This project aims to deliver an evidence-based smoking cessation intervention comprising the provision of brief cessation advice to smokers attending emergency departments and active referral to existing smoking cessation services. The objectives are as follows: 1. To promote this evidence-based project to emergency departments in various hospitals under the Hospital Authority 2. To construct a network with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to provide smoking cessation services 3. To train healthcare professionals to use the AWARD model to deliver brief cessation advice to smokers 4. To deliver brief cessation advice via healthcare professionals and actively refer smokers to existing smoking cessation services.
To examine the effects on participants who play the smokeSCREEN game in that the game will have positive changes in their attitudes, beliefs, knowledge, intentions, behaviors and other outcomes related to smoking and tobacco products.
The purpose of this study is to determine whether a brief smoking ENT-resident-based intervention increased smoking cessation in patients with Head and Neck cancer attending a Lebanese university hospital, as compared with usual care.
This study will evaluate the degree to which engaging targets produces a desired change in medical regimen adherence (across 4-week interventions) and health behavior among smokers (n=50) and overweight/obese persons with binge eating disorder (n=50) (smoking in the former sample and binge eating in the latter sample). The investigators will employ a novel mobile behavioral assessment/intervention platform to engage targets in these samples, given that (1) it offers self-regulation assessment and behavior change tools via an integrated platform to a wide array of populations, and (2) content within the platform can be quickly modified as needed to better impact targets. This is the fourth and final phase of a study that aims to identify putative mechanisms of behavior change to develop an overarching "ontology" of self-regulatory processes. The purpose of this study is to learn what happens when people are given a free, 4-week, sample of varenicline, a smoking cessation medication. Investigators will look at quit attempts, changes in smoking, and attitude towards varenicline, in both smokers who want to quit and those who do not. Smoking use causes a number of deaths and diseases, including heart disease and cancer. All smokers are advised to quit. Varenicline (sometimes called Chantix), is a prescription medication approved by the US FDA. Many studies show that use of varenicline can help smokers quit smoking. Varenicline is a prescription medication, which usually means that people have to see a doctor to get it. This study examines a different way to deliver varenicline, delivered directly to participants for a few weeks, and without need to see a doctor. This method is called "varenicline sampling." The study is sponsored by the Hollings Cancer Center at the Medical University of South Carolina. The study is being done at the Medical University of South Carolina, but study recruitment is based state-wide, throughout South Carolina.
The main objective of this study is to show that the repeated (twice-daily) measurement of expired CO during hospitalization helps reduce smoking.
The goal of this sub-study is to learn more about how an educational videogame can feasibly be implemented and disseminated in youth programs.
While e-cigs are commonly represented as safer alternatives to tobacco cigarettes, little is known regarding the health effects of their short- or long-term use. The responses and the e-cig components exerting these effects on the airways are largely unknown. This study will identify if specific e-cig flavors modify respiratory immune responses. This study will determine the effects of cinnamaldehyde (CA)-containing e-cigarettes on airway epithelial cell ciliary function (i.e., MCC) in humans. Additionally the study will determine the effects of CA-containing e-cigarettes on airway immune cells obtained through induced sputum (SI) after inhalation of CA-containing e-cig aerosols to determine CA-induced effects on a) immune cell function (e.g., phagocytosis, respiratory burst), b) immune cell surface phenotype, and c) mediator production in humans in vivo.
The purpose of this study is to look at the effects of investigational low nicotine cigarettes on young adult smokers. The investigators are interested in how using these products affects young adults' perceptions and smoking behaviors. This research may help inform the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) how best to regulate tobacco products in the future with the goal of improving public health.
