This study will evaluate the efficacy of etanercept in patients with plaque psoriasis who have lost a satisfactory response to adalimumab.
Liraglutide is a glucagon like peptide -1 (GLP-1) agonist, which is approved for use in patients with type 2 diabetes. Studies of liraglutide have shown an appetite suppressive effect and has been associated with weight loss in patients with type 2 diabetes. Liraglutide use in the treatment of PWS is limited to one case report by Cyganek et el (See attached Citation). In this case report, the subject showed improvements in hemoglobin A1c and body weight over 14 weeks. The investigators plan to examine the use of liraglutide in a single subject with Prader Willi Syndrome and type 2 diabetes for one year. The investigators will examine clinical parameters, clinical assessment of hunger, and biochemical markers of diabetes and lipid control.

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection that causes genital sores and rash, but in some circumstances may result in more severe and unexpected symptoms. These severe symptoms could include eye infections, meningitis (infection of the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord), and liver infection. If not properly treated, syphilis can also lead to heart problems and dementia (a decline in reasoning, memory and other mental abilities) years down the road. There has been an increase in the number of reported cases of syphilis in North America, Europe, and Australia over the past decade. The number of new syphilis infections in Canada has increased roughly 10-fold over the past 10 years. Since 1943, the antibiotic penicillin has been used to treat syphilis; however, very little information has been gathered to determine the proper dose of penicillin or appropriate duration of treatment. Added to this, several studies have shown that the recommended dose of penicillin fails to cure syphilis in 20-30% of patients. Since the number of people infected with syphilis is increasing, and since syphilis has the potential to cause serious disease, the investigators need better information on how to treat syphilis effectively. This study aims to determine whether the current dose of penicillin recommended to treat syphilis is sufficient to cure the infection. Specifically the investigators will try to determine whether the amount of penicillin in your blood 3 and 7 days after receiving treatment for syphilis is sufficient to cure the infection as demonstrated by a blood test 6 or 12 months from now. This study is a multi-centered trial based in Ottawa but with centers recruiting both in Montreal and Toronto. A total of 120 participants with syphilis will be recruited into this study. The treatment you will receive for syphilis in this study does not differ from that you would receive normally; the investigators are only observing the levels of penicillin in your blood and relating them with the outcome of treatment.
This is a multi-centre, randomised, double-blind, active treatment, parallel group induction study in subjects with moderately-to-severely active Crohn's disease. Subjects will receive one of two doses (500 milligrams once daily, 500 milligrams twice daily) of GSK1605786A for 12 weeks. The primary objective of the study is to induce clinical response (Crohn's Disease Activity Index [CDAI] decrease from baseline of at least 100 points) and/or remission (CDAI score less than 150) with GSK1605786A at Week 12 in subjects with active Crohn's disease to qualify subjects for enrolment into a 52 week maintenance study (CCX114157). Secondary objectives will include assessment of the safety and evaluation of the efficacy in induction of clinical response or remission. Safety will be assessed by recording of adverse events and assessment of changes in clinical laboratory parameters, vital signs and electrocardiogram. Population pharmacokinetics will evaluate the two doses of GSK1605786A. Health outcomes assessments will include changes in Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire, SF-36, EQ-5D, and Work Productivity and Activity Impairment-Crohn's Disease.
Macular epiretinal membrane (ERM) is a semitranslucent, avascular, fibrocellular membrane on the inner surface along the internal limiting membrane (ILM) of the retina. ERM may cause symptomatic visual disturbances and vision loss. Since the 1970s, pars plana vitrectomy has been performed to remove the membranes with few complications, and surgical results are generally good. Recurrence rates of 5-16% have been reported. Recently, ILM peeling in ERM surgery have been popularized by a number of retrospective studies and one prospective case series to minimize the rate of ERM recurrences (16% recurrence in ERM surgery with ILM peel compares to 0% recurrence in ERM surgery without ILM peel). Surgical removal of the friable and transparent ILM is difficult and increases the risk of trauma to the retina. In addition, indocyanine green (ICG), a dye commonly used intra-operatively to enhance ILM visualization, is costly and has been shown to be toxic to the retina. The investigators study will be the first randomized-controlled multi-centred clinical trial to compare the outcomes of ERM surgery with and without ILM peeling. The results will help guide and standardize the surgical treatment of macular ERM; to minimize unnecessary surgical risks, as well as to help economize healthcare cost.
The purpose of this study is to examine the long-term safety and tolerability of USL261 in the treatment of seizure clusters.
Pancreatic cysts are becoming diagnosed more frequently due to the increased use and sensitivity of imaging. A subset of these cysts are pre-cancerous, therefore suggested treatment is surgery for removal. However, surgery involves significant risks and emerging opinion suggests that not all cysts need to be surgically removed. An alternative therapy would be ideal, in particular for those where surgical risk outweighs the benefits of resection. Ethanol and paclitaxel ablation of pancreatic cysts may be a viable alternative to surgical resection. Our hypothesis is that ethanol with paclitaxel ablation is a safe and effective method for treatment in those with per-cancerous, mucinous pancreatic cysts.
