Filter by:Cardiovascular disease (disease of the heart and blood vessels) is one of the leading causes of death in Canada. It also carries a financial burden on the Canadian economy with a yearly cost close to $21 billion divided between loss of productivity and healthcare costs. The majority of cardiovascular disease cases (90%) are caused by factors that can be controlled and modified. These factors include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes (high blood sugar), tobacco smoking, unhealthy diet, obesity, physical inactivity and high alcohol consumption. Such factors are very common and not very well controlled and so individuals who have any of these factors would be at risk of having cardiovascular disease. As such controlling these factors will reduce the risk of having cardiovascular disease and improve the individuals' quality of life. Pharmacists frequently work with patients and their family doctor to provide cardiovascular care. Having a pharmacist involved in cardiovascular care may help patients with cardiovascular disease or at risk of having the disease because they are more accessible and may have more opportunities to educate people about cardiovascular medications. This might lead to better prevention and control of cardiovascular disease. Purpose: The research study will assess if a community pharmacy cardiovascular risk reduction intervention can help reduce cardiovascular risk. Procedure: If the individual has an elevated blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, waist circumference or body weight or is physically inactive, have an unhealthy diet, a smoker or taking medications for any of the previously mentioned conditions, the pharmacist will assess the cardiovascular disease risk [risk of having a cardiovascular event (e.g. heart attack or a stroke)] using a computer program. If the individual is at high risk s/he will be asked to take part in the study. If the individual agrees to take part in the study s/he will be randomly assigned to either the Usual Care Group or the Advanced Care Group. All participants have an equal chance of being assigned to either group. If assigned to the Usual Care Group, the individual will receive the care and services that would normally be provided by the pharmacist. At 3 months, the pharmacist will see the individual who will be offered the Advanced Care at that time. If assigned to the to Advanced Care Group, the individual will be asked to meet with the pharmacist every 3-4 weeks over a 3 month period. During these meetings, the pharmacist will conduct an assessment that may include blood pressure, waist circumference, height and weight measurements and talk to the individual about their cardiovascular risk and medications. The individual and the pharmacist will come up with a plan for how to try to lower his/her cardiovascular risk. The pharmacist will discuss this plan with their family doctor. The individual will be asked to conduct some laboratory tests before the 3 months visit; these tests may include HbA1c (a blood test to measure blood sugar control over the last 3 months) and cholesterol to assess the effect of the intervention on cardiovascular risk.
- Vascular Inflammation is a key factor in both the pathogenesis and outcome of atherosclerosis. 18FDG-PET is a promising novel tool for identifying and quantifying vascular inflammation within atherosclerotic plaque - Recently, unique subsets of obese individuals, such as metabolically obese but normal weight (MONW) and metabolically healthy obese (MHO), have been getting an attention - Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the relationship of vascular inflammation, measured by FDG-PET, with various body sized phenotypes
Administration of vitamin D will have a beneficial effect on postprandial leukocyte activation, oxidative stress and arterial stiffness in vitamin D deficient females. High doses of vitamin D may have a more pronounced effect than low doses.
- Vascular inflammation is a key factor in both the pathogenesis and outcome of atherosclerosis. 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) is a promising tool for identifying and quantifying vascular inflammation within atherosclerotic plaques. - Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is closely associated with many cardiometabolic risk factors. NAFLD can be detected by measuring liver fat accumulation using computed tomography (CT). - Also epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) volume as determined by computed tomography (CT) is an independent marker of cardiovascular events in the general population. - Therefore, the purpose of this investigators study is to compare the NAFLD severity and EAT volume with FDG uptake measured by PET/CT.
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of pre-procedural single high loading dose (40 mg) of rosuvastatin on the primary end-points of all cause mortality and composite of death or myocardial infarction from cardiovascular (CV) causes, target vessel revascularization (TVR), or stroke.
The research objectives of this project are as follows: 1. Obtain high-quality human atherosclerotic arterial samples from diseased donors. 2. Perform biochemical analysis to determine the abundance, localization and activity of Dicer and double-stranded RNAs in these diseased tissues.
Randomized placebo-controlled study with vitamine K2 (Menaquinone-4) in calcified carotid stenosis. We evaluate the plaque remodelling after administration of vitamine, reducing the calcified component.
1. (RENEWAL-EXERCISE trial) The investigators hypothesize that the increased sympathetic nervous system activation that is associated with resistant hypertension is a major contributor in the pathogenesis of exercise diastolic dysfunction and that modulation of the sympathetic nervous system activity with radiofrequency ablation of the renal artery sympathetic nerve fibers delivered via a treatment catheter, will have a significant effect on the diastolic function that is beyond BP-lowering effect. 2. (RENEWAL-REGRESSION trial) The major cause of mortality and morbidity in hypertension is atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. the significant decrease in the sympathetic nervous system activation after renal sympathetic denervation will contribute to regression over and beyond it's effect of blood pressure reduction. 3. (RENEWAL-PREDICT trial) No data exists regarding the tests or methods predicting the successful renal denervation causing the effective reduction of BP. For these, the investigators sought to perform the new tests such as adenosine infusion test during procedure and skin sympathetic activity measurement before and immediate post-procedure (detailed explanation provided in section of Methods) and then evaluate the association between these tests and reduction of BP following procedures.
The primary objective is to determine Lp-PLA2 activity in atherosclerotic carotid plaques after 14 (+/-4) days treatment with darapladib, compared to placebo. Secondary objectives include determination of the change in Lp-PLA2 activity in blood, Lp-PLA2 mass in blood and plaque, specified biomarkers in blood and plaque and their respective correlation's with Lp-PLA2. In addition, the study aims to characterise the PK/PD of repeat oral doses of SB-480848, and safety and tolerability in this population.
The aim of this study is to determine whether high high density lipoprotein-cholesterol(HDL-C) level and low Cholesteryl Ester Transfer Protein(CETP) activity is atherogenic or not in subjects who received health checkups. We investigate the association between CETP activities and the severity of atherosclerosis assessed by intima-media thickness (IMT) and compare the atherogenic change between in subjects with high HDL-C level, low HDL-C level, high CETP activities and low CETP activities by examining the morbidity rate of atherogenic diseases, the rate of ischemic electrocardiography(ECG) change, Calc Score of artery from chest X-ray, Ankle Brachial Index/Pulse Wave Velocity and various serum atherogenic markers. And we also examine the correlation between normal lipid profile and concentration, activity and function of surface lipoprotein in subjects with variety of lipoprotein levels, including patients with hyper-LDL-cholesterolemia, hyper-HDL-cholesterolemia with low or no CETP activity, patients with high level of remnant cholesterol or hyperlipoproteinemia of apolipoprotein(Apo)B-48.
