Filter by:This investigation is designed to be a two-arm, non-randomized prospective phase 2 study evaluating the impact of medical physicist patient intervention on the anxiety level and patient satisfaction of patients undergoing a course of radiation therapy. The goal is to demonstrate that these interventions will have a significantly positive impact on the overall well-being of the oncology patients.
Since December 2019 the world has been shaken with an enormous global threat: the Covid-19 pandemic. This new kind of coronavirus is generating an unprecedented impact both on the general population and on the healthcare systems in most countries. Health services are trying to expand their capacity to respond to the pandemic, taking actions such as increasing the number of beds; acquiring necessary equipment to provide intensive therapy (ventilators), and calling retired health professionals and health students so they can assist the overwhelmed health care workforce. Unfortunately, these organizational changes at health facilities, along with the fears and concerns of becoming ill with the virus or infecting their families, put an enormous emotional burden on workers in health services which may lead to negative outcomes on mental health in this population. Recent cross-sectional studies in China indicate that health service workers exposed to people with Covid-19 reported higher rates of depressive and anxious symptoms. This negative impact on mental health among health workers in China has also been informally reported in other countries where the Covid-19 pandemic has been devastating in its effects (such as Spain and Italy), as well as in countries where the pandemic is becoming a growing public health problem. This is particularly relevant in regions with fewer resources (Latin America, North Africa), where there are limited means and the response from the health system is usually insufficient. Moreover, it is necessary to study these negative effects longitudinally considering that some effects will appear over time (post-traumatic stress). The COVID-19 HEalth caRe wOrkErS (HEROES) study is a large, bottom-up, South-North initiative aimed to evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of health care workers (HCWs). HEROES encompasses a wide variety of academic institutions in 19 LMICs and 8 HICs, in partnership with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and with support from the World Health Organization (WHO). The HEROES study is led by Dr. Rubén Alvarado at University of Chile, and Dr. Ezra Susser and Franco Mascayano at Columbia U Mailman School of Public Health.
Background: There is limited knowledge on the psychological implications of COVID-19 among hospitalized patients and their close relatives. Moreover, evidence-based psychological interventions targeting hospitalized COVID-19 patients and their relatives are currently lacking. Objective: To test a minimal psychoeducational intervention versus standard of care for reducing anxiety among hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Methods and analysis: The trial is a Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) with a 1 month and 3 month follow-up. Hospitalized COVID-19 patients are consecutively included at admission and randomized 1:1 to either an intervention or control group. Patients randomized to the intervention group will receive a minimal psychoeducational intervention just prior to discharge from the hospital. The goal of the intervention is that patients will be prepared and learn to interpret and react to physical and psychological symptoms that are related to recovering from a COVID-19 infection. Data is collected using standardized and validated patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) to assess mental health outcomes. The primary outcome is patient reported anxiety as assess by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. Perspectives: This study will provide a comprehensive understanding of the psychological implications of the COVID-19 outbreak. If successful, the minimal intervention is easily implemented in daily clinical practice.
This study evaluates two Internet-delivered cognitive behavioural therapy (ICBT) interventions: one for symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and one for symptoms of anxiety, depression, and PTSD. Both interventions have been tailored for Canadian public safety personnel (PSP). Outcomes of interest include preference for disorder-specific or transdiagnostic care, engagement with the interventions, changes in symptoms and functioning, and strengths and limitations of implementing ICBT with Canadian PSP.
Participants will download a phone-tracking app for a week to track phone usage, providing objective data on usage patterns. Quantitative tasks and questionnaires will also be carried out before and after the tracking period.
Background: Distress, anxiety, and other psychological disorders may be more common in people with primary brain tumors (PBTs). PBTs can affect their symptoms, quality of life, and their tolerance of cancer treatments. Researchers want to learn if virtual reality (VR) technology can help reduce stress and improve mood. VR uses computer technology to make fake experiences and environments that look real. This allows people to escape from their lives and experience more positive thoughts and emotions. Objective: To learn if it is feasible to use a VR relaxation intervention in people with PBTs. Eligibility: Adults 18 and older who have a brain tumor and have recently reported psychological distress during their participation in the Natural History Study (NHS), protocol #16C0151 Design: The VR intervention and all patient-reported outcome measures (PROs) will be done remotely using telehealth. Participants will be mailed a VR headset. This headset looks like a thick pair of goggles that is worn over the eyes. Participants will view computer-generated environments on this VR headset. Participants will fill out symptoms questionnaires at 4 different times points during participation in this study, including questionnaires for the NHS as well as 4 questionnaires unique to this study. There are also optional saliva samples collected at these timepoints. The 4 timepoints are: - Before the VR intervention - After the VR intervention - 1 week later - 4 weeks later Participants will also have a phone interview 1 week after the initial VR interevention, which will last 10 to 15 minutes. Participation lasts 4 to 6 weeks.
Lack of patient knowledge about ECT (electroconvulsive therapy) is a leading cause of treatment fear with 60% of ECT patients reporting high levels of anxiety. The purpose of this study is to determine if using Virtual Reality (VR) to allow patients' to experience a virtual ECT education session before treatment is useful in lowering treatment anxiety and increasing knowledge about ECT if compared to standard treatment. In addition, measuring heart rate and blood pressure levels before ECT treatment will allow us to assess changes in anxiety levels. Individuals who choose to participate will be placed (participant will have a 50% chance to be placed in either group) to view either a virtual reality video to experience a virtual ECT session, or to receive standard preparation, i.e. a discussion with a psychiatrist. Before and after this session participants will be asked to complete a measurement of their anxiety level and knowledge about ECT (ECT Attitude & Knowledge Questionnaire). Just before ECT treatment, blood pressure, heart rate and anxiety level will be measured. Participants will also complete cognitive and depression assessments. This study will help to develop a relationship between healthcare providers and patients and their families to help with education before ECT treatment.
This study aims to test the effectiveness of virtual reality (VR) as a non-pharmaceutical intervention to reduce pain and anxiety in children undergoing painful procedures in Phlebotomy, Radiology, Infusion, Orthopedics, Gastroenterology, and Immunology, amongst others, at CHLA, as measured by self- and proxy-report. Examples of the painful procedures include IV sticks, cast removals, allergy testing, and anorectal manometries.
A pilot-stage device feasibility study investigating a mask-free motion-monitoring patient immobilisation system for use during radiation therapy treatment of head and neck cancer (HNC). This mask-free system combines the standard radiation therapy (RT) head rest to help the patient remain still with a surface guidance detection system that uses sensors to detect and track patient movement. Patients who will have RT treatment for head and neck cancer involving an immobilisation mask will be asked to lie on the treatment couch for the normal treatment fraction time while the surface monitoring system is activated. We will then assess: i) The level of acceptance of the system by HNC patients currently being treated with RT using an immobilisation mask, and ii) The ability of the surface guidance system to monitor movement of the patients
Preoperative anxiety affects 40 to 60% of children. A literature review concluded that effective preparation strategies must involve parents, must be appropriate to their age and proposed upstream of the intervention. A double-readinganimated film aimed at informative was created for the children and their parents/legal guardians in order to solve the problem of anxiety found at the arrival of children in the operating room.
