The Effects of Standing Tutorials on Problem-Based Learning (PBL) Among Undergraduate Students

Problem-based learning (PBL) is an education model utilized by Maastricht University and many other universities worldwide. PBL occurs in small, collaborative tutorials, under the facilitation of a tutor. This study explores the effects of standing tutorials, compared against sitting tutorials, on PBL among undergraduate students. A quantitative approach will be taken to objectively measure students' learning, and a qualitative approach will be taken to obtain a deeper understanding of the processes of learning. It is hypothesized that students in the standing tutorials will be able to recall more academic concepts and link the concepts better than students in the sitting tutorials (H1). Audio-recording of the tutorials will be used to measure the discussions within the tutorials. The transcriptions obtained from the recording will be studied through text analysis. It is hypothesized that students in the standing tutorials will produce more discussions, and therefore a higher word count (H2). It is also hypothesized that the students in the standing tutorials will use more word categories that are conducive to the discussion and learning process (H3). Through the qualitative approach, the content of the transcriptions will be analysed through a thematic analysis. It is hypothesized that the students in the standing tutorials will produce more learning-oriented interactions (H4). Two additional factors that would be measured are subsequent physical activity and academic achievement. ActivPAL accelerometers will be used to measure the students' daily activity, to find out if the students' daily activities are affected by the standing tutorials, for example, students may sit more as a result of fatigue from the standing tutorials, or conversely transfer the active behaviour from the standing tutorials to other activities outside the tutorial group.It is hypothesized that standing tutorials do not affect the students' subsequent physical activity, and therefore there will be no significant differences of daily activity between students in the sitting and standing tutorials (H5). With regards to academic achievement, it is hypothesized that the students in the standing tutorials will have higher academic achievements after the course compared to the students in the sitting tutorials (H6).

Stress & Anxiety Dampening Effects of a Probiotic Supplement Compared to Placebo in Healthy Subjects

The aim of this study is to assess whether a 5 week intake of a probiotic (Lpc-37) can modulate stress and anxiety experienced by healthy subjects during and after an acute stressor compared to placebo. To measure stress and anxiety, markers of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activity and questionnaires will be assessed before, during and after the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST). The results of this study indicate if the chosen study design is suitable to discover stress-related effects of probiotics.

Optimizing Chronic Low Back Pain Exercise Therapies With Cerebral Electrical Stimulation

Chronic low back (CLBP) pain is an important public health and socioeconomic problem worldwide and, despite the volume of research in the area, it remains a difficult condition to treat. The Neuromatrix pain model and new findings on the pain chronification process point to a greater efficacy of treatments that address central and peripheral rather than only peripheral structures. Transcranial direct current (tDCS) stimulation is a noninvasive neuromodulation technique that has been presenting recent advances in the treatment of chronic pain. However, when applied alone the magnitude of its effect is small in chronic musculoskeletal conditions such as chronic non-specific back pain. One option that could optimize the analgesic effect of tDCS would be the combination with therapeutic exercises, which play a central role in spinal rehabilitation programs as well as higher levels of evidence. The combination of these treatments (tDCS and exercise) may present an analgesic effect superior to the isolated interventions. This study aims to investigate the efficacy of tDCS combined with therapeutic exercises in people CLBP for pain relief, affective aspect of pain, disability, kinesiophobia and global perception. Sixty patients will be randomized into two distinct groups to receive either tDCS (anodal) + therapeutic exercises or tDCS (sham) + therapeutic exercises for 12 sessions over a four-week period. The primary clinical outcome (pain relief) and secondary outcomes (disability, affective aspect of pain, kinesiophobia, and perception of overall effect) will be collected before treatment and four weeks, three months and six months post randomization. The data will be collected by a blind examiner to the treatment allocation.

Multimodal Analgesia With Acetaminophen vs. Narcotics Alone After Hip Arthroscopy

The purpose of this proposed study is to evaluate the efficacy of a multimodal approach to analgesia for patient's pain after hip arthroscopy and to also assess if this new approach will result in a reduction in post-operative narcotic use. This study is a single-center, randomized prospective study comparing post-operative pain scores and narcotic consumption between individuals receiving acetaminophen along with a reduced quantity of Percocet (to be used as needed for breakthrough pain) and individuals receiving Percocet only. Both pain management options are considered to be standard of care. Both cohorts will receive aspirin for DVT prophylaxis and celecoxib for heterotopic ossification prophylaxis. The primary objective of the study are to compare patients' narcotic consumption and reported pain following arthroscopic hip surgery, and determine if acetaminophen can provide adequate pain relief compared to a narcotic medication.
