Currently, the effect of exercise on metastatic breast cancer has not been extensively studied, even though the benefits are evident in the curative setting. The investigators designed the EFFECT study to assess the effects of a 9-month structured and individualised exercise intervention in 350 patients with metastatic breast cancer (stage IV) on cancer-related physical fatigue, Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL), and other disease and treatment-related side effects at six months (primary endpoint).

Resistance to treatment is one of the major themes in cancer research. Despite this, the definition and clinical implications of resistance to treatment remain under-explored, and patient-physician communication in this context still constitutes a challenge. When resistance to cancer treatments occurs, physicians not only have to explain to the patient the phenomenon of resistance, often based on complex results (biological results, genomic tests, imaging, etc.), but also need to offer alternative therapies, whilst fostering shared medical decision-making. These different tasks are particularly challenging for clinicians, especially since there are large individual differences at patient level. Indeed, each patient has his or her own unique information needs, capacity for understanding, and level of desire to participate in treatment decisions.

Testing the Addition of Radium Therapy (Radium-223 Dichloride) to the Usual Chemotherapy Treatment (Paclitaxel) for Advanced Breast Cancer That Has Spread to the Bones

This phase II trial studies how well radium-223 dichloride and paclitaxel work in treating patients with advanced breast cancer that has spread to the bones. Radium-223 dichloride is a radioactive drug that behaves in a similar way to calcium and collects in cancer that has spread to the bones (bone metastases). The radioactive particles in radium-223 dichloride act on bone metastases, killing the tumor cells and reducing the pain that they can cause. Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as paclitaxel, work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells, by stopping them from dividing, or by stopping them from spreading. Giving radium-223 dichloride and paclitaxel may work better in treating patients with metastatic breast cancer compared to paclitaxel alone.

This trial studies how well a text-based intervention works in improving adherence to hormone therapy in patients with stage I-III hormone receptor positive breast cancer. Women often require long term therapy with adjuvant hormone therapy to prevent the cancer from returning and to improve overall survival. Side effects from hormone therapy may prevent some women from staying adherent to their medication therapy. A text-based intervention may provide educational information to breast cancer patients who are undergoing adjuvant hormone therapy.
