Risk Prediction of Taxane Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy

This is an observational study to discover risk factors of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) in 350 patients with early stage breast cancer undergoing taxane-based chemotherapy at two main sites (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) Hospital, including Rex Hospital, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Hospital). The primary purpose of this study to explore patient- and procedure-based variables that identify patients at risk for developing CIPN during chemotherapy.

Phosphatidylserine Improves Cognitive Function in the Elderly

Cognitive decline is a common symptom of aging, and age-related cognitive impairments are considered normal or inevitable, especially in people over 60, whose memory is more likely to be affected by age. As life expectancy has increased, the number of people with age-related cognitive impairment has also increased. The improvement or slowing of cognitive impairment has received more attention. Phosphatide is a naturally occurring Phosphatide, but it is the main acidic phospholipid in the brain. Phosphatidylserine (PS) is a phospholipid that regulates the function of key proteins in cell membranes and can improve brain function and repair brain damage. PS is thought to enhance neuronal membrane function, which in turn enhances cognitive function. However, there are few studies on the effect of PS on human cognitive function, especially on the elderly, and the results are inconsistent. In this study, people aged 60-70 were given PS intervention for 6 months. Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MOCA) and Mini-Mental State Examination.MMSE) and head MRI are used to evaluate the cognitive function of the subjects before and after the intervention to observe the influence of PS on the cognitive function of the elderly, which is of certain significance for the accurate assessment of the cognitive function of the elderly population and the improvement of the cognitive function of the elderly.

The Effect of Exercise With Wearable Walking Assist Robot in Various Environments

This single-blinded, randomized, controlled trial includes 60 healthy adults. The participants were randomized to four different groups. The first group performed over-ground walking without GEMS-H, the second group performed over-ground walking with GEMS-H applied resistance mode, the third group performed stair ascent with GEMS-H applied assist mode, and the fourth group were designated as the group that performed inclined gait with GEMS-H applied assist mode on a treadmill. Each group is divided in 15 participants.

Inspiratory Muscle Strength Training in Chronic Kidney Disease

More than 80% of individuals with chronic kidney disease have concomitant hypertension and the majority fail to achieve blood pressure control <130/80 mmHg, leading to high risk of cardiovascular diseases and end-stage kidney disease. A stepwise combination of lifestyle modifications and drug therapy is recommended to lower blood pressure; however, adherence to time-intensive lifestyle interventions such as aerobic exercise in patients with chronic kidney disease is poor. This clinical trial seeks to establish the efficacy of high-resistance inspiratory muscle strength training, a novel time-efficient lifestyle intervention, for lowering systolic blood pressure and improving endothelial function in midlife and older adults with moderate-to-severe chronic kidney disease and inadequately controlled hypertension, and to use innovate translational assessments to understand the mechanisms involved.

The number of age-related chronic diseases (like obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases) is increasing rapidly worldwide, reaching pandemic proportions. These age-related chronic diseases are associated with metabolic disturbances and mitochondrial dysfunction in humans. Nicotinamide adenosine dinucleotide (NAD) levels play an important role in energy metabolism and mitochondrial functioning and indeed it has been shown that high concentrations of NAD+ as well as a high NAD+/NADH ratio are strongly associated with metabolic and mitochondrial health. In contrast, decreased NAD+ bioavailability is reported in both ageing and obese humans as well as in diabetic mice. These findings fueled the idea of influencing NAD+ bioavailability in order to improve metabolic disturbances and mitochondrial dysfunction in humans. Supplementation with nicotinamide riboside (NR), a naturally occurring form of vitamin B3, may provide a way to boost cellular NAD+ levels. However, in contrast to animal studies, NR supplementation in humans has so far been unsuccessful in improving skeletal muscle mitochondrial function, exercise capacity or insulin sensitivity. Recently, it has been suggested that a situation where NAD+ levels become limited, is needed for NR supplementation to exert beneficial health effects. This situation could be achieved by combining exercise and NR supplementation. However, studies combining NR and exercise are lacking, which is why we would like to perform such a study here.
