Using Hypnosis and Virtual Reality During Pre and Postoperative Cardiovascular Surgery.

Nowadays, the use of cognitive behavioral therapies has become quite common in the clinical care. Different non-pharmacological techniques, including hypnosis and virtual reality are currently used as complementary tools in the treatment of acute and chronic pain (Pourmand et al., 2017; Vanhaudenhuyse et al., 2009). A new technique called 'virtual reality hypnosis' (VRH) (Patterson et al., 2004), which encompasses a combination of both tools, is regularly used although its actual function remains unknown to this date. With the goal to improve our understanding of VRH combination effects, it is necessary to elaborate randomized and controlled research studies in order to understand their actual function in individual's perception. 100 patients who are undergoing a cardiovascular surgery at the Liège University Hospital will be randomly assigned to four conditions (control, hypnosis, VR and VRH). Each participant will receive two sessions of one of the techniques: one the day before the surgery and one other session the day after, in intensive care units. Physiological parameters will be taken and participants will fill in a questionnaire which evaluates their level of perceived immersion, their level of anxiety, fatigue, pain and relaxation. A short interview will also be conducted to give participants the opportunity to openly describe their experience. This study will help to expand the knowledge regarding the influence of these techniques on patient's cognition, perception and sensation .

GASA-CIR Trail (Guidance and the Symptoms of Acute Stress and Anxiety in Critically Ill Patients Relatives in Intensive Care Unit)

A randomized clinical trial 1:1 among relatives of patients admitted to an intensive care unit, the intervention group will be composed by family members who receive a printed brochure and will be encouraged to visit a website detailed information and plain language about the ICU environment and the critically ill patient characteristics. The primary outcome will be the impact of orientations on symptoms of post-traumatic stress, assessed by the IES-R scale. Secondary outcome measures will include symptoms of anxiety and depression at the end of 7 days and after 3 months of follow-up by the HADS scales, the degree of satisfaction of the relatives, through the FS-ICU scale, as well as the association of resilience, through the CD-RISC scale, with the symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Does a Phone-based Meditation Application Improve Mental Wellness in Emergency Medicine Personnel?

Emergency medicine is notorious for its high rate of burnout and mental health issues. The emergency department (ED) is a high paced work environment dealing with life and death issues. Employees in the ED work shift times that are not conducive to a natural circadian rhythm. All of these factors lead to high rates of burnout and overall dissatisfaction with their career choice. These are known downsides of a career in emergency medicine, but little effort is put into addressing this issue in everyday EDs. Cell phones offer an easy and convenient means to participate in meditation. There are multiple evidence-based meditation apps available to cell phone users free of charge. Meditation has been shown to decrease burnout, rates of depression, and rates of anxiety. We hypothesize that weekly use of a meditation-based cell phone application will improve the mental health of emergency department employees as measured on various wellness inventories.

Canine-Assisted Anxiety Reduction In Emergency Care

Compare the effect of a single exposure to a therapy dog and handler within the pediatric emergency department patient with anxiety by measuring the change in patient perception of anxiety before and after dog exposure using the FACES scale. Guided Self-help for Anxiety - a Patient Preference Trial

Supporting patients in exerting choice over their treatment is a central aspect of modern healthcare. In Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) services, then patients treated at step 2 are only and always offered cognitive-behaviourally informed guided self-help (GSH), when they are deemed suitable for treatment at step 2 of IAPT services (termed CBT-GSH). Step 2 interventions are guided self-help (GSH) delivered by Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners (PWPs). Recently, a new type of GSH has been developed and found to be feasible and effective in IAPT services - this is called cognitive-analytic guided self-help (CAT-GSH). This research aims to test the efficacy of CAT-GSH by comparing outcomes over time achieved in both types of GSH and interviewing participants about their experience of the GSH. The methodology to support patient choice is a patient preference trial. In this method, then patients that meet inclusion criteria for the trial are offered and choose between either CAT-GSH and CBT-GSH. Those patients that are unconcerned with the type of treatment are randomised to either CAT-GSH or CBT-GSH. The primary outcome measure is the Beck Anxiety Inventory. No changes to the standard practice of the PWPs will occur during the trial, the trial will be situated in a standard IAPT service and be a therefore conducted in a routine practice setting.

