Filter by:It is clear that the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted families adversely in multiple ways, including economic stressors, mental health-related functioning, social/familial functioning, as well as responses to mandated safety measures (e.g. social distancing, stay-at-home orders, mask-wearing). Furthermore, families of school-age children have had to navigate online instruction and home schooling in the context of these difficult circumstances with little preparation for doing so effectively. School districts have varied widely in their ability to support parents during this crisis. These stressors are likely to have disproportionately adverse effects on lower-income and racial/ ethnic minority populations, for whom economic, academic, and family-level challenges were already pronounced. For instance, health effects of COVID-19 have hit African American and Latinx populations with disproportionate severity, including higher rates of hospitalization and death. Given the scale of pandemic impacts for families with school-aged children, the identification of effective family-focused interventions that target core mechanisms of change with a broad range of benefits for parents and youth across diverse populations, and that can be brought to scale rapidly and with fidelity, represent critical public health goals. In this research study the investigators will adapt and test the efficacy of the Family Check-Up Online as a treatment to foster resilient family functioning in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The investigators will test the effects of the adapted FCU Online program on key mechanisms of change that are predicted to directly impact child and family functioning: parenting skills, parental depression, and parent and child self-regulation. The investigators predict that changes in these key targets of the intervention will impact participant's response to the COVID-19 pandemic, including youth depression and behavior problems, the ability to cope with pandemic-focused stressors, and social/familial functioning.
This study aims to examine the relationship among cognitive fatigue, self-regulation, and academic performance.
Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and intellectual disability (ID) are the most frequently diagnosed disability in children, accounting for 7% to 14% of children in developed countries. Developmental concerns emerge early, providing an opportunity to support families years before a diagnosis may occur. Emerging concerns are often predictive of problems with self-regulation, risky behaviours (e.g., substance abuse and over-eating), academic achievement, social functioning, parent-child relationship, and lower overall quality of life. Overall family wellbeing is also commonly affected given the increased challenges faced by parents and caregivers, including socioeconomic disadvantage. Parents facing hurdles to positive parenting, such as poor psychological wellbeing, may struggle further with parenting capacity in the context of the increased parenting demands of caring for a child with specific needs. The objective of this study is to create a novel adaptation of an existing program that is targeted at improving the mental wellness and parenting practices of caregivers (mothers, fathers, guardians) with elevated symptoms of depression who have 3 to 8-year-old children with emerging behavioural, emotional, or developmental concerns. It is hypothesized that taking a dual-generation intervention approach to addressing self-regulatory mechanisms underlying psychopathology at the level of the caregiver, child, and dyad (i.e. parenting interactions) will improve both caregiver capacities and child outcomes. Further, it is hypothesized that this novel adaptation of the program will be tailored to meet the identified needs of this demographic and that the program will show improvement in psychosocial, emotional, and parenting function compared to a services as usual control group. Our current study will be conducted remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic to adhere to public health guidelines to reduce in-person contact and physical distance. The ultimate goal of this project is to improve parent wellbeing and promote supportive parenting practices that allow children with early developmental needs to reach their full potential.
Families who experience maternal mental illness and a variety of chronic stressors are currently underserved by the parenting programs. The investigators propose that impairments in maternal self-regulation, which result in unsupportive parenting, directly impact children's own self-regulation and neurobiology, leading to risk for intergenerational transmission of mental illness. The objective of this study is to develop and evaluate a program that is targeted at improving underlying self-regulatory mechanisms in both mothers with depression and their 3 to 5-year-old children. It is hypothesized that children exposed to maternal mental illness will have greater self-regulatory deficits across emotional and behavioural domains, compared to children not exposed to mental illness. The effects of maternal mental illness are expected to be compounded for children of mothers reporting a higher degree of chronic stressors, including poverty, housing instability, violence, and low social support. Further, it is hypothesized that taking a dual-generation intervention approach to addressing self-regulatory mechanisms underlying psychopathology at the level of the mother, child, and dyad (i.e. parenting interactions) will improve both maternal capacities and child outcomes. The objectives for this study are to 1) establish a better understanding of the self-regulatory processes that are altered in preschool-aged children exposed to maternal mental illness, and determine the mediating role of parenting behaviours, as well as the moderating impact of chronic stress exposure; and 2) develop and evaluate a novel dual-generation intervention for mothers with mental illness and their 3 to 5-year-old children based on existing gold-standard evidence-based approaches.

