Filter by:The general practitioner is confronted with unselected smokers whose attempts to quit smoking are often repeated over time before leading to a definitive cessation. Each year, 3-5% of smokers succeed in quitting in the general population. The corollary is that the majority of smokers are in a situation of failure in their attempt to quit: 33% declared during the 2019 French Health Barometer to have made an attempt of at least 7 days in the past year. Thus, this status of "smoker" can cover a wide variety of situations: no attempt to stop smoking, attempt(s) of more or less clinical significance, previous support or not by a health professional, etc. Currently, the HAS recommendations do not determine a specific course of action for these smokers, whose experiences may be very different. It could therefore be interesting to objectivize the smoking cessation process of these patients who have or have not succeeded in quitting, in order to deduce profiles of smokers according to their previous smoking cessation experiences. Furthermore, the choice and relevance of the cessation criteria used are debated. Following the randomized controlled trial DISCO on COPD screening interventions in primary care (3 intervention arms, 1 control arm), the investigators will carry out a pilot cross-sectional survey on the cessation process of smokers during the 2 years following their participation, evaluating the incidence and modalities of cessation attempts of smokers belonging to an age group at risk of COPD (40-80 years) and who initially consulted their general practitioner for any reason 2 years ago at the time of their inclusion. The impact on future management could be the personalization of cessation advice given to smokers according to quantitative and qualitative indicators specific to their experience, their previous history of smoking cessation, their health situation and socio-demographic characteristics. Eventually, a gradation of the levels of support offered to patients in general practice on the basis of predictive factors of smoking cessation could be studied. The investigators hypothesize that participation in COPD screening with the GP may be associated with patient progress in quitting smoking. This pilot study will be conducted on a random sample of 120 participants from the subgroup of 544 patients who were smokers at inclusion in DISCO.

The overall goal of this pilot study is to evaluate the feasibility of the Lumme smartphone app for smoking cessation in people living with HIV (PLWH) and evaluate its effect on smoking cessation. Mobile health (mHealth) technology can be used for achieving health equity in vulnerable groups because it is a widely available and relatively inexpensive tool for health behavior change and can be adapted to meet the needs of its end-users. Therefore, a mHealth intervention such as the Lumme App proposed through this study is timely, relevant, scalable and likely to improve health outcomes in PLWH who smoke.
This project will be conducted to investigate activities on housing-related health and safety issues. The focus of this project is the development of evidence-based approaches to implement smoke-free policies to reduce harms associated with exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS).
The purpose of this randomized controlled pilot study is to test whether an in-hospital nurse-led smoking cessation intervention increases the refferal rate to healty life-centers in the municipalities. We will also describe the proportion who succeed in quitting smoking between the intervention group and the control group and obtain new knowledge about the patient and system factors of importance for participation to healty life-centers and for successful and unsuccessful smoking cessation.
Cigarette smoking remains one of the leading causes of preventable death. Effective smoking cessation medications exist but use of these treatments is low, making it difficult for most to quit smoking. Behavioral interventions are needed to engage current smokers in the process of quitting smoking and promote the use of evidence-based cessation medications. At the same time, genetics influences one's smoking behaviors (e.g., how much they smoke, difficulty quitting) and risk of smoking-related diseases, yet these personalized factors have not been included in existing behavioral interventions. Incorporating these individualized factors into smoking cessation interventions may make them more personally engaging and thus motivating for treatment. This study will pilot test a risk communication tool that is personalized to one's genetics and will demonstrate the feasibility of a larger trial to test the effect of this personalized genetically-informed intervention on smoking cessation.
The study will evaluate a sustainable tobacco screening, treatment intervention, and cessation program implemented within both Los Angeles County (LAC)-Department of Health Services (LACDHS)-operated outpatient primary care clinics and in LAC-Department of Mental Health (LACDMH)-operated community mental health clinics. This is a three year implementation study funded by the University of California Office of the President Tobacco Related Disease Research Program (TRDRP). This project will support the implementation of smoking cessation services delivered in LACDHS and LACDMH clinics and will evaluate the effectiveness and feasibility of these services.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of contingency management on improving smoking cessation among individuals with type 2 diabetes.
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is caused primarily by smoking and smoking cessation is the first-line treatment for slowing disease progression. Despite this, nearly 50% of COPD patients continue to smoke following diagnosis. Smokers with COPD report high rates of co-occurring conditions - nicotine dependence, depression, and anxiety - which serve as barriers to quitting. The current study will pilot test a behavioral intervention designed to target the common psychological factors underlying these co-occurring conditions and foster smoking cessation among COPD patients.
The recorded prevalence of daily smoking among health professionals (doctors, nurses, midwives, etc.), regardless of their mode of practice (salaried or self-employed, etc.) varies between 14 and 23%. In health care institutions, according to the studies, the prevalence of daily smoking among staff, caregivers and non-caregivers ranges from 17% to 27%. These professionals who continue to smoke, although they are particularly well informed about the risks they run, probably constitute a group with specific withdrawal difficulties. Beyond the impact on their own health, the smoking status of caregivers could also have an impact on the management of tobacco patients. There are very few studies of the impact of interventions on the smoking status of caregivers in health care facilities. The combination of several intervention modalities can facilitate the participation of target professionals and generate efficiency synergies.
