Filter by:The purpose of this proposed study is to develop, refine and test the use of Interactive Voice Response (IVR) technology as a means of increasing re-engagement of low income smokers in telephone support for tobacco cessation (quit lines). If this strategy proves to be acceptable and feasible, it may offer a technological solution to increase access to and utilization of a widely available evidence-based form of behavioral treatment for low income smokers. The primary aims of this research are to: 1. Develop an IVR system that delivers tailored audio messages to increase low income smokers' re-engagement in treatment offered by two state quit lines (Washington and Indiana). The investigators will develop: a) a menu of audio messages that can be delivered by an IVR system; b) an IVR algorithm (i.e., a set of decision rules) to make proactive automated calls to deliver brief, tailored messages for re-engaging low income smokers who previously used the quit line. 2. Evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of an IVR system as a tool to re-engage low income smokers into quit line treatment measured by number of IVR calls answered, number of smokers who re-engage in treatment and satisfaction with IVR calls. Hypothesis 2.1 - It is hypothesized that the rates of re-engagement into treatment among those receiving the IVR intervention will be higher than smokers not proactively invited to re-engage in quit line services.
The purpose of this study is to determine whether a perioperative smoking cessation program, implemented at least 3 weeks prior to elective surgery, is effective in increasing rates of smoking cessation or reduction. Intraoperative and immediate postoperative complications will also be compared.
The objective of this proof-of-concept pilot study is to evaluate Donepezil HCL (Aricept) for side effects and effects on smoking behavior and performance on neurocognitive tasks in a population of dependent smokers.
The Objective of this study is to introduce a practically feasible multifaceted intervention in the preadmission clinic to help reduce smoking in preoperative surgical patients. The investigators aim to study the effectiveness of such a program in promoting positive change in smoking behavior among patients before surgery. The forced abstinence enforced on patients during hospital stay for their surgery can also be used to help smokers remain tobacco free long term. A significant percentage of surgical patients will be receptive to smoking cessation interventions in the preadmission clinic and will refrain from smoking at 24 and 52 weeks after starting the treatment.
This is a cross-sectional, epidemiological study to determine the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors such as obesity, smoking, dyslipidemia, diabetes mellitus and hypertension in patients attending General Practice clinics in the Africa and Middle East region. A total of 4300 patients will be evaluated. In patients who are found to have previously been diagnosed with cardiovascular (CV) risk factors such as dyslipidemia or hypertension, the level of control of their respective conditions will also be evaluated.
The current study was designed to determine the exposure of adult smokers and non-smokers to cigarette smoke constituents through evaluation of selected biomarkers of exposure.
This study will analyze a series of biological and behavioral markers in different populations of smokers. The study groups will differ in their cigarette consumption and level of nicotine dependence. This analysis will help to identify factors that might be important for smoking behavior and nicotine addiction. The results from this study will contribute to improve campaigns for smoking prevention and treatments for smoking cessation.
The goal of this patient-randomized effectiveness trial is to demonstrate that an inpatient technology-supported assisted referral (I-TSAR) and follow-up approach is an effective and cost-effective method to help hospitalized patients successfully quit smoking. The proposed study represents a unique opportunity to assess the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of linking inpatient and outpatient delivery of smoking cessation services in two large and very different health care delivery systems. We will enroll 900 participants (600 intervention, 300 controls) over 15-months and collect follow-up survey and health care utilization data over 12 months to estimate: 1) smoking abstinence at 6 and 12 months for I-TSAR intervention recipients compared to usual care; 2) the dose effect on smoking abstinence at 6 and 12 months for I-TSAR recipients compared to usual care; 3) total and mean costs per participant for I-TSAR and usual care recipients, and, if effective, estimate the incremental cost-effectiveness of the intervention vs. controls at 12 months from health plan/insurer and societal perspectives; and 4) differences in health care utilization at 12 months for I-TSAR versus controls.
Smoking is the most important risk factor of COPD, but only a fourth of smokers had COPD in their life. There are also healthy smokers without evidence of COPD. Investigators hypothesize that innate immunity may affect this difference between COPD patients and healthy smokers, because TLR4 is the receptor of LPS, which is the one of important substance in cigarette. Investigators will measure TLR2 and TLR4 expression in lung tissue of patients whose lung will be resected. Investigators will compare the level of expression between COPD patients and healthy smokers.
Obesity represents a chronic disease associated with significant cardiovascular disease (CVD) morbidity and mortality. Weight gain in young adults adversely impacts the development of CVD risk factors. Further, there is a clear relationship between weight loss in obese persons and reduction in these CVD risk factors. Unfortunately, young adults are at high risk for weight gain. Although the scientific literature contains a number of reports regarding successful weight loss efficacy studies, young adults are typically underrepresented. Cigarette smoking is the leading preventable cause of morbidity and mortality, but quitting smoking frequently results in significant weight gain. Proactive tobacco quit lines using behavioral smoking cessation interventions combined with nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) have been shown to help persons quit smoking. However, concerns about post-cessation weight gain have been reported as a significant barrier to quitting for many smokers particularly young adults. If an efficacious behavioral weight loss program could be combined with an efficacious behavioral smoking cessation program that prevented or significantly attenuated post-cessation weight gain, then a large public health benefit may result. Such a combined weight loss/ weight gain prevention / smoking cessation program that used targeted intervention strategies to young adults, removed barriers to participation, and utilize interactive technology should be appealing to this age group. To date such a combined program has not been tested in young adult cigarette smokers. Therefore, the objective of this clinical trial is to develop and test a behavioral weight loss / weight gain prevention intervention delivered through interactive technology that can be used in conjunction with an efficacious tobacco quit line. A total of 330 participants will be necessary to adequately address the following specific aims.