This study will evaluate whether the intervention, Mom Power, improves the self-regulation of mothers with a history of trauma and their children. The central hypothesis is that the intervention will shift behavioral and physiological self-regulation in mothers, children, and dyads to mitigate psychopathology risk.
Stressful and traumatic experiences in childhood (Adverse Childhood Events, or ACEs) have been associated with poor health outcomes that extend into adulthood. When stress is sustained or severe in the absence of an adequate buffer, the stress response can become dysregulated--a state referred to as toxic stress. Some professional organizations have advocated for ACEs screening to be part of routine medical care. To date, however, no ACEs screening tool has been validated for use with children. Intervening early at critical points in the life course has the potential to allow a child to avoid the negative consequences of these adverse events. The proposed study has three overarching aims: (1) Examine the relationship between ACEs, stress biomarkers, and symptoms in children and caregivers over time; (2) Validate an ACEs screening in a pediatric health care setting; and (3) Test whether providing primary care-based preventive interventions for children with or at risk for toxic stress can lead to detectable changes in biomarkers, behavior, or health outcomes for children and/or caregivers.
In African-Americans, the incidence of type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is ~14%. Adherence to crucial diabetes self-management (DSM) behaviors, such as engaging in physical activity (PA) is dangerously low among AA women living in disadvantaged neighborhoods. These women manage numerous chronic challenges (daily discrimination, poverty, and violence), which drain the internal energy needed for DSM. The ability to self-regulate (modify one's behaviors based on the requirements of a situation) has been associated with adherence to health behaviors, including diet and PA. This 6-week ecological momentary intervention (EMI) feasibility study has been developed to reduce energy needs of DSM through use of self-regulation strategies delivered in real-time, in the real-world setting. Twenty-six AA women will receive personalized diabetes education over two days. They will be given a personalized activity prescription and a Fitbit wrist activity monitor. During the following two weeks, they will get a personal continuous glucose monitor (CGM) and individualized "cue cards" for simple behaviors they can try when glucose levels are too high. The intervention is grounded in self-regulation theory, and targets core self-regulation components, including self-monitoring/assessment, mental contrasting of target values with actual values, and goal-setting/review. The aim for this application is to Determine the feasibility and acceptability of an ecological momentary intervention, consisting of continuous glucose monitoring, activity tracking, and personalized cue cards with behavioral choices (eating/activity) driven by the results of glucose levels. Impact: Real-time feedback on the effects of activity and eating behaviors will enable patients to make choices and see results immediately. Our intervention will offer low-income African-American women opportunities to enact behaviors in their momentary environment, and will encourage autonomous motivation for PA uptake, and improving blood glucose control. Findings from this study will have an important positive impact on our ability to create tailored, EMIs among low-income adults who have limited access to diabetes specialty care and education.
The proposed study will examine two different intervention programs and whether they improve self-regulation of adopted children. The study is a small randomized controlled trial to test the feasibility of conducting a larger, R01-funded clinical trial. Outcomes will primarily be focused on feasibility concerns, such as recruitment and retention of a sufficient number of participants and implementation of treatment protocols with fidelity, as well as determining initial effect size estimates that might inform later power analyses and examining the functioning of developmental assessment measures when administered in the context of a clinical trial.
Overweight/obesity and inadequate sleep are prevalent, and frequently co-occurring, health risks among children, both of which are associated with serious medical and psychosocial health complications including risk for cardiovascular disease. Although the investigator's data suggest that disrupted or shortened sleep may be causally associated with increased energy intake and weight gain in children, and with self-regulation and neural response to food cues in adults, understanding of mechanisms involved in the sleep/eating association is incomplete, thereby impeding development of targeted, optimally timed intervention strategies. The proposed mechanistic clinical trial aims to assess the effects of an experimental sleep manipulation on eating-related self-regulation and its neural substrates, and on real-world eating behavior, among children with overweight/obesity, which will help guide research efforts towards the refinement of prevention and intervention strategies targeting sleep and its eating-related correlates to curb weight gain throughout development.
