Using Game-based Exercise to Improve Balance in Cancer Patients

Cancer patients with chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) have deficits in sensory and motor skills leading to inappropriate proprioceptive feedback, impaired postural control and high fall risk. This study will investigate the acceptability and effect of an interactive motor adaptation balance training program based on wearable sensors for improving balance in older cancer patients with CIPN. Cancer patients with confirmed CIPN will be recruited and will be randomized to either intervention (IG) or control (CG) group and followed for 6 months. The intervention group will take part in a 6-week balance training program twice per week in either their home or in clinic (based on subject preference) under the supervision of a qualified research staff member. This intervention includes interactive game-based balance training including repetitive weight shifting and virtual obstacle crossing tasks. Wearable sensors will provide real-time visual/auditory feedback from foot and ankle position and allowed perception of motor-errors during each motor-action. The control group will be instructed to complete a supervised foot and ankle exercise without using sensor technology. Changes in balance, gait, and physical activity, and number of falls will be compared pre- and post-intervention, as well as 3 and 6 month post intervention. Investigators hypothesize that patients receiving sensor-based exercise training will benefit more compared to group receiving conventional non-technology home-based training in terms of improving functional performance and reducing falls.

Emotional Freedom Techniques to Reduce Patient Reported Cognitive Complaints in Cancer Survivors

The aim of this study is to further validate the CDT as a screening tool for identifying elderly cancer patients in need of a more in-depth cognitive evaluation within comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) and to validate the pre-defined cut-off score of ≤ 4 according to the Freund scoring system. All geriatric patients that are diagnosed with cancer will be screened by the oncology clinical nurse specialists attached to the respective multi-disciplinary clinics with the VES-13 and G8 questionnaire. Patients that screen positive, will be offered referral to the multi-disciplinary onco-geriatric program where a member of the research team will implement a full geriatric evaluation under supervision of the medical oncologist and/or geriatrician who will then formulate recommendations and might suggest referral to other health care providers. Individual results and survival data of all the patients that have given their informed consent will be registered in a database.

Safety of Stool Transplant for Patients With Difficult to Treat C. Difficile Infection

The purpose of this study is to test the safety of FMT in patients with C. difficile and cancer. In previous other studies, FMT has been shown to cure C. difficile when antibiotics have failed, but most of these studies have not included patients with cancer. The investigators want to prove that FMT is safe in this group of people so that doctors will feel more comfortable prescribing it for their patients with cancer.

Wonders & Worries: A Clinical Trial of a Psychosocial Intervention for Children Who Have a Parent With Cancer

Parental cancer can cause substantial behavioral and emotional distress in both parent and child. Parents struggle with talking with their child about their cancer and supporting the child during treatment. Over 73% of patients with children desire information and services to support their children yet only 9% of these families report receiving this support. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the Wonders & Worries psychosocial intervention designed for children ages 5-14 who have a parent diagnosed with early stage cancer.This study is a randomized controlled clinical trial (RCT) evaluating the Wonders & Worries group and individual intervention for school age children (5 -14 years old) who have a parent with cancer. Families will be enrolled at the time of initial parent consultation, given informed consent, and then randomized either to the intervention group of 30 families or the wait-listed control group of 30 families. Both groups will be given a series of standardized validated assessment instruments including the Revised Children's Manifest Anxiety Scale (RCMAS), the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), and the Family Communication Scale FACES IV at baseline, post intervention, and 8 week follow up. Upon completion of the follow up measures, families in the wait-listed control group will be enrolled into the intervention. Parent exit interviews for both groups will be used to measure parent-reported child outcomes and program utility.
