Piloting a Patient-Reported Outcome Measure for Opioid Use Disorder Recovery in a Clinical Setting

Performance measure can improve quality of care at the patient, provider, and systems level of care, and patient-reported outcome measures bring a needed patient-centered focus. Recovery has been difficult to measure for people with substance use disorders, and is more challenging in the context of opioid use disorders (OUD) and treatment medications. This study will examine a recovery patient-reported outcome measure to determine if patients and clinicians find it useful and acceptable in the clinical context, and if it leads to improved outcomes.

This project aims to enroll 220 incarcerated individuals living with HIV, Hepatitis C (HCV), or history of substance misuse preparing for release into a pilot implementation study to test the feasibility and acceptability of an adapted Coordinated Transitional Care intervention in a Criminal Justice setting (CJC-TraC). Participants can expect to be on study for up to 6 months.

Enhancing Substance Use Treatment Services to Decrease Dropout and Improve Outpatient Treatment Utilization in Emerging Adults

Emerging adults (ages 18-25) are at higher risk for substance use disorders, including opiate addiction, than any other age group but are also more likely to drop out early from substance use treatment services. This project will evaluate an enhancement to usual services, delivered by peer recovery supports, specifically aimed at improving treatment adherence and reducing dropout in this age group. The study will also answer key questions about risk factors for dropout among emerging adults and the financial sustainability of enhancing services to reduce dropout.

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation on Inhibitory Control in Addictions.

The research in neuroscience of the last 20 years is defined, in addition to continuing to advance in the field of behavioral and pharmacological therapy, by the birth and development of a new therapeutic category, called neuromodulation. Neuromodulation offers the possibility of producing changes in the Nervous System (SN) and therefore, in behavior, in addition to lasting over time. One of the most used non-invasive neuromodulation techniques is transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). The benefits of tDCS are promising and varied, so it is a potential neurorehabilitation tool, which has also shown its greatest effectiveness when accompanied by complementary rehabilitation treatment. The present study focuses on the effect of tDCS on addiction. Specifically, there is a great problem with the high rates of relapse presented by those individuals who try to abandon addictive behavior. Therefore, the maintenance of the abstinence period is the central theme of addiction research and the main challenge of rehabilitation at present. For that aim, the intervention will be carried out in a sample in the intermediate phase (internal) in the NOESSO (No EstáS Sólo) therapeutic community (Almería, Spain), between day 15 after arrival and the first day to leave on leave (day 45-60). The research will be made up of a previous period of selection and collection of data related to addiction, together with two phases or moments of correlative intervention and evaluation. Users will receive a bilateral (F3/F4) and repeated stimulation of 2 mA intensity for 20 min each, that is, every 24h for 5 consecutive days in each phase. Through this procedure, the aim is to seek to increase adherence to treatment in the early intervention phase and decrease the dropout rate due to the enhancement of inhibitory control. On the other hand, in the second phase, advanced intervention is sought to reduce craving, through an improvement in inhibitory and emotional control at the time of returning to the context of real consumption. In order to increase the knowledge about intra-individual differences in the effect of tDCS, researchers will compare the early intervention (Phase 1, at the begging of the rehabilitation process) with the advanced intervention (Phase 2, right before the first leave).

Endocarditis has a high rate of sickness and death, involves a long hospitalization and a long-term use of IV antibiotics necessitating six (6) weeks of in-patient hospital stay, and comes with a high cost.

Randomized Trial of a Data-driven Technical Assistance System for Drug Prevention Coalitions

This project is designed to test the Coalition Check-Up (CCU)-a theory-based and data-driven technical assistance (TA) system that supports community coalitions' implementation of evidence-based programs (EBPs) for drug prevention. The primary aims of the project are to: 1) Estimate the impact of the CCU on coalition capacity. Coalitions will be randomly assigned to the CCU or a 'TA as usual' condition to evaluate whether the CCU improves coalition capacity as measured by coalition member reports of team processes, network composition, and collaborative structure. 2) Estimate the impact of the CCU on implementation of evidence-based programs. The study will test the hypothesis that coalitions receiving the CCU will implement EBPs with greater: a) quantity, b) quality, and c) sustainability. The study will also test coalition capacity as a mediator of CCU impact on EBP implementation. 3) Estimate the impact of the CCU on youth substance use. The study will test the hypothesis that communities receiving the CCU will reduce youth substance use relative to communities in the comparison condition. The study will also test EBP implementation as a mediator of CCU impact on youth substance use.