This mixed methods study proposes a culturally adapted cognitive behavioural therapy (CA-CBT) model for an East Asian demographic in Canada. The client population of East Asian youth who have been diagnosed with anxiety and/or depression are the focus of the study. CBT has been proven as a very effective form of therapy, and when adapted can promote positive mental health outcomes for a growing and increasingly vulnerable population. Developing a culturally adapted version of CBT (CA-CBT) for this population adds a practical treatment that improves access to culturally relevant care.

The China Longitudinal Aging Study of Cognitive Impairment

Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Vascular dementia (VaD) have become common diseases in the elderly. The burden of dementia is rising in China, with major medical, social and economic impacts. To address this important public health problem, cohort study on elderly cognitive disorders should be carry out. The methods of early prevention, early diagnosis and early treatment the cognitive disorders in elderly should be found to reduce the burden of the social and economic issue due to dementia. At present, the international corresponding guidelines have taken gene and brain imaging biomarkers as important indicators of dementia pathogenesis research, accurate diagnosis and targeted intervention. Based on the above understanding, the study carry out the population cohort study based on accurate diagnosis and construct the high standard information and sample bank. The study will establish the standard and quality system of geriatric cognitive disorders cohort study (unified standards and norms). The study will integrate the standard biological samples stratified acquisition function module (homogeneity and precision) of elderly cognitive disorders, and complete the construction of biological samples bank and clinical diagnosis and treatment information database. The study will apply and develop brain structural and pathological imaging technology to support precision diagnosis of senile cognitive disorders. The study will evaluate whether peripheral nerve degeneration can predict central nervous system degeneration based on the large cohort of elderly study. In addition, The study will make an effective supplement the sample bank construction of Shanghai Mental Health Center.

The Effect of Preferred Music on EMG Anxiety and Pain

Patients often report anxiety and pain related to electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCS) which are tests used to look for diseases of the nerves and muscles. Unfortunately, for those with very high levels of test related stress, the experience may be very frightening and may impede completion of the study and negatively impact on making a timely and accurate diagnosis. Several studies have shown that music can improve anxiety and pain levels in various situations and procedures. Our study will allow participants to play music of their choice during EMG and NCS in order to determine if the pain and anxiety that they experience is reduced.

Information regarding the likely progress of post-stroke symptoms is vitally important to stroke survivors to allow them to plan for the future and to adjust to life after stroke. Moreover, the prevalence of morbidity secondary to stroke is of central importance to Health Professionals to understand the prognosis of the disease in the patients under their care. Additionally, it will also allow commissioners of care, planners and third sector organisations to adapt to and answer the needs of a post-stroke population. Currently, the data collected by national audit programmes are concentrated on what can be termed 'process or process of care' data. The utility of these data are in the ability to audit the care received by stroke survivors on stroke units against evidenced standards for care, thus ensuring evidence based practice. Nevertheless, process of care is only one form of measuring stroke unit care and the audit programmes collect some limited functional status data, data relating to risk-factor co-morbidities and treatment received data. Therefore, the scope of this study is to build on the minimum data set currently collected and to collect post-stroke data in domains not currently collected. The International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM) takes important steps to collect data outside of process of care data such as a Patient Reported outcome data in their minimum outcome data set for stroke [currently under review].. Nevertheless, the ICHOM doesn't currently advocate the specific collection of data relating to cognitive impairment or emotional problems secondary to stroke. It is in these important aspects that this study will augment the data set currently advocated by ICHOM to collect data in the areas of cognitive impairment and emotional problems secondary to stroke. Therefore, the aim of this study is to quantify the prevalence of morbidity at six months post-stroke.

Assessment of the Aromatherapy to Alleviate Peri Operative Anxiety in Ambulatory Elective Upper Limb Surgery Under Loco-regional Anesthesia

AROMA study is a randomised controlled parallel-group single-site study. Patients randomized in the experimental group benefit from the aromatherapy at their arrival in the operating theatre in the recovery room. 2 drops of essential oils are applied on a compress placed next to the head of the patient. This compress is kept until the patient is leaving the operating theatre. Patients randomized in the control group don't benefit from the aromatherapy. The anxiety evolution is measured in both groups with the Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale (APAIS). The hypothesis is that aromatherapy alleviate peri operative anxiety during an ambulatory elective upper limb surgery under loco-regional anesthesia.
