Use of Shade in U.S. and Australian City Parks

Use of shade when outdoors is recommended by health authorities worldwide to reduce overall exposure to ultraviolet radiation. However, expensive physical environment changes are often required to provide shade and may be effective only when health education has created a social environment that motivate shade use. A multi-national research team will explore the use of built shade in passive recreation areas within public parks and compare use of built shade between the United States and Australia. The specific aims of the project are to: a) introduce built shade structures (i.e., shade sails) in public parks in Denver and Melbourne; b) compare the use of passive recreation areas with and without built shade; c) compare the change in use of the passive recreation areas in Denver and Melbourne after introduction of built shade, and d) examine the relationship among social environment and physical features of the environment and built shade.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate if the treatment with NEO-PV-01 + adjuvant in combination with nivolumab is safe and useful for patients with certain types of cancer. The study also will investigate if NEO-PV-01 + adjuvant with nivolumab may represent a substantial improvement over other available therapies such as nivolumab alone. All eligible patients will receive NEO-PV-01 + adjuvant and nivolumab while on this trial.

Engaging Moms on Teen Indoor Tanning Through Social Media

A sample of mothers in Tennessee are recruited to a group-randomized pretest-posttest controlled trial evaluating the effect of a social media campaign to decrease mothers' permissiveness for daughters to indoor tan. The primary outcomes is mothers' permissiveness for indoor tanning by daughters. Secondary outcomes are mother's indoor tanning prevalence and their support for stricter bans on indoor tanning by minors.

Multimodal Spectroscopy (MMS) for in Vivo Noninvasive Assessment of Skin

The goal of this research program is to develop a simple, noninvasive diagnostic device for assessing skin pathology without the need for a biopsy. The device being studied is a single system capable of collecting three spectroscopy measurements (Raman, diffuse reflectance and laser induced fluorescence spectroscopy) from skin lesion sites. In order to accomplish this objective, the investigators propose to: 1) develop biophysical model for Raman spectroscopy of skin cancers, 2) conduct a clinical pilot study to collect MMS data from a minimum of 250 patients to determine the diagnostic accuracy (sensitivity and specificity) of MMS for diagnosing skin malignancy.

The researcher can proved that certain compounds play an important role in the prevention of skin cancer. Researcher can use specific compounds, which classified as metabolic enzymes, and lower concentrations and complete absent in skin cancer cells. Researcher can biopsies of normal skin and precancerous or cancerous lesions, and can compare the concentrations of these compounds to determine the difference between the two areas. The result can lead to further understanding of skin cancers and pre-cancers. Because skin cancers and pre-cancers are so common, any knowledge would be very useful for many people in the future and may be used for development of future treatments or prevention strategies.
