Cognitive Enhancement Through Computerized Training

Alcohol use disorder is characterized by widespread neurocognitive impairments, however despite substantial advances in the intervention and treatment of alcohol use disorders, exceptionally few studies have been directed to improving these deficits. This project leverages computerized cognitive training, applied as an adjunct to inpatient treatment, to enhance neurocognitive recovery. This project informs public health and future intervention efforts by interrogating factors critical to intervention efficacy and clarifying relationships between neurocognitive recovery and treatment outcomes, including post-discharge alcohol consumption.

Counteracting misinformation on childhood vaccines remains a priority for public health in industrialized countries. Previous research showed that misinformation-induced vaccine hesitancy particularly concerns very highly or very lowly educated parents, and, especially in Europe, specific groups of immigrants. Misinformation framing directly targets specific sub-population of parents by exploiting different cognitive biases, and specific concerns based on cultural norms: this project aims at testing the effectiveness of similar framing techniques applied to positive information on the HPV vaccine by conducting a Randomized Controlled Trial in Stockholm, Sweden. It randomizes emotionally and scientifically/statistically framed information addressing the specific concerns reported by previous literature.

GreenBladder - Early Detection of Bladder Cancer in Residents in Greenland Using a Urinary Marker and a Mobile Cystoscopy Unit

The goal of this observational study is to evaluate whether a urinary biomarker (Xpert® Bladder Cancer Detection Test) can be used as a selection tool to decide which patients that should undergo cystoscopy in haematuria work-up or in other indications where bladder tumor is suspected. Hereby, the investigators will investigate in which patients where cystoscopy can be omitted, particularly in areas with limited access to urological service. With these more selected investigations, patients with bladder tumors will potentially be selected to earlier diagnosis compared to the current non-selected investigations with the inherent logistic and economical challenges. With this strategy, the investigators aim at improving the current poor prognosis for bladder cancer patients in Greenland.

VR Augmented Human Delivered Integrative Psychotherapy for Colonoscopy Procedural Anxiety and Pain

Colonoscopy is an invaluable tool for the diagnosis and management of colon diseases, especially colorectal cancer (CRC) - the third most common cancer worldwide. Its unmatched ability to detect CRC and premalignant growths makes it the gold standard; however, it is not without its challenges. Patients often experience pre-procedure anxiety and discomfort primarily related to anticipated pain, which negatively impacts both the procedure and its outcomes. Colonoscopy procedural anxiety not only exacerbates the experience of pain, but also may compromise the quality of bowel preparation, augment procedure and recovery room times, and increase the use of sedation, particularly among females, who report greater pre-procedural anxiety, and perceive the procedure to be more painful and harder to endure. This underscores the importance of interventions aimed at mitigating anxiety to improve patient experience and adherence to colonoscopy procedures. The profound positive corelation between anxiety and pain impact on outcomes of colonoscopy warrants an investigation of comprehensive patient care strategies. A growing body of evidence indicates that non-pharmacologic interventions, such as music therapy and immersive virtual reality (iVR), may effectively reduce anxiety, pain, and enhance overall patient satisfaction. Understanding barriers to colonoscopy compliance, such as fear of cancer diagnosis, the perception of invasiveness, and feelings of embarrassment is paramount to enhancing CRC screening uptake, therefore lowering mortality.

Genetic Diagnosis in Inborn Errors of Metabolism

Inborn Errors of metabolism comprise a large number of rare conditions with a collective incidence of around 1/2000 newborns. Many disorders are treatable provided that a correct diagnosis can be established in time, and for many diseases novel therapies are being developed. Without treatment, many of the conditions result in early death or severe irreversible handicaps. The Centre for Inherited Metabolic Diseases, CMMS at Karolinska university hospital, is an integrated expert center where clinical specialists work closely together with experts in laboratory medicine, combining clinical genetics, clinical chemistry, pediatrics, neurology, and endocrinology. The center serves the whole Swedish population with diagnostics and expert advice on IEM and has a broad arsenal of biochemical investigations designed to detect defects in intermediary metabolism.
