytocin may improve pain management. Oxytocin is produced in the human body and has been shown to impact the pain pathway in animals. Our project tests whether the use of a nasal spray containing oxytocin will improve pain and function in men and women who live with chronic pain. Men and women with chronic nerve, muscle, or pelvic pain will be recruited in Vancouver, Calgary, and St. John's. Each person will be assigned to complete three interventions in a random order. Each intervention involves using a nasal spray twice per day over a 2-week period. The nasal spray will contain a small dose of oxytocin during one intervention and a medium dose during the second intervention. The nasal spray during the final intervention will have no oxytocin. This final intervention is a control intervention that will allow us to measure the effect of simply taking a nasal spray (i.e., the impact of expectation). Participants and researchers will not know which interventions involve the use of oxytocin. Participants will rate their pain and function each day throughout each task. The investigators will calculate each person's score on pain and function. The investigators will test whether participants report less pain and better function when they use oxytocin compared to the control. The results of this project may improve pain, function, and quality of life among those who live with chronic pain.
This is an international, cross-sectional and descriptive study that aims to investigate differences in patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) and patient-reported experience measures (PREMs) and that aims to explore the profile and healthcare needs of adults with congenital heart diseases.
Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is a major cause of maternal death worldwide. Oxytocin is the most commonly used uterotonic drug for the active management of third stage labor, to reduce the risk of PPH and help deliver the placenta. Carbetocin is currently recommended by the SOGC (Society of Obstetricans & Gynecologists of Canada), and is a relatively newer drug with a longer duration of action. It has been previously demonstrated that women with elevated BMI require higher doses of these drugs to induce adequate uterine contraction and dose finding studies undertaken at Mount Sinai Hospital have shown that the ED 90 in obese patients to be carbetocin 80 mcg and oxytocin 1IU. Furthermore, previous studies have indicated that the use of carbetocin over oxytocin in non-obese popultion is associated with reduced bleeding and requirement of additional uterotonic medications. No study has directly compared the two drugs in obese parturients in a head to head clinical trial; therefore a double-blind randomized controlled trial is necessary to show the non-inferiority of carbetocin against the current standard of care at Mount Sinai hospital, which is oxytocin.
Chronic pain management is complex, with healthcare providers historically relying on prescribing opioid medications such as morphine. Although opioids may partially improve pain, there are risks associated with them as well, including pain worsening, side effects, addiction and overdose. It is now understood that the management of chronic pain is more effective when multiple healthcare team members work together and incorporate multiple strategies instead of focusing solely on medications. An example of an effective, non-drug strategy for pain is a service offered by clinical psychologists called "Acceptance and Commitment Therapy" - or ACT - which empowers individuals, to implement alternative ways of thinking about and reacting to pain and its effect on their lives. Canada has responded to the opioid overdose crisis with new guidelines that encourage physicians and those suffering from chronic pain to aim for lower opioid doses whenever possible, a process often referred to as "tapering." Unsurprisingly, tapering opioids is often difficult for patients to consider, primarily due to misconceptions that it will cause more harm than good. This project aims to address these misconceptions by developing and offering an all-day educational workshop for patients, co-presented by a healthcare team (clinical psychologists, pharmacists and physicians), to provide in-depth information on opioid related risks and misconceptions, as well as a large component focusing on ACT training. Investigators then want to see if these sessions change individual attitudes towards opioid tapering and if it improves willingness and ability to successfully reduce opioid doses to a safer level.
