Implication of Metabolic and Genomic Modifications in Elderly Subjects

An increase of longevity and of the number of men and women older than 60 years old is observed in most industrialized countries. Aging is a complex, multifactorial and continuous process involving physical and biological modifications such as a notably decrease in glucose tolerance and type 2 diabetes risk. Insulin sensitivity follow-up during aging is difficult mainly because of many confounding factors (environment, lifestyle). In 2006, SUVIMAX 2 study began, based on the monitoring of volunteers who participated in former SUVIMAX study (1994-2003). This study was a randomised trial which was designed to study the link between a low antioxidant intake and risk of cancer or ischemic heart disease. The subjects recently had a health check-up including complete information about their diet, physical and neurosensory status. Based on these data, a score was established to classify subjects according to their quality of aging ("successful aging versus "problematic aging") These volunteers, who undertook a 13-year follow-up (dietary and medical status), constitute the reference population to determine the mechanisms involved in the insulin resistance development in aging. The purpose of our research work is to determine whether the quality of aging could influence insulin sensitivity, by studying metabolic profile and change in gene expression (genes involved in glucose metabolism and metabolic senescence in muscle tissue) during aging.

Muscle Perfusion and Protein Metabolism in Elderly

The purpose of this study was to examine the role skeletal muscle perfusion plays in mediating muscle protein synthesis in healthy older and younger individuals. The investigators hypothesized that normalization of muscle perfusion in older men and women via exercise or infusion of a vasodilator would enhance nutritive flow and skeletal muscle protein synthesis in the elderly similar to that of their younger counterparts.

Study of Bone Disease in Older HIV-infected Adults

This study will look to see if there are changes in the blood cells that are associated with bone disease and sort out effects that are due to the HIV virus itself, the medications and see if faster aging occurs in the cells of HIV infected persons. Bone disease will be measured by a special X-ray called a DEXA scan. A DEXA scan is used by doctors to see if someone has normal bone mass for their age or if there is thinning of the bones. The purposes of this study are: - to learn how common bone disease is in HIV infected patients over the age of 50 years that receive their care at the CORE Center - to see what are the common causes of bone disease in older HIV infected persons - to see if there are differences in blood cells and levels of cytokines in patients who do or do not have bone disease, as this may help researchers determine the cause of bone disease.

Effect of Immunocal® With Exercise Versus Casein With Exercise on Aging Processes in Elderly Persons

Aging is typically associated with a decrease in skeletal muscle mass and muscle function, which contributes decisively to disability in old age and to the loss of quality of life.Resistance exercise can increase muscle strength, function and mass in older adults. The primary aim of this study is to determine whether the combination of resistance training with a supplementation of a cysteine- rich whey protein isolate (Immunocal) compared to combination of resistance training with casein used as control (casein contains little cysteine) could have the potential to provide a synergic beneficial impact on muscle mass and function which could translate to an improved quality of life in elderly persons.

Dissector Assisted Malar Elevation for Rhytidoplasty

BACKGROUND: Endoscopy was first used in plastic surgery for the treatment of frontal rhytides. This minimally invasive approach allows the treatment of frontal wrinkles using a practical procedure that does not directly interfere with the frontalis muscle, acting only on its antagonists. It is also possible to treat the middle third of the face, but these evolutions depends on special surgical instruments. Videoendoscopic approach in rhytidoplasty have been improved by new devices and surgical instruments. The mid third of the face can be treated in different ways. Zygomatic projection can be achieved by the use of the Dissector Assisted Malar Elevation (DAME) procedure. AIM: Evaluate the zygomatic projection achieved by DAME in videoendoscopic rhytidoplasties. METHODS: 30 non-white female patients, 30 to 59 years old, will be submitted to videoendoscopic rhytidoplasty with malar elevation by the DAME. Pre- and post-operative facial appearance will be evaluated by digital photogrammetry.

Analysis of Balance in the Aging Process

A simple balance becomes a challenge. Objective: To evaluate the functional balance in the aging process. Methods: The group was formed by 48 people from 10 to 85 years old. The evaluation instruments are the Berg Balance Scale (BBS), the Performance Oriented Mobility Assessment (POMA), the Unipodal Support Test, the Functional Reach Test and the Romberg's Test.

Enhance of Language Learning With Neurostimulation
