The purpose of this study is to develop a fit-for-purpose biochemical verification tool that can be used to detect concomitant use of a few (less than 5) conventional cigarettes.
This project aims to enhance the emotional and physical well-being of veterans through the reduction of smoking by utilizing a web-based, computerized tailored intervention (CTI) with feedback messages delivered via cell phone. CTIs have shown increasing promise as useful behavior change programs for improved health behaviors. A variety of modalities are to deliver personalized CTI information and feedback; however, the ubiquity and sophistication of today's wireless mobile technologies represent new modes of delivery for empirically based smoking cessation and other behavioral health interventions. The CTI is based on the empirically-supported Transtheoretical Model of Behavior Change (TTM). A web-based CTI modified for a veteran population will be used to pilot test the effectiveness of the CTI alone and CTI plus individualized text messaging enhancements. The pilot study is a randomized controlled trial to assess the cell phone's feasibility as an intervention modality for changing smoking behaviors. This will be the first study to adapt a smoking cessation Internet-based CTI to provide personalized feedback on a cell phone to reduce smoking behaviors in military veterans.
The primary objective of this study is to test a manualized adaptation of positive psychotherapy (PPT) for smoking cessation (PPT-S). The investigators will conduct a preliminary randomized clinical trial (N = 80) to examine the feasibility, acceptability, and efficacy of PPT-S over 26 weeks of follow up in comparison to a standard smoking cessation treatment. Both treatments will be delivered in individual 6 sessions over 6 weeks, and will include provision of transdermal nicotine patch. The effect size estimates from this Stage 1b research will provide the foundation for a future application to conduct a large-scale, Stage II, randomized clinical trial.
The goal of this project is to evaluate the effectiveness of a family-based tobacco use prevention intervention directed at immigrant Latino parents of middle school aged youth as delivered in partnership with seven community organizations. The primary outcomes of the study are youth susceptibility to tobacco use, and changes in parenting practices among the parents of the youth. The planning, initiation, and delivery of the intervention will occur in collaboration with community organizations that have identified this project as important to the families they serve. Though the collaboratively designed training curriculum has been successfully tested and a study design for the current project established, a substantive development period for this project will allow the research team and collaborating organizations to consider key aspects of design and delivery.
Evaluation to determine if auto-induction can be used as a surrogate measure of nicotine receptor up-regulation through an observational study using nicotine replacement therapy for two weeks and no intervention for two weeks.
The purpose of the study is to see if a short seminar educating physicians about smoking cessation counselling will effectively improve their smoking counselling cessation practices.
This study will examine the efficacy of mailed distribution of free Nicotine Replacement Therapy to smokers. Telephone numbers will be randomly selected from across Canada in order to recruit adult smokers interested in completing a smoking survey and willing to be interviewed again in 8 weeks and 6 months time. Study participants will be asked about their smoking history and a hypothetical question: would they be interested in receiving the nicotine patch if this were to be provided to them free of charge? Participants expressing interest will be randomly assigned to one of two groups. One group will be offered the opportunity to actually receive a program of 5 weeks of the nicotine patch for free right away and the other group will not be offered the free nicotine patches. The proportions of smokers in the two groups who quit smoking by the 6-month interview will be compared.
This study will consist of 2 phases. Phase 1 will be a one day crossover study to see the effects of study product on a smoker's desire to smoke, measured by changes in scores on questionnaires given over time. Phase 2 will be a two-week extension, in which subjects will self-administer the study product and visit the study site for assessment of desire to smoke and collection of samples for the evaluation of smoking-related biomarkers.
The objective of this project is to develop and implement sophisticated point-of-care Electronic Health Record (EHR)-based clinical decision support that (a) identifies and (b) prioritizes all available evidence-based treatment options to reduce a given patient's cardiovascular risk (CVR). After developing the EHR-based decision support intervention, the investigators will test its impact on CVR, the components of CVR, in a group randomized trial that includes 18 primary care clinics, 60 primary care physicians, and 18,000 adults with moderate or high CVR. This approach, if successful, will (a) improve chronic disease outcomes and reduce CVR for about 35% of the U.S. adult population, (b) maximize the clinical return on the massive investments that are increasingly being made in sophisticated outpatient EHR systems, and (c) provide a model for how to use EHR technology support to deliver "personalized medicine" in primary care settings
