Comparative Study of Laparoscopic Versus Open Operations for Colon Cancer

The purpose of this study is to compare the short and long term outcomes of people who have colon cancers removed either by laparotomy (a large cut in the abdominal wall) or by a laparoscopic assisted approach (keyhole surgery). This study involves 37 credentialled surgeons in 20 approved hospitals across Australasia and during the recruitment period (Jan 1998 to March 2005) 601 patients were recruited into the ALCCaS Trial.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation in Interstitial Lung Disease

Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is a highly disabling group of conditions including idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), acute and chronic interstitial pneumonias, connective tissue diseases and sarcoidosis. People with ILD frequently experience breathlessness on exertion, which limits their ability to undertake daily activities. People with ILD report very poor quality of life due to low levels of physical functioning and vitality, and high levels of breathlessness and fatigue. There are few treatments for ILD and those that are available have limited impact on quality of life. The aim of this study is to assess the effects of Pulmonary Rehabilitation, which consists of specialised exercise training for people with lung disease, on exercise capacity and quality of life in people with ILD. We hypothesis that exercise training will result in reduced dyspnoea, improved exercise tolerance and enhanced quality of life.

Tai Chi or Hydrotherapy for People With Osteoarthritis of the Hip(s) or Knee(s)

The aim of this study is to determine, in the framework of a randomized controlled clinical trial, whether Tai Chi can affect measurable improvements in self-reported outcomes such as pain, physical function and psychological well-being in people with osteoarthritis (OA) mainly affecting the hips or knees. The effectiveness of Tai Chi will be compared with both a non-intervention control group as well as with a formal exercise program, hydrotherapy. Hydrotherapy has long been considered an effective intervention for people with chronic OA although scientific evidence is weak at present. The main study hypotheses are that Tai Chi or hydrotherapy can significantly decrease pain and physical limitations; improve health-related quality of life; and promote psychological well being in patients with OA of the hip(s) or knee(s); and that Tai Chi and hydrotherapy are of equal efficacy.
