Evaluation of Food Additive Contributions to Obesity - Feasibility Study 1

The effects of food additives on body weight in humans are largely unknown. This is a before-and-after feasibility study in 5 obese adults who will be followed for 5 months. Eligible participants will meet with the study team and will be taught how to limit the exposure to the studied food additives in their diet. Participants will also be asked to limit eating out to a maximum of 2 days per week. Primary outcomes in this study are recruitment rate, retention rate and adherence to the proposed dietary intervention.

This study is being done to test the FLIP device, a novel device developed and manufactured by Endra Life Sciences, located in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The purpose of the device is to measure the fat content of liver tissue to assist in the diagnosis of fatty liver disease. This feasibility study will involve 25 healthy volunteers having their liver imaged by traditional ultrasound and MRI methods as well as using the FLIP device. The data obtained by the FLIP will be compared with the data obtained by ultrasound and MRI in order to determine the effectiveness of the device. This is a preliminary study to see if the investigational device could eventually be used to image the liver alongside traditional ultrasound for discerning fat concentration.

The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the abuse potential of single doses of cebranopadol (GRT6005) relative to hydromorphone (immediate-release formulation [IR] and placebo in 48 non-dependent recreational opioid users. Secondary objectives were to evaluate the abuse potential of hydromorphone IR compared to placebo (trial validation), to evaluate the safety and tolerability of single doses of cebranopadol (200, 400, and 800 micrograms), and to evaluate pharmacokinetics (PK) of cebranopadol and optionally some of its metabolites.

The Effect of Exercise on Recent Onset Low Back Pain in the Emergency Department

Low back pain (LBP) is the leading contributor to years lived with disability and an important contributor to healthcare costs and time off work. Exercise is effective for chronic low back pain, but there is a lack of evidence to inform whether exercise in the emergency department is effective for people with acute low back pain. This randomized controlled trial will evaluate the effectiveness of a brief exercise intervention provided in the emergency department for people with recent onset low back pain. People with acute low back pain (<1 week) will be randomly assigned to either usual care or to usual care plus a brief exercise intervention delivered by trained physiotherapy students. The study will evaluate the impact of the added exercises on self-reported disability (primary outcome), pain intensity, global rating of change, patient satisfaction, and adverse events. In addition, we will pilot data collection related to return to work, healthcare utilization, and cost effectiveness outcomes to determine the feasibility of conducting a future trial with additional patient participants required to evaluate these outcomes. Outcomes will be evaluated at baseline, 48-72 hours, 1-week, 1-month, and 3-months from their initial emergency department visit. The results of this study have the potential to inform emergency department management of acute low back pain.

This is Single-Arm, Open-Label Efficacy and Safety Trial of Fedratinib in Subjects with DIPSS (Dynamic International Prognostic Scoring System)-Intermediate or High- Risk Primary Myelofibrosis (PMF), Post-Polycythemia Vera Myelofibrosis (post-PV MF), or Post-Essential Thrombocythemia Myelofibrosis (post-ET MF) and Previously Treated with Ruxolitinib. The primary objective of the study is to evaluate the percentage of subjects with at least a 35% reduction in spleen size and one of the secondary objectives is to evaluate the safety of fedratinib.

Short chain fructooligosaccharide (FOS) is known as a prebiotic fiber/nutrient and has been documented to demonstrate different health benefits including glucose control, gut health, mineral absorption, weight and immunity. FossenceTM is a short chain fructo-oligosaccharide (scFOS), sweet tasting, soluble prebiotic dietary fibre which is produced through Tata Chemicals Limited's patented process and is currently US GRAS notified (safe for consumption). The formulation and properties of scFOS suggest that the molecule may potentially play a role in glucose and insulin metabolism. The purpose of this study is to explore the rise of glucose and insulin in the blood after consuming FossenceTM that has been added or substituted into a sugar drink or white bread.

Effects of Cranberry Powder Supplements on Gut Microbiota Diversity and Metabolic Syndrome

It is of major importance to refine prevention strategies in order to alleviate inflammation, insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome and it appear that improving gut health and microbiota represent a promising strategy. Cranberry-enriched diets may help prevent metabolic syndrome and its associated chronic diseases by a protective effect of gut health and microbiota. It is therefore highly relevant to test the hypothesis that a whole cranberry powder supplements (which include a mixture of polyphenols, free and fiber-associated proanthocyanidins, and fruits fibers) is associated with changes on the gut health and microbiota playing a major role in alleviating inflammation and obesity-associated metabolic disorders.
