Combined Effects of Prolonged Sitting and Mental Stress on the Cardiovascular System

Prolonged sitting may pose a public health risk through its effects on the cardiovascular system, and may lead to impaired whole-body cardiovascular health, which includes both vascular and cerebrovascular function. These effects may interact with other environmental variables, such as stress. However, no study has investigated the combined effect of a mental stressor and prolonged sitting on vascular and cerebrovascular function. The combined effect of prolonged sitting and mental stress may lead to an exacerbated effect on vascular, cerebrovascular, and executive function. The investigators hypothesize that mental stress with the addition of prolonged sitting [PS] will result in a greater increase in peripheral, central and cerebral arterial stiffness and elicit a decrease in cerebral perfusion, total blood flow to the brain, middle cerebral artery velocity and executive function, compared to mental stress without prolonged sitting [CON]. The findings from this study may result in a public health message regarding sedentary behavior and stress, and will help elucidate the mechanisms behind acute vascular, cerebrovascular, and cognitive dysfunction during prolonged sitting.

Effects of Physical Inactivity on Insulin Sensitivity, Appetite, Energy Balance, and Cardiovascular Responses in Humans.

Physical inactivity is a significant predictor of major non-communicable diseases such as type 2 diabetes (7%), cardiovascular disease (6%), musculoskeletal disorders and some cancers, and has been proposed to be the 4th leading cause of death worldwide. Reduced physical activity leads to an impaired function of the hormone insulin and increased adiposity. Thus, the elimination of physical inactivity would remove between 6% and 10% of the major non-communicable diseases and increase life expectancy. The aim of the study is to investigate the effects of a short-term (2-day) period of reduced physical activity, with and without a proportional decrease in energy intake, on the action of insulin to regulate blood sugar fluctuations, appetite, and cardiovascular parameters (heart rate, cardiac output, stroke volume, blood flow, arterial blood pressure, peripheral vascular resistance) in response to food ingestion.

Workplace Wellness: Improving Your Experience at Work

The primary objective of study was to compare affective (i.e., highlighted emotional benefits), instrumental (i.e., highlighted other health benefits), and self-regulation (i.e., demonstrated ways to plan, set goals, etc.) interventions in terms of their ability to motivate less sitting in the workplace. Research of this type is important because people sit for long periods of time at work which adversely affects their health and productivity. It was hypothesized that the affective and self-regulation groups would sit less than the instrumental and control groups based on evidence indicating that affective attitude (i.e., emotional evaluation of the behavior) and self-regulation techniques tend to predict behavior.

An Intervention to Reduce Prolonged Sitting in Police Staff

The primary aim of this study is to assess the feasibility of an intervention to reduce and break up prolonged sitting time in full-time police staff. The secondary aims of this study are to assess preliminary effects on patterns of sedentary behaviour (number of breaks, number of prolonged sitting bouts, average duration of prolonged sitting bouts, and total prolonged sitting duration), additional measures of sedentary behaviour (total sitting time, standing, and stepping), cardiometabolic risk markers, physiological stress (cortisol levels), physical health (self-report and postural stability), psychological wellbeing and mood, work stress (self-reported), and work performance (job satisfaction and productivity).

Residential MapTrek- Increasing Physical Activity Among Older Adults in a Residential-Living

Older adults are a growing population, with projections to reach 83.7 million by 2050. Furthermore, older adults are the most sedentary and least physically active adult population. It is estimated that nearly 90% of older adults 65 years of age or older do not meet the recommended levels of physical activity. Evidence suggests great health benefits can be achieved for older adults who are the most sedentary, and that replacing sitting with even light intensity walking can be beneficial. The overarching goal of the project is to develop an inexpensive and scalable tool to increase volume of physical activity in our target population, older adults living in a residential facility. MapTrek is a web-based application that allows participants to take a virtual walk in interesting locations around the world while tracking their progress against the progress of other older adults living in a retirement community. Steps are counted using a commercially available accelerometer (e.g., Fitbit), and participants see their progress overlaid on Google Maps.

Kids FIRST: Family-based Intervention to Reduce Snacking and Screen Time in Children

Kids FIRST was a 12-week, four arm, home- and school-based pilot randomised controlled trial to reduce screen-time and unhealthy snacking with assessments at pre- (baseline) and post-intervention. Four UK schools were randomised to control or one of three interventions - Group 1: targeting reductions in screen-time and unhealthy snacking (ST+Sn), Group 2: targeting reductions in screen-time only (ST), Group 3: targeting reductions in unhealthy snacking only (Sn). Intervention group parents received four online 'sessions' and four packages of resources which were tailored to each intervention group and focused on specific mediators of screen-time and/or unhealthy snacking. Children received four 30-minute lessons during school time, followed by homework activities/challenges. Children and parents reported their own screen-time behaviours, children reported their own snacking behaviours, and completed questionnaires on individual, behavioural, social and physical home environmental variables. Descriptive analyses were undertaken using principles of intention to treat.
