Filter by:Observation of pre-precedure anxiety in pre-operative suite in children from age 2-12yrs, undergoing radiotherapy under general anesthesia.
The primary aim of the pilot study is to investigate the feasibility of conducting a randomized controlled trial (RCT) comparing the effects of transdiagnostic and diagnosis-specific cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for patients with anxiety disorders in routine psychiatric outpatient care in Stockholm, Sweden. It is hypothesized that an RCT is feasible in terms of recruitment, retention, therapist competence and adherence to treatments, and that the treatments are well received by participants.
The purpose of this study is to develop, evaluate the acceptability/feasibility (Phase IA), and test (Phase IB) the effectiveness of a brief, integrated, single-session, computer-based, culturally adapted personalized feedback intervention (PFI) designed to enhance knowledge regarding adverse anxiety-alcohol interrelations, increase motivation and intention to reduce hazardous drinking, and reduce positive attitudes and intention regarding anxiety-related alcohol use among Latinx hazardous drinkers with anxiety.
The current study seeks to test differences between a single-session large-group format of standard exposure, enhanced exposure, and a control condition in treating anxiety sensitivity. It is hypothesized that 1) participants assigned to either exposure condition will evidence greater reductions in anxiety sensitivity from pre-treatment to posttreatment relative to those in the control condition; 2) participants assigned to the enhanced exposure condition will evidence greater reductions in anxiety sensitivity from pre-treatment to posttreatment relative to those in the standard exposure condition. The investigators will test putative moderators and mechanisms of action. Prior to initiating the study for purposes of data analyses, the investigators will pilot study procedures during Spring 2020.
The aim of this study is to determine the effect of toy-type nebulizers on fear and anxiety in children receiving inhaler therapy. The research hypotheses are as follows: H0: There is no significant difference between the intervention group and the the control group in the mean score of the "Child Fear Scale" and "Child Anxiety Scale-State" during and after the inhaler treatment with a toy-type nebulizer. H1: During and after the s inhaler treatment with the toy-type nebulizer, the mean score of the "Child Fear Scale" and "Child Anxiety Scale-State" is significantly higher in the intervention group compared to the control group.
The aim of the study is to investigate the effect of preoperative patient education on the level of properative anxiety and postoperative psychosocial outcomes. Participants will be assigned to one of the 3 study groups: on-line education, contact education and control (no preoperative education). The investigators will evaluate preoperative anxiety level at different time points (baseline at 2 weeks before the surgery, at the evening before the surgery and postoperatively) and investigate dynamics of anxiety in the perioperative period. Additional qualitative interview by psychologists will be performed to evaluate the potential causes of increased/decreased preoperative anxiety. Impact on postoperative complications, well-being of the participant, quality of recovery and satisfaction with medical care will also be evaluated.
Background: There is a paucity of randomized clinical trials which address the relationship between training in mindfulness and neuropsychological outcomes. Also, how psychotherapeutic interventions were delivered before and during the COVID-19 pandemic and its possible differential results need more scientific attention. Aims: To compare the effectiveness of an intervention based on the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) versus a Mindfulness-based Emotional Regulation (MER) intervention among adult patients with anxiety disorders. Methods: This randomized, single-blind, clinical trial is being conducted in a community Mental Health Unit (Colmenar Viejo, Madrid) in Spain. Potential outpatients will be over 18 years (until 75 years) with some type of specific or unspecified anxiety disorder. They will be assessed for inclusion/exclusion criteria and randomized according to the score on the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-II (used as a blocking factor). One of the interventions was adapted from the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for anxiety disorders and MER was based on the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program. Each intervention has been designed to be weekly, during 8 weeks, guided by two Clinical Psychology residents. Interventions have been delivered face-to-face before the COVID-19 pandemic, or via online currently. A 2x3 mixed-factorial ANOVA (intervention type x pre-treatment, post-treatment and 6-month follow-up) will be conducted, with Sidak-correction post hoc tests. The primary measures are the TMT score (A and B forms), Stroop test, Digit span subtests from the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, version IV (Forward, Backward and Sequencing subtests), Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-II, and Anxiety Sensitivity Index-3 (ASI-3). Secondary measures are the Five Facets Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ), Toronto Alexithymia Scale 20-item (TAS-20), Reflective Functioning Questionnaire (RFQ-8), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and the World Health Organization's Quality of Life Questionnaire (WHOQOL-BREF). Norms based on the Spanish general population will be used. Results: This clinical trial started in February 2019 and it is expected to end in September 2023. The minimum sample size required is 128 participants (64 each intervention) to achieve medium effect sizes on primary outcomes (alfa = .05 and beta = .20). So far, 107 adult patients with anxiety disorders participated (64 participants in face-to-face interventions before the COVID-19 pandemic; and 43 participants via online, during the pandemic). Conclusions: This is the first study to compare two mindfulness-based interventions on several neurocognitive functions and other psychological domains among adult patients with anxiety disorders.
The proposed experimental study will be the first to investigate whether exercise vs. sitting enhances consolidation of extinction learning in adults with high AS and anxiety disorders, and the mechanistic pathways of expectancy, affect, and key stress response markers.
Experimental open-label randomized clinical trial to determine the effect of virtual Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) on the quality of life of patients with HIV, COVID-19 and anxiety or depression. It will be carried out at the hospital for 6 months, where people over 18 years of age with HIV from the infectious disease service will participate. In the study, patients will be randomized 1:1 in an intervention group, who will receive eight sessions of virtual CBT by 02 psychotherapists, and a control group. Additionally, patients will be consulted about the participation of at least one adult family member or caregiver in the study, if the patient and the family member agree, the family member or caregiver will enter the study. The informed consent process will be conducted by telephone, during the call the recruiting staff will read the consent document and the participant (patient and family member or caregiver) will give their consent by answering affirmatively to the questions asked at the end of the document. The main objective will be evaluated by comparing the quality of life measurement at three months with the baseline measurement, as well as the variation of anxiety and depression scores.
Cardiac surgery is not trivial. It requires opening the thorax in certain indications: coronary artery bypass grafting, valve replacements or plasties, aortic dissection, etc. These different procedures, both pre- and post-op, generate anxiety in the patient, the effects of which can be harmful to the recovery process and general well-being. It can be increased by the resuscitation environment during the immediate postoperative management. This environment also favors the development of delirium. It is possible to improve this environment by using non-drug and inexpensive techniques. Indeed, making the stay in the ICU better while respecting the safety of the patient and the efficiency of the care, could reduce anxiety as well as the appearance of delirium. Studies have been carried out on the effectiveness of music in health care with a positive impact on anxiety and pain. The proposed study aims to evaluate the implementation of relaxation moments adapted to the resuscitation sector from the day after surgery. They target the senses available and accessible at that moment, such as hearing (relaxing music chosen by the patient will be played) and sight (a multi-effect light projector and a bubble column will be deployed). Environmental stressors will be minimized, while maintaining an optimal level of safety. The primary objective is to compare anxiety before and after the first session in cardiac surgery patients in the cardiothoracic and vascular surgery (CCTV) resuscitation unit between the group with the usual rest session and the group with the rest session combining soft music and light. The secondary objectives are based on an evaluation of anxiety over different time periods, patient comfort, occurrence of postoperative delirium, patient pain, average length of stay (LOS). This is a pilot, comparative, monocentric, randomized, interventional research with minimal risks and constraints in 2 parallel groups. 110 patients will be included over a period of 12 months In the experimental group, once a day, a relaxation session with the association of soft music and light will be proposed by adapting the environment of the patient's resuscitation room. The control group will have the usual rest session.
