The COPE Trial is a randomized controlled trial that will provide currently isolated yet generally physically healthy 18-64 year old adults who are pre-retirement with the opportunity to receive a free 3-month subscription to either a yoga or moderate-to-high intensity aerobic exercise app or be randomized to a waitlist control group. Study outcomes include measures of psychological wellbeing and physical health.
The clinical picture of the novel corona virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) disease (COVID-19) is rapidly evolving. Although infections may be mild, up to 25% of all patients admitted to hospital require admission to the intensive care unit, and as many as 40% will progress to develop severe problems breathing due to the acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). ARDS often requires mechanical ventilation, with a 50% risk of mortality. Researchers at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) have been studying the potential therapeutic role of mesenchymal stromal/stem cells, or MSCs, for the treatment of ARDS for over a decade. This has led to the world's first clinical trial using MSC therapy for patients with severe infections (sepsis) which is often associated with ARDS (NCT02421484). This trial demonstrated tolerability, and potential signs of efficacy. In addition, the investigators have established expertise in producing clinical-grade MSCs and have received approval from Health Canada for the use of MSCs in three different clinical studies. This protocol consists of 2 sequential trials using the same trial infrastructure, noted as the Phase 1 trial 'CIRCA-1901' and the Phase 2a trial 'CIRCA-1902'. CIRCA-1901 is an open-label, dose-escalating and safety trial using a 3+3+3 design to determine the safety, and maximum feasible tolerated dose of repeated delivery of Umbilical Cord Mesenchymal Stromal Cells (UC-MSC) intravenously. The investigators will enroll up to 9 patients; each receiving repeated unit doses of UC-MSCs delivered by IV infusion on each of 3 consecutive days (24±4 hours apart) according to the following dose-escalation schedule (3 patients per dose panel): (i) Panel 1: 25 million cells/unit dose (cumulative dose: 75 million MSCs), (ii) Panel 2: 50 million cells/unit dose (cumulative dose: 150 million MSCs), (iii) Panel 3: up to 90 million cells/unit dose (cumulative dose: up to 270 million MSCs). If no safety issues are identified, we will continue to the Phase 2a trial. CIRCA-1902 is a single-arm, open-label extension of the CIRCA-1901 trial to assess early signs of efficacy (major morbidity and mortality). The Phase 2a trial (CIRCA-1902) will enroll 12 patients to assess early signals of benefit on mortality and major morbidity in a high risk, high mortality population.
This study evaluates the feasibility of using thermal blankets to actively warm massively bleeding trauma patients at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. It is hypothesized that either full thermal blankets or half thermal blankets will be a feasible intervention to implement for the care of massively bleeding trauma patients.
The study will evaluate the effect of coadministration of a range of doses of DGAT2i with 1 dose of ACCi, on hepatic steatosis and the ability of DGAT2i to mitigate ACCi-induced elevations in serum triglycerides. The study has a 2-part design with sequential conduct of Part 1 and Part 2 with each part conducted in distinct/separate cohorts of participants. The overall study design, objectives/endpoints, eligibility criteria for both parts is envisioned to be identical, however, data from Part 1 will be used to determine whether to conduct Part 2.

An online survey will be sent to healthcare workers (HCWs) in acute care hospitals to explore a variety of risk factors for negative psychological outcomes and levels of anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress symptoms using validated scales. It is important to understand the sources of negative psychological impact on HCWs during this COVID-19 pandemic before hospitals and organizations can address and develop support programs to mitigate the stresses experienced by healthcare workers. Addressing and supporting the needs of our HCWs will be paramount in this COVID-19 pandemic and future outbreaks.
A Phase 2a, multicenter, 4-part, randomized, double-blind, dose-ranging, placebo-controlled study to evaluate the safety, tolerability, and PK of once-daily treatment with PLN-74809 in participants with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
The frequent consumption of pulses is associated with multiple cardiometabolic benefits in adults including a lower risk for overweight and obesity. However, it remains unclear whether these effects are mediated through the short-term mechanisms, including enhanced satiety and reduced food intake (FI), or through the long-term metabolic effects triggered by regular consumption of pulses. The objective of this study is to investigate the short-term effect of cooked pulses served in the amount similar to their recommended serving of 175ml (3/4 cup) on food intake in 12-14y children, and gastrointestinal comfort over 2-hours. The secondary objective is to evaluate how children perceive the sensory characteristics of the meals made with the whole pulses.
Canada's Food Guide (2007) recommended 7-10 servings of fruits and vegetables per day for a normal adult population. Although fruit juice (125 ml) is considered as one serving of fruits, the consumption of some fruit juices may be limited due to their high amount of sugar. The consumption of sugary drinks can lead to a rapid rise in postprandial glycaemia. Wild blueberries, due to their high level of anthocyanins, may provide multiple health benefits including improved blood glucose control, however, the consumption of fresh berries is limited by their short seasonal availability. Hydro-Thermodynamic (HTD) processing of blueberries allows the processing of whole berries including their skin and seeds into a beverage with the amount of anthocyanins comparable with fresh berries. The objective of the study is to investigate the effect of HTD-processed blueberries on postprandial glycaemia and antioxidant activity.
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a joint disorder caused by wear and tear on the joint over time; as a result, the protective cartilage of the bone in the joint gradually wears down. The lifetime risk of developing OA in the knee, with symptoms such as pain, aching, and stiffness, is 40% in men and 47% in women. It is estimated that approximately 19% of Americans aged 45 and older are affected by knee OA. Knee OA accounts for 83% of the global burden caused by all OA types. Pain and stiffness in knees, a large weight-bearing joint, often leads to disability, which interferes with daily life activities and demands expensive medical treatments or care.
