Filter by:DESTINY D-Dimer is an observational feasibility study, and a collaboration between the University of South Wales and Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board (CTMUHB). The study is based at St. John's Medical Practice in Aberdare, where participant recruitment will take place. Blood D-dimer data will be collected from CTMUHB Pathology Laboratory services, at Prince Charles Hospital. Study blood samples will be obtained by the research student, LAH, under the direction of Dr Owen Thomas at St John's Medical Centre. The participant data will be collected by the research student who will conduct a Wells' Risk Score and perform D-dimer POC tests to generate quantitative data. Data will later be compared by the research student with the diagnoses obtained from Secondary Care at Prince Charles Hospital via analysis of medical records to include a laboratory generated D-Dimer results and additional diagnostics (eg. Doppler). A laboratory based analytical verification of D-dimer POC tests will be undertaken to compare with the current laboratory method. The study will compare the data from the D-dimer POC tests and those gained using laboratory methods at Prince Charles Hospital.
This study will evaluate the effects on venous blood flow of the investigational device, OsciPulse system, which is an external intermittent limb compression device. The study will enroll healthy human subjects who will have their deep venous blood flow measured by vascular ultrasound during immobility, use of the OsciPulse system, and use of two reference vascular compression devices. Our hypothesis is that the OsciPulse system will create distinct patterns of venous flow, specifically at the site of venous valves, in comparison to the reference compression devices.
Investigators are building an empirical evidence base for real world data through large-scale replication of randomized controlled trials. The investigators' goal is to understand for what types of clinical questions real world data analyses can be conducted with confidence and how to implement such studies.
All trauma patients receive Lovenox or other prophylactic medication to prevent deep vein clots from forming. For the trauma patients with orthopedic injuries requiring surgery there is controversy over safety and efficacy when prophylaxis is started preoperatively vs postoperatively. This study is to evaluate both approaches for safety in terms of bleeding events during and 24 hours after surgery as well as preventing deep vein clot formation. This will be a randomized double blinded study using Lovenox or placebo as the medications given preoperatively. Postoperative Lovenox will be given to both groups per routine regime.
This is a prospective chart study that will aim to assess objective data on compliance levels to low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) injections among pregnant and postnatal women undergoing VTE thromboprophylaxis treatment at Cork University Maternity Hospital. This is a study that will help shine light on accurate data for compliance and possible factors affecting it, which will be useful for more individualised treatment plans for future patients. Patients at higher risk of Venous thromboembolism undergoing VTE thromboprophylaxis will be invited to participate in the study. Once the patient reads the information leaflet and signs consent, data will then be collected from the patients medical record. The patient will be given a smart sharps bin with an individual, unique product code. This device will be provided by HealthBeacon, a Dublin based start-up company. The device will be personalised with the treatment schedule pre-loaded onto it. When a used LMWH injection is disposed into the smart sharps bin, an infrared sensor is activated. The system captures an image of the injection in the chamber before moving it to the normal 'sharps' container of the bin for disposal. The captured image is time-stamped and sent to HealthBeacon's electronic database. HealthBeacon will only have the data pertaining to the disposal of injections for each sharps bin (i.e. the timing of the disposal of each used injection in each pre-coded bin). We are blinded to the compliance information and will only will receive the raw Data once treatment is completed. Data will be analysed to determine compliance of LMWH injections. This study will enable us to have a better insight on accurate compliance rates for LMWH injections in pregnant women at higher risk for venous thromboembolism (VTE). Understanding compliance with LMWH injections and the factors which can affect it, will hopefully guide future information and education that we offer to patients who are prescribed LMWH injections and help decrease maternal mortality rates in future.
This study evaluates the risks and experience of blood clots and bleeding in patients with blood cancers. While it is standard of care to use medications to reduce the risk of blood clots in hospitalized individuals, some patients with blood cancers have low platelet counts that can increase the concern for bleeding complications associated with these medications. At this time, the optimal management strategies for blood clots are not well known for patients with blood cancers. This pilot study evaluates additional information that could help doctors know which patients are at highest risk for blood clots.

This clinical trial is designed to evaluate if the periodic screening for deep venous thrombosis by ultrasound of lower extremity in patients with intensive care unit (ICU) patients with COVID 19 impacts on mortality, ICU stay and total length of stay in the hospital, along with other outcomes.
The NoCVT study will investigate CVT (2014-2023) in a large Norwegian population (> 3 millions) using several approaches combining existing health registries, clinical databases and new prospectively collected clinical data to explore epidemiology, risk factors, diagnostics, treatment, and the long-term prognosis of CVT.
Background: venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a common complication in critically ill patients, admitted to the Intensive Care Units (ICUs). At the present time, there is no validated score to estimate risks and benefits of antithrombotic pharmacological prophylaxis in this subset of patients. Aim of the study: investigating potential harms and benefits of a protocol for systematic screening of DVT in critically ill patients, admitted to an ICU. Expected relevance: systematic screening for deep vein thrombosis (DVT) through ultrasound (US) lower limb veins examination could help defining the indication to antithrombotic pharmacological treatment, but no protocol of systematic screening has been validated so far. Furthermore, the screening could be associated with over-diagnosis and consequent over-treatment, as well as increased management burden for the caregivers and higher healthcare costs.
