enhanced recovery after spinal surgery protocol (ERAS) versus conventional care in non insulin diabetic patients. Our hypothesis is that non-insulin dependent diabetic patients who will undergo lumbar decompression surgery following ERAS care may have higher quality of recovery after surgery, lower postoperative pain scores, decreased opioid consumption, reduced Length of stay and reduce perioperative stress compared to conventional general anaesthesia.

Type | Measure | Description | Time frame | Safety issue |
---|---|---|---|---|
Primary | Quality of recovery after surgery (QoR40) | 40-item questionnaire that assesses five dimensions of recovery after surgery and anesthesia: comfort, emotions, physical independence, patient support, and pain and has a mean time to completion of 5 min. | postoperative day 2 | |
Secondary | heart rate | beats/minute | surgery period | |
Secondary | mean arterial blood pressure | mmHg | surgery period | |
Secondary | Postoperative pain score | Scale of 0-10, 0 being no pain, 10 being the worst pain possible | 8 hours postoperative | |
Secondary | Perioperative nalbuphine requirements | measured in mg | 24 hours postoperative | |
Secondary | postoperative hospital stay | measured in days after surgery | postoperative day 5 | |
Secondary | Time to first postoperative analgesic request | measured in minutes | 24 hours postoperative | |
Secondary | Blood sugar level | mg/dl | time of admission to PACU | |
Secondary | Number of patients required rescue anti-emetic postoperatively | patients receive ondansetron | 24 hours postoperative | |
Secondary | number of participants with Perioperative complications | vomiting, wound infection, urinary tract infection , deep vein thrombosis, haematoma | postoperative day 5 | |
Secondary | serum markers of stress response: C reactive protein ( CRP) | mg/dl | postoperative day 2 | |
Secondary | serum markers of stress response: interleukin 6 ( IL-6) | pg/ml | postoperative day 2 |
