Comparing Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy Versus Mindfulness-Based Therapy for Autistic Adults

Autistic adults are at a greater risk for mental health problems compared to the general population, with 50% meeting criteria for a co-occurring psychiatric condition. Depression and anxiety are the most common of these conditions among autistic adults, contributing to long-term detrimental effects on health, day-to-day functioning, and quality of life. This study will conduct the first large-scale head-to-head comparison of the two most widely studied mental health interventions for autistic adults: cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and mindfulness-based therapy (MBT). Both interventions are well-established, empirically supported treatments for depression and anxiety in the general population, and both interventions have demonstrated efficacy among autistic adults. However, their comparative effectiveness and heterogeneity of treatment effects have not been established in autistic adults. Both interventions will be delivered by telehealth.

EEG Microstates Across At-Risk Mental States

The goal of this observational study is to compare subjects with at-risk-mental-state, early psychosis, schizophrenia, depression, and autism spectrum disorders, with healthy controls (N = 21 x 6). The main questions it aims to answer are: - are EEG microstate anomalies associated with diagnosis, clinical and functional prognosis, both in resting conditions and during sleep ? - are EEG microstates anomalies associated with differences in sensorimotor integration, prosodic and conversational, interoceptive, and narrative self ? - an ancillary study will be to see whether in healthy controls EEG microstate properties vary under light hypnosis conditions. Participants will: - undergo deep phenotyping based on psychopathology and neuropsychological assessments - undergo a high-resolution EEG (64 electrodes) with a resting period and a sensorimotor task; and healthy controls will have a light hypnosis period. - undergo a recording of the characteristics of their voice (tone, prosody) - undergo a one-night polysomnography - undergo MRI and biological sampling for multi-omic analyses - undergo a virtual reality experience

Animal-assisted Resilience Training for Children With Stressful Life Events or Autism Spectrum Disorder

The goal of this clinical trial is to learn about the effects of an animal-assisted resilience training in children who experienced stressful life events or who have a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder. The main question it aims to answer is: • Is an animal-assisted resilience training a feasible approach to increase resilience in children with a history of stressful life events or a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder? Participants will take part in 12 training sessions of a standardized resilience training. The training is group-based, takes place outdoors, and includes interactions with different animals. It focuses on self-esteem, self-perception, dealing with emotions, and social competence.

Use of MRI and cTBS for Catatonia in Autism

Despite the significant morbidity and mortality associated with catatonia in autism, no diagnostic research has attempted to identify biomarkers for catatonia. This application will use a participant's own individual brain magnetic resonance image to target the primary motor strip with transcranial magnetic stimulation; to determine if hyper-excitability of the brain directly correlates with symptoms of catatonia and social-emotional impairment in autism. Completion of this project would result in the first study to associate hyper-excitability of the brain with catatonia and core features of autism; findings which are likely to have a significant impact on the health and well-being of autistic individuals.

Intelligent Robotic Interactions for Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders

For several years, studies have been developed on the contribution of social robots as a tool for interventions for children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). One of the recommended intervention models is the ESDM (Early Start Denver Model). It consists of setting up an individualized, intensive program (at least 20 hours per week) through the pleasure of play. The teacher follows the motivation and interests of the child, and it is the child who chooses the activities. Studies published in recent years tend to show that robots bring benefits to ASD children, particularly in the treatment of social interactions and in clinical settings. However, there is no scientific consensus on the generalized contribution and effect over time of these interventions. Moreover, a robotic solution controlled by a practitioner through a telepresence system allows for a better adaptability to the responses and desires of the children during the interventions. The investigators believe that such a solution would allow for better assessment of progress in the core skills of expressive communication and imitation and greater engagement during interventions.

Psychometric Validation of the Camouflaging Autistic Traits Questionnaire

For many affected individuals, despite impairment and distress, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is recognized and diagnosed late, in school age, adolescence, or even in adulthood, which could be due, among other things, to the use of compensatory strategies such as so-called "camouflaging" by the respective individual. In order to better investigate and quantify these adaptive and compensatory strategies of individuals with autism, the Camouflaging Autistic Traits Questionnaire (CAT-Q) has recently been developed and validated in the English-speaking world. The CAT-Q is designed to assess the extent of camouflaging behavior, in which autistic individuals consciously or unconsciously attempt to conceal or attenuate their autistic traits in order to better adapt to social situations. So far, however, there is no German-language questionnaire that can be used to validly assess camouflaging. The aim of the planned research project is to psychometrically validate the CAT-Q in German-speaking adolescents aged 14-21 years. The validation of the CAT-Q represents an important basis for further research on the construct camouflaging and can subsequently contribute to an improvement of diagnostics as well as support the development of individual treatment approaches.
