There are about 28871 clinical studies being (or have been) conducted in Canada. The country of the clinical trial is determined by the location of where the clinical research is being studied. Most studies are often held in multiple locations & countries.
The purpose of this study is to test if the vaccine is working well in COPD patients aged 40 to 80 years old to reduce episodes of worsening symptoms ("exacerbations") and to gather further information on safety and immune response. In the current study, COPD patients with a history of acute exacerbations will receive 2 doses of the investigational vaccine or placebo intramuscularly according to a 0, 2 month vaccination schedule, in addition to standard care. The effect of vaccination against two pathogens known to cause exacerbations (Non-typeable Haemophilus influenza [NTHi] and Moraxella catarrhalis [Mcat]) will be evaluated at pre-defined timepoints (scheduled study visits). In addition to the scheduled study visits, additional study visit(s) and/ or phone contact(s) will take place for each acute exacerbation of COPD occurring from first vaccination up to study conclusion.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the use of Transoral Robotic Surgery (TORS) to identify small oropharyngeal carcinomas. Findings from this study will be used to better determine which patients may be suitable for more targeted radiotherapy that would lead to a reduction in the total amount of radiotherapy needed as part of their treatment. Reducing the amount of radiotherapy received has been found to reduce the risk of late complications and toxicity to the patient.The pathologic findings will then be used to determine patients who may be candidates for de-intensification of radiotherapy.
With aging there is a natural loss of muscle mass and strength called sarcopenia, which increases the risk of falls and metabolic disease (i.e. Type II diabetes) and decreases the ability to perform activities of daily living. Eating protein and doing resistance exercise both increase the body's ability to make muscle protein, which is important to offset losses in muscle mass; however, older adults have a lower appetite and do not consume enough calories or protein to crease muscle and as such investigations in this population are needed. The amino acid (the building blocks of proteins) leucine is known to increase the ability of protein to make muscle. In this study we will investigate the ability of beverages with different types of protein and leucine to create muscle in older men and women whoa re particularly vulnerable to muscle losses and do not eat enough protein and are understudied in this area.
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a common and under-diagnosed breathing disorder characterized by recurrent partial or complete collapse of the upper airway (tongue, soft palate) during sleep. It causes recurrent episodes of asphyxia (suffocation) resulting in fragmented sleep, low blood oxygen levels (hypoxemia), and high carbon dioxide concentrations. Untreated OSA is associated with serious heart/lung and metabolic diseases including strokes, diabetes, and heart attacks. When a patient with OSA undergoes surgery, the symptoms of OSA are exacerbated afterwards due to the effects of anesthesia and related medications such as those used for pain control. This puts patients at higher risk for complications and necessitates nursing care and monitoring that are resource intensive. In many hospitals, patients with an OSA diagnosis are monitored after surgery in "high acuity" wards where the nurse to patient ratio is higher than usual. These high acuity/monitored beds are often in high demand, and their unavailability may sometimes mean cancellation of surgery or prolonged patient stay in the Post-operative Recovery Room, further causing operating room backlog. Another serious issue is that many patients do not know they actually have the OSA condition. It is estimated that up to 20% (1) of people in the general public have OSA and that 75% (2) of them are not diagnosed. When someone with OSA goes for surgery without previously being diagnosed, special precautions in care and monitoring may not be in place, until a complication develops. For this reason, this population - those most susceptible to have OSA, but with no previous formal testing for the condition - is the most at risk for complications, and is the target group for this trial. We plan to identify the study population by screening for OSA using the STOP-BANG questionnaire. Those who score high on this 8 item screening test have high likelihood of actually having OSA if they were to undergo formal testing and diagnosis in a Sleep Lab. We will identify cardio-respiratory complications by conducting a chart review and determine whether admission to a "high acuity" bed had any impact. As OSA patients are at higher risk for cardiovascular complications at baseline and around the time of surgery, blood test for troponin will be performed on post-op day 1 and 2 to investigate the rate of myocardial injury. With the rate of MINS (myocardial injury after non-cardiac surgery) reported to be 8% with almost 10% 30 day mortality (per VISION trial), this pilot project which focuses on arthroplasty patients with suspected OSA, will inform us of the arthroplasty surgery specific MINS risk for comparison.
The purpose of this study is to determine the efficacy and safety of omalizumab compared with placebo in adult participants with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) who have had an inadequate response to standard-of-care treatments. Study GA39855 (POLYP 2; NCT03280537) was another Phase III study by the Sponsor with identical objectives and design and was run in parallel with this study.
This Non-Interventional Study will describe and analyze the clinical use of palbociclib in routine clinical practice in the treatment of advanced breast cancer.
The investigators hope to answer the question, "does ketorolac increase the risk of hematoma after reduction mammoplasty?" using a case-control study. All patients who developed a hematoma post reduction mammoplasty (cases) at our institution, and match these with women who had an uncomplicated reduction mammoplasty (controls), and then compare frequency of ketorolac exposure between these two groups as the primary outcome. If ketorolac increases the risk of hematoma, one should expect cases to have been exposed to ketorolac more frequently than controls. Based on previously existing literature, the investigators hypothesize that cases and controls will not differ in their ketorolac exposure, that is, ketorolac does not increase the risk of hematoma.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the combined remission of complex perianal fistulas, defined as the clinical assessment at Week 24 of closure of all treated external openings that were draining at baseline despite gentle finger compression, and absence of collections greater than (>) 2 centimeter (cm) (in at least 2 dimensions) confirmed by blinded central magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) assessment at Week 24.
This is a single-center, single-arm, open-label, pilot trial to evaluate the efficacy and safety of avelumab in subjects with unresectable or metastatic, Grade 3, poorly-differentiated neuroendocrine.carcinoma.
Prospective, randomized and controlled who will be conducted in Maisonneuve-Rosemont hospital and whose objectives are: - To observe if the alterations of the NoL index and the standard monitoring (Mean Arterial Blood Pressure and Heart Rate) (using the variability of NoL index and standard monitoring, peak NoL index and peak standard monitoring values, and number of time passed over their respective threshold for nociceptive response) are more accentuated after laryngoscopy using the classical MAC blade versus single-use disposable blade of the Glidescope. - To observe the nociceptive response (using the variability of NoL index and standard monitoring, peak NoL index and peak standard monitoring values, and number of time passed over their respective threshold for nociceptive response) related to the insertion of endotracheal tube between vocal cords during the intubation. Study plans to enroll 50 adult patients scheduled to undergo either general, gynecological, neurological, orthopedic, plastic or urological surgery under general anesthesia and who necessitate endotracheal intubation.
