Vitamin B have analgesic role in some neuropathic pain conditions.This study aimedto evaluate the relationship between vitamin D and vitamin B12 levels and neuropathic pain in lipedema.
The overarching objective of this two-phase project is to assess the effects of fortifying iodized salt with folic acid on improving women's folate status. Folate insufficiency is the primary risk factor for neural tube defects (NTDs), which are highly prevalent in Ethiopia. The purposes of Phase 2 of the project, described herein, are to complete a community-based, randomized, dose-response intervention trial of edible salt fortified with just iodine or iodine and one of two levels of folic acid among non-pregnant women of reproductive age (WRA), We will assess the effects of the intervention on women's discretionary salt intakes, markers of folate and iodine status, and incidence of any adverse events.
Folic acid and vitamin B12 play an interdependent role in key cellular processes, namely deoxyribonucleic acid synthesis, cell division, red blood cell formation, and nervous system myelination. A deficiency of either vitamin will predispose teenagers to many diseases, which persist across their lifespan. Fortification of food with micronutrients has been promoted to reduce micronutrient deficiencies. A large segment of vulnerable populations in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) resides in rural settings and has limited access to large-scale commercialized fortified foods. In such operational constraints, the use of locally (small-scale) fortified cereals could be an alternative intervention. The study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of small scale folic acid and vitamin B12 fortified cereals in improving folate and vitamin B12 status, growth velocity, puberty status, anaemia, cognitive development and mental health among teenage girls, in rural rift valley of Ethiopia.
The goal of this observational study is to compare the nutritional intake among pregnant women with a strict plant-based diet versus an omnivorous diet. The main aim is to compare vitamin B12 intake. Participants will be asked to: - fill out a health questionnaire - fill out a three-day food diary - undergo blood sampling Researchers will compare pregnant women with a strict plant-based diet and pregnant women with an omnivorous diet to see if their nutritional intake is comparable.
Older adults are recommended to meet their daily vitamin B12 (B12) requirements by consuming foods with added B12 and/or taking B12 supplements (i.e. sources of free B12) because of an age-related decreased digestion and absorption capacity for food-bound B12. Currently, B12 is not added to foods in Canada, except for simulated dairy and meat products. Yoghurt with added B12 is a novel dairy product that could fill a gap that presently exists in the Canadian market and has the potential to provide Canadian older adults with an alternative dietary source of B12 that could help improve their B12 status. Thus, the objective of this study was to assess the efficacy of the daily consumption of one serving of yoghurt fortified with B12 versus unfortified yoghurt for 8 weeks on the B12 status of healthy older adults, assessed using serum total B12. The primary hypothesis of this study was that the daily consumption of B12-fortified yoghurt would increase serum total B12 concentration of older adults compared to the consumption of unfortified yoghurts.
Infertility affects around 15 % of couples in their reproductive years. Even though the use of assisted reproductive technologies (ART) in aforementioned couples is increasing, their success rate is still relatively low. Hence it is important to identify and better understand potential modifiable dietary and lifestyle risk factors that may influence the success of ART. This study will include women undergoing IVF with a view to investigating the relationship between preconception dietary patterns, body composition, physical activity level, serum values of vitamin B9, vitamin B12 and vitamin D and the outcomes of IVF, such as the number of obtained oocytes, fertilization rate and clinical pregnancy. Main hypothesis is that women undergoing IVF, who eat a balanced diet, maintain healthy body weight and have adequate serum levels of vitamin B9, vitamin B12 and vitamin D, have a higher chance of achieving better IVF outcomes.
Veganism and vegetarianism have clear benefits where they have a lower risk of many health issues. However, they also have a higher risk of nutrients and vitamin deficiency such as iron and vitamin B12. Iron can be found in plant-based food but in varying quantities, whereas vitamin B12 is mainly found in red meat, thus vegans and vegetarians can only take this vitamin in supplements such as tablets. In this study, the investigators are testing two interventions, the consumption of recipes with a certain iron amount to increase iron levels, and the consumption of vitamin B12 biofortified plants to increase serum B12 levels in vegan and vegetarian participants.
Nitrous oxide has become an increasingly popular recreational drug amongst young people, particularly at festivals, nightclubs and parties. Considering the drug is not illegal to possess, has low cost in the form of 'whippets' and can be easily purchased online, it has become the second most commonly used recreational drug amongst people aged 16-24 in the UK. However, nitrous oxide is known to irreversibly inactivate the functioning of vitamin B12, a vitamin required for the maintenance and proper functioning of nerves in the spinal cord. Neurological symptoms in this population have been reported in around 3.4% of nitrous oxide users, although the true incidence is expected to be higher as the cases being reported by UK hospitals continues to rise. Patients may present with adverse neurological symptoms like tingling, weakness, coordination and mobility problems. Currently, studies reviewing the functional recovery of these patients have been limited by a retrospective study design, short follow up duration and being limited to small cohort sizes. This is in part linked to patient non-compliance and non-attendance at follow-up appointments. The investigators will therefore prospectively recruit all patients presenting with these symptoms and continue to collect data relating to their neurological recovery for 12 months. Data collection will be remote to ensure it is of low burden to the participants. This will allow the investigating team and others to fully appraise the severity of these toxic neuropathies and understand how best to manage their follow up.
