Filter by:Every year thousands of dermatologic surgery procedures are performed at the University of Missouri Department of Dermatology, including Mohs Micrographic Surgery (MMS), Excisions, and biopsies. Surgery is known to cause anxiety for patients and with these procedures performed under local anesthetic on awake patients', the sights, sounds, and smells experienced during the procedure can lead to an increase in their anxiety or affect their overall perception of the experience. From performing and assisting with dermatologic surgery the noise associated with the use of the traditional curved Iris scissors provokes an increase in patient awareness to the procedure resulting in increased anxiety, triggering of the vasovagal response, and expressions of annoyance by the patient. However, the modified curved Iris scissors make almost no noise. The Investigators hypothesize that if patients were given the comparative experience of both types of curved Iris scissors during dermatologic surgery, then they will choose the modified curved Iris scissors because the lack of noise will be perceived as more pleasant experience. Our objective is to perform a prospective, single blinded, randomized controlled trial to determine how the noise of traditional curved Iris scissors vs the silent Wuennenberg modified curved Iris scissors affects patients during dermatologic surgery.
The overall goal of this research is to develop a platform that can increase patient access to expert skin cancer diagnostic services via telemedicine. This is especially important for medically underserved areas where melanoma outcomes are worse than in areas with greater access to in-person evaluations. If successful, the widespread availability of such services would be combined with public education efforts to encourage individuals with changing skin lesions to seek evaluation. With decreased travel times to high quality diagnostic services, such efforts may decrease the diagnosis of more advanced melanomas (with a concomitant increase in the diagnosis of earlier stage tumors), and potentially decrease melanoma mortality.
To evaluate the suitability of two odour capturing techniques for early detection of skin cancer.
A prospective randomized within-subject controlled study to compare the clinical performance of conventional autografting with and without the RECELL system on acute non-burn full-thickness skin defects.
A completely new type of digital dermatoscope has been developed in order to take a significant step forward in technology for skin cancer imaging. By means of this study a better insight can be gained of the current performance and workflow in clinical dermatoscopy. This knowledge will be used to further improve the developed technology.
The study is designed to be able to prove if the Molemap Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithm can be used as a diagnostic aid in a clinical setting. This study will determine whether the diagnostic accuracy of the Molemap AI algorithm is comparable to a specialist dermatologist, teledermatologist and registrar (as a surrogate for a general practitioner). The study patient population will be adult patients who require skin cancer assessment. The use of AI as a diagnostic aid may assist primary care physicians who have variable skill in skin cancer diagnosis and lead to more appropriate referrals (rapid referral for lesions requiring treatment and fewer referrals for benign lesions), thereby improving access and reducing waiting times for specialist care.
This single-blind, randomized controlled trial studies how well inhaled essential oils work for common quality of life concerns in patients who are undergoing cancer treatment such as chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and/or immunotherapy given through the vein (intravenously). Aromatherapy using essential oils, such as ginger essential oil, German chamomile essential oil, and bergamot essential oil, may improve quality of life issues such as nausea, anxiety, loss of appetite, and fatigue in patients undergoing treatment for cancer.
The purpose of this research is to develop a social media delivered intervention to reduce unprotected sun exposure in young adults with a history of tanning.
The investigators aim to recruit 311 participants to this study from three UK Dermatology departments. The investigators will invite people with suspected skin cancers whose lesions have a broken surface (also known as ulcerated) who will undergo surgery. This study is being carried out because it is possible that patients with skin cancers with ulceration might be at greater risk of developing a wound infection after surgery. The aim of this study is to determine how many people with ulcerated skin cancers develop an infection of the wound after it has been surgically removed. People with ulcerated skin cancers who will have surgery will be invited to participate in the study. If they agree, a member of the research team will explain the study and consent them to participate in the study. At the time of surgery, information will be collected about the participant, skin tumour and procedure. The participant will be given standardised advice regarding wound care and further care will be as per each centre's 'normal clinical care'. If participants are diagnosed with a wound infection then they will asked to take a 'wound selfie' and share the photo with the research team. The research team will contact the participant via a postal questionnaire which will be sent four weeks after the procedure to determine whether they had any concerns about post-operative infection and whether any action was taken. Additionally, all participants at the University Hospital of Wales will have a surface swab taken from their ulcerated skin cancer and these will be analysed in the Public Health Wales laboratory at the University of Wales, Cardiff. The aim of this aspect of the study is to identify the most common bacteria in ulcerated tumours.
INTRODUCTION: The axillary lymphadenectomy procedure is known to be associated with late postoperative complications, such as chronic pain and changes in shoulder mobility. Recently, several thoracic ultrasound guided interfascial blocks have been described, including serratus plane block. These blocks were associated with reduced postoperative pain scores in breast surgeries but were never evaluated in axillary dissection. The safety and feasibility of performing axillary dissection under local anesthesia and tumescent anesthesia associated with sedation has been demonstrated in case series, although it is not already the standard technique. DISCUSSION: This project aims to investigate the feasibility of the serratus plane block associated with intra-venous sedation in a prospective case series including 15 patients submitted to axillary dissection, by scoring patient and surgeon satisfaction with the technique, pain, quality of life with EORTC QLQ-C30 questionnaire, and quality of recovery with QoR-40 questionnaire in the first 30 postoperative days.
