Tension of THERABAND® Kinesiology Tape on Shoulder Pain

The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of standard tension of Thera-Band® Kinesiological Tape (TB-KT) application versus varied tension on shoulder pain, disability, and recovery speed during an in-office rehabilitative program. A convenience sample size of 38 new patients with current shoulder pain will be recruited for this study. The outcome measures will include the Numeric Pain Rating Scale (NPRS) and the Penn Shoulder Score (PENN). After completing the initial paperwork, patients will be randomized into two groups, control (0% tension) and intervention(increasing tension). At the beginning of each week the tape will be reapplied, and pain rating will be recorded. At the conclusion of 4 weeks patients will complete the PENN.

Psychomotor Therapy as Complimentary Treatment to Patients With Shoulder Pain.

Some patients with shoulder pain have decreased body awareness (BA). To some degree, pain among these patients can be increased due to their lack in BA. Psychomotor therapy is thought to improve BA and thereby increase the effect of traditional therapy, such as physiotherapy and exercises. The aim of this study is therefore to investigate if psychomotor therapy, as a complimenting treatment to physiotherapy, decreases shoulder patients' function deficits and pain reported on PRO's, compared to physiotherapy alone.

Biopsychosocial Influence on Shoulder Pain

Chronic shoulder pain is a common, costly, and disabling problem for society. The identification of factors predictive of the development of chronic shoulder pain is necessary to develop innovative and effective treatments to reduce the societal impact of shoulder disorders. In previous work the investigators identified a genetic and psychological subgroup that robustly predicted heightened shoulder pain responses in a pre-clinical cohort and poor 12 month shoulder pain recovery rates in a clinical surgical cohort. In this follow-up study the investigator proposes to test how interventions tailored to the high risk subgroup affect pain responses in a pre-clinical cohort. The optimal theorized match for the identified high-risk subgroup is a combination of personalized pharmaceutical and education interventions. This combined personalized intervention versus a placebo pharmaceutical and general education intervention group is the primary comparison of interest. Also, an evaluation of the individual effect of personalized pharmaceutical and educational interventions will be part of the study. Such comparisons will provide important information on what the active portion of the combined personalized intervention may be.

US-guided Percutaneous Electrolysis (EPE®) in Shoulder Pain

Scientific evidence of conservative management of subacromial pain syndrome is conflicting. There is evidence that eccentric exercise programs are effective at medium term for this pain condition. The inclusion of other therapeutic modalities is still controversial. A recent study suggests that the inclusion of US-guided percutaneous electrolysis combined with eccentric exercises can be effective at short-term for this condition. The objective of this randomized clinical trial is to determine the effectiveness at short- and long-term of the inclusion of US-guided percutaneous electrolysis (EPE®) into a eccentric exercise protocol for the management of patients with subacromial pain syndrome for pain, function, disability and pressure pain sensitivity.

About 70% of hemiplegic patients suffer from hemiplegic shoulder pain after stroke. This common occurrence is a cause for concern in the rehabilitation setting as it leads to impairment of functional outcomes induced by discomfort and delays in rehabilitation, important psycho-emotional repercussions as there is a correlation between upper arm pain and depression, a longer hospital stay. Poor management of hemiplegic shoulder pain can ultimately give rise to type 1 "complex regional pain syndrome" (CRPS I). There is no consensus on treatment, care pathways or useful devices for positioning acute stroke patients in the literature. Our objective is to compare the effectiveness of a new positioning procedure of the hemiplegic arm with conventional positioning (pillow and "shoulder-immobilisation" sling) in acute stroke patients. Patient's actions are focus in 4 points: - Positioning in bed, wheelchair and standing with specific materials (holds, sling in external rotation and abduction) - Be careful of shoulder's coaptation in care and functional activities (toilet, dressing, transfers) - A training of the patient and members of family on pathology, risk, use of material - Daily passive mobilisation of the upper member by a therapist.
