Filter by:Schizophrenia is associated with high rates of cigarette smoking and associated morbidity and mortality. In this study, smokers with schizophrenia will complete a baseline session and then randomized to varenicline (VAR) or placebo (PLA). After 1 week on medication, participants will complete a cigarette rating task session. Participants will then undergo a 72-hr abstinence period in which they will come to the laboratory twice per day and receive high-value cash reinforcement contingent upon meeting a strict breath CO abstinence criterion. At each visit, they will rate withdrawal symptoms, mood and craving. At the end of the abstinence period, they will repeat the cigarette rating task. Participants will return to the lab to provide a CO sample 24 hours later, and will text the lab with videos of their CO samples for one week. Date and time of smoking relapse will be measured from these samples.
This project aims to develop electroretinogram as a new putative marker for dopamine release, and as a predictor of treatment response among patients seeking treatment for smoking cessation. Tobacco smoking continues to be a major public health challenge. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter released in the brain. Several lines of evidence suggest that dopamine release deficit in the brain is involved in the development and maintenance of nicotine dependence. The investigators hypothesize that smokers who do not have a deficit in dopamine release will more readily respond to behavioral treatment for smoking cessation, and in particular, financial incentives contingent on abstinence (Contingency Management). Previous pilot data suggest electroretinogram (ERG), which records electrical signals from the retina in response to light, is a clinically accessible correlate to dopamine release in the brain. The project proposes an ERG-based biomarker, and a pilot clinical trial to apply this biomarker to personalize smoking cessation treatment. This clinically tractable biomarker of central dopamine release may have a large number of future applications in the diagnosis and treatment of other mental illnesses and substance use disorders. The study will recruit normal controls and smokers, measure ERG before and after a standard dose of oral immediate release methylphenidate. Smokers will undergo a 12-week standardized treatment course of CM. The investigators will test whether smoking status and the response to CM are correlated to changes in ERG in response to methylphenidate challenge.
The purpose of this study is to examine whether tobacco affects recovery from PTSD. There are 3 goals of the study; (1) to test if quitting tobacco prior to PTSD treatment affects treatment success, (2) to test how PTSD symptoms change in those who have quit tobacco compared to those who continue to use and (3) to explore how tobacco use and tobacco withdrawal symptoms change during PTSD treatment.
Breast cancer patients who smoke, are at greater risk for treatment complications. The purpose of this study is to see if the researchers can find ways to help patients who have breast cancer quit smoking. They will compare two ways to help people quit smoking. Some patients will receive varenicline, a prescription medicine also known as Chantix,®. Other patients will receive a placebo drug. A placebo is an inactive substance that contains no medicine. All patients will receive smoking cessation counseling provided by our tobacco treatment specialists. They hope that what the researchers learn from this study will help us improve our smoking cessation treatment program for breast cancer patients.
This study is to see if a new nicotine replacement therapy safely helps people to quit smoking if it is used the way it would be if it were sold at the pharmacy and used at home. Approximately 1500 subjects will be enrolled into the study. The study will require participants to use the treatment for 12 weeks and there will be a 14-week follow-up period. The study will be conducted in approximately 20 pharmacies across the United States. At the first visit to the pharmacy, participants will be asked some questions to see if they are eligible to participate. Participants will be asked to sign a consent form if they agree to participate. Participants will answer some more questions, and blow into a machine to measure their carbon monoxide (CO) levels to make sure they qualify for the trial. Participants will be asked to go to a nearby dentist who will look at their mouths. Participants will go back to the pharmacy and if they qualify, they will be given a supply of their assigned treatment. They will have an equal chance of receiving a treatment that has a drug in it or one that has no drug in it. They will be given a diary to keep track of how much of the treatment they use. Subjects will go to the pharmacy four more times to hand in their diaries and blow into a machine that will measure their CO levels. At the last visit, subjects will have their mouths examined by a dentist again to have their mouth checked. Subjects will receive four telephone calls during the study where they will be asked some questions. After the 12 week treatment period, subjects will receive two to three more telephone calls, where they will be asked to answer some questions. Participants may be asked to come back to the pharmacy two more times to blow into the carbon monoxide machine again.
Including a tailored moderate-intensity physical activity intervention in a standard smoking cessation treatment program (pharmaceutical treatment and counseling) increases the chances of quitting and reduces nicotine withdrawal symptoms, negative moods, stress, and weight gain.
The purpose of this study is to determine: 1) the short-term clinical efficacy and safety of bupropion for helping adolescent tobacco smokers quit, and 2) The role of withdrawal symptoms in the maintenance of smoking in adolescents.
