Study to Evaluate Darbepoetin Alfa in Pediatric Subjects With Anemia Due to Chronic Kidney Disease

The purpose of this study is to find out more about darbepoetin alfa in children less than 1 year of age with anemia (a decrease in red blood cells) due to kidney failure. This study will see if darbepoetin alfa is safe and well tolerated and whether it causes any side effects by taking blood samples and checking vital signs (heart rate, body temperature, and blood pressure tests) at specific times throughout the study. In addition, the study will evaluate the amount of darbepoetin alfa in the blood over time and look at special markers in the blood to evaluate how darbepoetin alfa works on anemia. Darbepoetin alfa is approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and European Medicines Agency (EMA) for use in adults, but not for all ages of pediatric subjects. Therefore, studies need to be conducted in pediatric subjects (children) to determine the appropriate dose to use in younger children.

Novel Testing Procedures

The purpose of this study is to evaluate a novel screening test to detect patients with primary immunodeficiencies(PIDs). The investigators plan to use information gained from this study in order to advance the field of clinical immunology, thus improving the diagnosis, treatment, and well-being of future patients. The purpose of this study is to determine if this screening test is able to detect patients with immune problems, and the investigators will test patients with known PIDs to determine if the test is accurate The investigators hypothesize that detecting serum immunoglobulins from dried blood spots will be effective in detecting patients with known primary immunodeficiencies. If our hypothesis is confirmed, it opens the possibility of using point of care testing to screen for primary immune deficiencies. Age of study subjects will range from 1 year to 80 years of age, and will be recruited form the Immunodeficiency clinic at the Medical College of Wisconsin/Children's Hospital of Wisconsin (MCW/CHW). Any subject having testing done to evaluate the immune system is eligible for this study. This will include patients with known PIDs as well as patients evaluated for a suspected immunodeficiency. It is anticipated that 150 subjects will be analyzed over a two year period.

This is a multicenter, prospective, randomized, double-blind, triple-dummy, parallel group, comparative, study designed to evaluate the efficacy of Ibuprofen (IBU) 200 mg/ Phenylephrine (PE) 10 mg and IBU 200 mg/ PE 10 mg/ Chlorpheniramine (CHLOR) 4 mg on the relief of symptoms of the common cold and flu. The reference product that the active treatments will be compared to is paracetamol (PARA) 500 mg.

Recurrences After Surgery for Deep Endometriosis Depending on the Involvement of the Surgical Margins in the Specimen

The recurrence of endometriosis after surgery a formidable challenge for the gynecologist. Recurrence rates reported in the literature are very high, being 21.5% at 2 years and 40-50% at 5 years. Several theories attempt to explain these high figures. The three most widely accepted are: - The presence of residual endometriotic tissue or residual endometriotic cells not completely eradicated during surgery - The growth of undetected microscopic endometriosis during surgery - The development of endometriotic lesions de novo Patients with symptomatic endometriosis diagnosed by ultrasound or MRI and suitable for surgery will participate in the study. The surgical specimens sent for pathology from bladder, vagina, uterosacral, sigma or rectum will be properly marked for studying the presence of endometriosis.

There is an urgent need to develop hand transplant programs in this country. To this end, the University of Michigan Hospital and Health Systems is developing such an interdisciplinary program. The Transplant Center would like to track the patient experience from pre-operative care through surgery and post-operative care. Detailed information will be collected from the patient medical records, including: Pre-operative screening, demographics, medications; Surgical information ; Post-operative inpatient and out-patient care; laboratory and other test results; physical assessments, psychological assessments and quality of life assessments.
