Filter by:Substance use and drug related disorders are important public health problems. Alcohol and illicit drug use account for 5.4% of the total burden of disease and the peak has been found in early adulthood (between ages 20 and 30 years). Substance use is one of the leading problems among Chilean adolescents. One out of four 8 th to 12 th graders have smoked cigarettes in the last month. A 35.6% of students (37%, girls; 34.2%, boys) between Year 8 and Year 12 have reported any alcohol use during the last month. It is worrying that a third of 14 years old students report using alcohol in the last month in Chile. Furthermore, two out of three who are using alcohol, report regularly using 5 or more drinks in a row during the last month. Cannabis use among young Chileans has increased in recent years. Today, one out of five students between Year 8 and Year 12 referred cannabis use during the last 30 days. Almost a 20% of students in Year 8 have used cannabis in the last year. Therefore, is urgent to provide evidence-based drug preventive interventions to the Chilean population, specifically to school students, to tackle this problem and reduce the risk for a more dramatic future health scenario. The aim of this study is to develop a culturally appropriate version of the Unplugged program to the Chilean culture, and to test its effectiveness among early adolescents in low-income primary schools in Santiago, Chile. This project involves two stages: first, formative work, where the research team will review, adapt and pilot the Spanish version of the program to Chile; and second, the culturally adapted version of Unplugged program will be tested in a single-blind two-arm cluster randomized controlled trial. At the end of the intervention, investigators expect that students in schools receiving the Chilean version of Unplugged will have a lower proportion of substance use and a lower proportion of students passing from experimental use to regular use of tobacco, alcohol, and cannabis, than in control schools.
Substance use has become a significant public health problem, given its magnitude and the treatment gap encountered when a dependency disorder has already been installed. Still, to date, there are no studies in Chile that show the effectiveness of a universal preventive program implemented in educational settings, using a randomized controlled clinical trial design. This study consists of evaluating the effectiveness of the Social Competence Promotion Program among Young Adolescents (SCPP-YA), which aims to postpone the onset of substance use and reduce their consumption. This is a randomized controlled clinical trial with two arms, including students of 6th grade from high socioeconomic vulnerability schools in Santiago. The primary outcome is the incidence of tobacco consumption in the last month. The SCPP-YA consists of 16 sessions that will be implemented during the academic year (2020) and complemented with three booster sessions the following year (2021). This intervention mainly provides strategies for self-regulation, problem-solving, and substance use prevention. The investigators expect that students in the intervention group will delay the onset of any substance use, especially tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana when compared with students in the control group.
The investigators propose to develop an open-source, publicly available machine learning model that health systems could download and apply to their electronic health record data marts to screen for substance misuse in their patients. The investigators hypothesize that the natural language processing algorithm can provide a standardized and interoperable approach for an automated daily screen on all hospitalized patients and provide better implementation fidelity for screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment.
Individual placement support (IPS) is an evidence-based supported employment model for people with severe mental illness, designed to achieve employment in mainstream competitive jobs, either part-time or full-time. The aim of this study is to assess the (i) effectiveness of embedding the (IPS)/Peer Support intervention as part of the primary care centre in securing employment of adults living in the downtown eastside in comparison to the usual treatment WorkBC (control group). (ii) effectiveness of IPS/Peer Support versus the usual treatment (WorkBC) in improving mental illness, quality of life and personal recovery through participation in employment.
Adolescent alcohol tobacco and drug (ATOD) use is a major public health concern, with rates for Latino middle school youth higher than other ethnic groups. One well-established precursor of adolescent ATOD use is psychosocial stress. The proposed project examines the preliminary efficacy of Unidos to decrease ATOD use among Latino youth in new settlement areas. The goals of this efficacy trial will be achieved by accomplishing two specific aims: (1) Evaluate the potential of the intervention to delay the initiation into or reduce ATOD use among Latino youth who are 1st to 2nd generation immigrants; and (2) Evaluate the intervention's ability to strengthen known protective factors against ATOD use among adolescents-specifically child personal agency and parent-child, peer, and school relationships. The study's primary hypothesis is: The Unidos Se Puede program will delay initiation of ATOD use of current non-users and reduce use among current users.
The purpose of this study is to provide a process and outcome evaluation of the HMRF grant-funded Connections program. Phoenix Houses of New York, Inc. has been given a new grant to continue and refine its successful Connections program which equips single and coupled participants with significant substance use disorders (SUD) with the skills and knowledge needed to (1) create and/or sustain healthy relationships/marriages, (2) equip participants with the skills and knowledge to raise children in a functional and healthy environment, (3) improve their financial stability, job readiness and employability to improve economic self-sufficiency and responsibility, and (4) reduce relationship stress and strain on interactions between co-parents.
1. To use a SMART design to evaluate which of four sequences of New Hope (NH), Elders Resilience (ER) and Case Management (CM) have the greater effects on immediate and longer-term suicidal ideation (primary outcome) and resilience (secondary outcome) among American Indian (AI) adolescents ages 10-24 identified at risk for suicide. Hypotheses: i. New Hope vs. CM alone will significantly reduce participant suicidal ideation. ii. Elders Resilience vs. CM alone will significantly improve participant resilience. iii. New Hope followed by Elders Resilience will have the strongest effects on suicidal ideation and resilience. iv. CM alone will have the weakest effects of all combinations. Secondary Aims: 2. To examine mediators and moderators of treatment effectiveness and sequencing in order to determine which types and sequence of interventions is best suited for which youth. 3. To assess the acceptability, feasibility and capacity for sustainability of the Hub's key intervention components (Surveillance/Case Management, New Hope and Elders' Resilience) from the perspective of multiple stakeholders as they are implemented across different tribes.
This Phase II SBIR project is designed to address the critical public health problem of bullying and cyberbullying among middle school age youth. The project involves developing and testing bullying and cyberbullying prevention materials, including interactive classroom sessions and corresponding serious games, based on the evidence-based substance abuse prevention approach called Life Skills Training. The product has the potential to fill a gap in the intervention tools currently available to schools that can be widely disseminated throughout the country using existing marketing and dissemination channels and decrease the adverse consequences of bullying and cyberbullying as well as substance abuse.
The goal of this project is to evaluate the feasibility, acceptability, and effect size of a new computerized Motivational Enhancement Therapy (cMET) intervention for alcohol-involved adolescents in primary care.
The investigators hypothesize that individuals receiving the brief substance use intervention will have better substance use and intimate partner violence outcomes than individuals receiving the general health improvement intervention. All participants receive standard batterer intervention.
