Stereotactic Image-Guided Navigation During Breast Reconstruction in Patients With Breast Cancer

Many hospitals, including the Ohio State University Medical Center, will take pictures of the blood vessels in a patient's abdomen before they decide to perform a breast reconstruction using the patient's own tissue. These pictures are called computed tomography (CT) angiograms and are like a map of each patient's anatomy. However, no study has been reported that determined how accurate these pictures are at showing the surgeon where all of the blood vessels were located. This study will try to determine if these pictures are missing any blood vessels that are found during surgery and if the pictures show the correct location of the vessels

Entolimod in Treating Patients With Stage III-IV Squamous Cell Head and Neck Cancer Receiving Cisplatin and Radiation Therapy

This phase I trial studies the side effects and best dose of entolimod in treating patients with stage III-IV or recurrent head and neck cancer. Biological therapies, such as entolimod, may stimulate the immune system in different ways and stop tumor cells from growing. Entolimod may also prevent side effects caused by chemotherapy with cisplatin and radiation therapy. Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to kill tumor cells. Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as cisplatin, work in different ways to stop the growth of cancer cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. Giving entolimod together with cisplatin and radiation therapy may kill more tumor cells

Photodynamic Therapy Using Temoporfin Before Surgery in Treating Patients With Recurrent Oral Cavity or Oropharyngeal Cancer

This pilot clinical trial studies photodynamic therapy using temoporfin before surgery in treating patients with recurrent oral cavity or oropharyngeal cancer. Photodynamic therapy uses a drug, such as temoporfin, that is absorbed by tumor cells. The drug becomes active when it is exposed to light. When the drug is active, tumor cells are killed. Giving photodynamic therapy using temoporfin before surgery may make the tumor smaller and reduce the amount of normal tissue that needs to be removed.

The Effect of Coffee on the Absorption of Thyroid Hormone in Patients With Thyroid Carcinoma

The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether taking thyroid hormone medication with beverages other than water, decreases absorption of the medication by the intestine. Specifically we are interested in whether coffee, coffee with milk, or black tea affects how thyroid medication is absorbed by the body. Previous studies have suggested that taking thyroid hormone with coffee may interfere with the ability to absorb thyroid medicine. Given that many patients take their thyroid medicine with beverages other than water, and specifically with coffee or tea, understanding whether and how much coffee or tea may decrease thyroid hormone absorption is important for clinical practice. This study will help determine the safest and most effective way for adults to take their thyroid medication and will guide medical practitioners in how to counsel their patients when they prescribe thyroid hormone.

Every patient with HCC (Hepato-Cellular Carcinoma) with main portal vein thrombosis will be screened for presence of large esophageal varices and will be randomized between non-selective beta blocker versus primary endoscopic variceal ligation. They will be followed to assess the rate of reduction of index bleed rate as well as survival difference between the groups.

Stereotactic Boost for Oropharyngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma

This research study is a Phase I clinical trial. Phase I clinical trials test the safety of an investigational intervention (in this case, the stereotactic radiation boost). Phase I studies also try to define the appropriate dose of the investigational intervention to use for further studies. "Investigational" means that the stereotactic radiation treatment is still being studied and that research doctors are trying to find out more about it. It also means that the FDA has not approved a stereotactic radiation boost for your type of cancer. In this research study, the investigators are looking for the highest dose of the stereotactic radiation boost that can be given safely. Because the stereotactic radiation boost is so precise, the investigators are testing whether it can be used to increase the dose to the primary tumor without significantly increasing the side effects you experience; the goal is to improve the likelihood of successfully treating the tumor.

Study of Metformin With Simvastatin for Men With Prostate Carcinoma

The purpose of this study is to find out whether the two drugs used in the study, metformin and simvastatin, can slow down the speed of rise of prostate specific antigen (PSA) or stop its rise or even bring the level down. Recently, scientists noticed that men who take metformin to treat their high blood sugar or simvastatin to treat their high cholesterol are less likely to develop prostate cancer. Also, scientists found that, when these drugs are used in preclinical studies, they can slow down the growth of the prostate cancer cells. This study will try to find out whether these drugs can actually slow down the growth of prostate cancer in men.
