Safety and Efficacy of Allogenic Adoptive Immune Therapy for Advanced AIDS Patients

Safety and Efficacy of Allogenic Adoptive Immune Therapy for Advanced AIDS Patients

Combined antiretroviral therapy (cART) efficiently suppress viral replication in majority of AIDS patients. The morbidity and mortality of the disease has dramatically decreased over the past 20 years. However, chronic human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) infection lead to profound immune defects in some advanced AIDS patients who often develop with severe opportunistic infections (OIs), severe cachexia and other deadly complications, which accounts for the major death group even under cART. Up-to-date, there are no effective immune interventions to restore host holistic immunity for advanced AIDS patients.

PHAT Life: Preventing HIV/AIDS Among Teens in Juvenile Justice - PHAT Life

PHAT Life: Preventing HIV/AIDS Among Teens in Juvenile Justice

PHAT Life: Preventing HIV/AIDS Among Teens, is a uniquely-tailored intervention designed for recently-arrested juvenile offenders on probation. The program will teach teens about HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted infections, and safer decision-making. The PHAT Life Research Study is a 2-arm randomized controlled trial of the PHAT Life Intervention. The investigators will test and compare PHAT Life to the health promotion control group on adolescent risky sexual behavior, substance use, and theoretical mediators.

Pre-Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) Cryptococcal Antigen Screening in AIDS - PreCASA

Implementation and Evaluation of a Screening Strategy to Reduce Morbidity and Mortality Due to Cryptoccocal Meningo-encephalitis in ART Naive AIDS Patients With <100 CD4 Count at the Day Hospital of the Yaounde Central Hospital, Cameroon

The aim of the study is to evaluate systematic pre-antiretroviral cryptococcal antigen screening and pre-emptive fluconazole therapy in antigen positive patients, as a strategy to reduce morbidity and mortality due to AIDS associated cryptococcal meningitis in patients starting antiretroviral therapy at <100 CD4 in Cameroon.

SSRI Effects on Depression and Immunity in HIV/AIDS

SSRI Effects on Depression and Immunity in HIV/AIDS

This is a 10 week, double-blind, placebo controlled trial to evaluate SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) effects for treatment of depression in HIV/AIDS with a focus on innate immunity and inflammation. Depressed population is HIV + on cART (Combination Antiretroviral Therapy), not currently on pharmacotherapy for depression. Subjects will complete computerized cognitive behavior therapy, CCBT for their depression. Blood samples collected for virologic, neuroendocrine, and immunologic evaluation. Our overarching hypothesis is that SSRI treatment of depression and improvement of depressive symptoms leads to increased innate immunity and decreased inflammation, resulting in better control of HIV disease and decreased morbidity.

WelTelOAKTREE: Text Messaging to Support Patients With HIV/AIDS in British Columbia - WelTelOAKTREE

WelTelOAKTREE: Text Messaging to Support Patients With HIV/AIDS in British Columbia

WelTel Oak Tree is a repeated measures study that enrolled 85 HIV+ individuals from the Oak Tree Clinic at BC Women's Hospital. Participants were be provided with a cell phone and/or unlimited text messaging capability if they do not have it already, and for one year received a weekly text message stating "How are you". Participant problems and non-responses were be followed up by a nurse. Data on demographics, CD4 counts, HIV viral loads, HIV medication adherence and attendance at appointments was collected for the year prior to the intervention and during the intervention for comparison. Data assessing quality of life was also collected at three points during the one year study period. Cost effectiveness and cost benefit of the intervention is being studied to assess feasibility of transferring the intervention to a programmatically funded facet of patient care.

REFIT Hearing: Remote Fitting of Hearing Aids - REFITHEARING

REFIT Hearing: Remote Fitting of Hearing Aids

Currently, the fitting of hearing aids is using a computer interface that allows to adjust the gain and compression of acoustic amplification. This adjustment is made face to face, patient and audiologist being located in a soundproof space to test the effectiveness of the hearing aid. However, advances in telemedicine in this context, let consider the possibility of addressing these hearing aids fitting via the same computer interface, but remotely controlled by the hearing care professional. The purpose of this study is to assess the ability to perform these tests no longer in front of the patient settings, but away from it, and without visual and sound contact other than through a computer interface. At the end, this project wants to show that a remote fitting is an acceptable procedure that provides comparable results to-face fitting in terms of speech perception, speech in noise audiometry, hearing loss related quality of life in order to be able to offer this type of strategy.

Impact of Anticipated Regret Incorporation Into Patient Decision Aids

Impact of Anticipated Regret on Decision-Making in Preference Sensitive Care for Breast and Prostate Cancer

The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of incorporating "anticipated regret " into standard patient decision aids. Participants in the Wharton Behavioral Lab will be administered a standard patient decision aid and an "anticipated regret" augmented decision aid. Participants will complete a computerized survey about their experiences with each version, and their answers will be assessed for potential differences associated with the incorporation of "Anticipated Regret."
